Ravencoin Plummets 20% Amid Exploit Threatening Network Rollback

Blockchain Vulnerability Threatens to Erase Days of Ravencoin Transactions

The developer behind the Ravencoin cryptocurrency network announced Tuesday that the blockchain may have to roll back several days of transactions due to attackers exploiting a flaw in the software that secures the network. The native token, RVN, has seen its value plummet by 20%, erasing tens of millions of dollars in market capitalization over the past several hours.

The project disclosed the bug in a network notice posted to X, warning that deposits, withdrawals, and payments made since Friday are at risk of reversal.

The vulnerability emerged on August 7th. Ravencoin, which operates on a proof-of-work consensus mechanism similar to Bitcoin’s and was forked from Bitcoin in 2018 to facilitate token issuance, relies on the chain with the most computing power to be recognized as the legitimate record.

However, the flaw disrupted this fundamental rule. “The issue caused invalid blocks to be accepted by vulnerable nodes,” the notice stated. “The first known invalid block appeared at height 4,487,776 on 2026-08-07 15:44:01 UTC.”

Hash Power Concentration Fuels Reorganization Concerns

Hash power, the collective computing power miners dedicate to securing the blockchain, determines which version of the ledger is considered valid. On Ravencoin, this power is notably concentrated. “2Miners and RavenMiner currently control a majority of the network hash rate and have announced that they are mining a chain which excludes the exploited branch from height 4,487,776 onward,” the notice explained.

If a sufficient number of miners align with this decision, the new chain will become the official one. “If that chain becomes the dominant chain, this may result in a deep chain reorganization of approximately three days,” the post warned.

The developer who issued the notice attempted to mitigate the impact by requesting a more recent recovery point from mining pools, but this request was reportedly declined.

Exchanges Advised to Suspend Trading Amidst Uncertainty

In response to the developing situation, exchanges were advised to take immediate action. “My recommendation to exchanges is clear: temporarily suspend RVN deposits and withdrawals until the network situation is resolved and the chain state is stable.” South Korea’s Upbit and the Netherlands’ Bitvavo have already implemented such measures, freezing RVN transactions.

The proposed technical solution to rectify the issue involves reverting the blockchain to block 4,487,775, designating it as the last valid block, and resuming operations from that point.

For individuals who conducted transactions after the flaw was exploited, the warning is stark. “Transactions confirmed after block 4,487,775 should be treated as at risk. Some affected transactions may return to the mempool and be mined again, but this is not guaranteed.” The notice further cautioned that “exchanges should not assume that reversed deposits or withdrawals will automatically reappear or be confirmed again.”

Precedent of Blockchain Reorganizations

This incident is not the first time a blockchain’s immutability has been challenged. In 2022, Ethereum’s beacon chain experienced its longest reorganization in years, and proof-of-work chains like Ethereum Classic have been subjected to repeated 51% attacks, allowing attackers to rewrite transaction history. Ravencoin saw a surge in Ethereum miners following Ethereum’s 2022 merge to proof-of-stake, which boosted its hash rate but also contributed to the current concentration of mining power.

The market reacted swiftly to the news, with the Ravencoin/USDT daily chart showing a significant decline. The token experienced a 20.40% loss on the day, wiping out months of trading within the roughly $0.0038 to $0.0045 range it had occupied since mid-June. The token’s market capitalization has fallen to $46 million, a decrease of tens of millions in value in a matter of hours. From its late-May peak near $0.0055, RVN has lost nearly half its value.
