PONS Token Surges Amidst Robinhood Chain Meme Coin Frenzy
The cryptocurrency world is abuzz with PONS, the native token of the Pons app on the rapidly growing Robinhood Chain network. It has emerged as the top performer on the chain by a significant margin.
PONS powers Pons, which is described as Robinhood Chain’s premier meme coin factory. This launchpad allows anyone to create a cryptocurrency, often based on internet jokes or trends rather than a tangible product, drawing parallels to the popular Pump.fun app on the Solana network.
As of September 3, the Robinhood Chain token was trading at $0.5978 on its Uniswap pool, boasting a market capitalization exceeding $430 million. This represents a 24-hour increase of 31.82%. For early investors, a $1,000 investment made on July 17, when PONS hit a low of approximately $0.0033, would now be worth around $181,000.
How Pons Operates
Pons functions as a streamlined cryptocurrency creation platform. Users can select a name, ticker, and image, and the platform instantly deploys a token with a fixed supply of 1 billion into a trading pool. This process requires no coding, no team allocation, and no waiting period. Pons does not handle user funds directly; all launches and trades are executed through the creator’s own wallet.
The platform operates exclusively on Robinhood Chain, a new blockchain network launched by the trading app company Robinhood on July 1. As a layer-2 solution, it processes transactions on its own efficient network before settling them on Ethereum. While Robinhood Chain was initially intended for tokenized stocks and DeFi applications, meme coins have become its primary driver of early activity.
PONS’s Rise and Competition
Pons occupies a similar niche on Robinhood Chain as Pump.fun does on Solana, serving as a primary destination for traders looking to launch and speculate on new tokens. Pons went live shortly after Robinhood Chain’s mainnet and absorbed most of the activity following the abrupt cessation of new launches by an early competitor, Noxa, on July 11.
PONS began trading in mid-July at a fraction of a cent. After reaching its lowest point two days later, it rallied to $0.066 by July 27, as Pons solidified its position as the chain’s busiest launchpad.
However, this initial surge faced challenges. In early August, Uniswap, the default exchange for Robinhood Chain, introduced its own zero-fee launchpad, Pools.trade, which quickly captured half of the launchpad volume. This competitive pressure caused PONS to drop to approximately $0.016.
Tokenomics Drive Recovery
The subsequent recovery of PONS was attributed to its tokenomics rather than solely hype surrounding Robinhood Chain. Approximately 80% of Pons’s revenue is directed towards an automatic buyback-and-burn mechanism. The platform utilizes trading fees to repurchase PONS on the open market and permanently remove it from circulation, thereby reducing the supply. Roughly 29% of the initial 1 billion tokens, totaling about 288 million, have been burned, leaving an effective supply close to 712 million.
PONS experienced another significant rally in the latter half of August, climbing from around $0.03 to a new high of nearly $0.49 by the beginning of September.
During this period, PONS surpassed CashCat, the chain’s flagship meme coin, to become Robinhood Chain’s largest token by market capitalization. CashCat is named after a discarded brand considered by Robinhood founders Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt.
Vlad Tenev has acknowledged the burgeoning ecosystem, mentioning in an interview that on Robinhood Chain, “if you hold a meme coin, you just get stock tokens airdropped to you.”
Exchange Listings and Trading Volume
Binance Wallet added PONS to its Alpha trading tier on September 2, propelling the token to new highs the following day.
Pons the platform reported $5.95 million in daily fees on September 3, a figure that ranked it fourth among all crypto protocols tracked by DefiLlama and briefly allowed it to out-earn Robinhood Chain itself on that day.
PONS is currently available on Uniswap pools on Robinhood Chain, as well as centralized exchanges including MEXC, Gate.io, KuCoin, and Binance Alpha. Futures trading is also offered on Hyperliquid, Bybit, and Aster. Market cap estimates vary across trackers, ranging from $392 million on DefiLlama to $576 million on OpenSea, highlighting the token’s still-developing and fast-paced on-chain liquidity.
