Markets Rebound Fizzles, XRP Suffers Steep Decline
The optimistic gains seen across markets on Wednesday afternoon evaporated within 24 hours, with the cryptocurrency sector experiencing a significant downturn. Ripple’s cross-border token, XRP, has been particularly hard-hit, plummeting to its lowest price in over two months.
Just 36 hours prior, XRP, mirroring the broader market’s surge, had climbed to $1.35. This ascent followed predictions from prominent analyst Ali Martinez, who suggested that a close above the $1.28 resistance level could trigger substantial price appreciation. However, the asset faced strong rejection at that point, leading to a subsequent and severe price correction.
XRP first lost its footing at the $1.30 support level and subsequently fell below $1.20. The token then plunged below $1.185, marking its lowest point since the August 22nd downturn. The primary driver behind this sharp decline appears to be a widespread market collapse. Bitcoin, for instance, was rejected at the $81,000 mark and fell to $75,000, with most altcoins following suit.
Despite the general market weakness, XRP’s performance is notably poor. It stands as the worst performer among the top 30 altcoins, with a 9.5% drop in the past 24 hours. Its market capitalization has shrunk to $75 billion, widening the gap with BNB, which holds $90 billion, even after a recent major hack targeting Binance.
One factor that may have contributed to XRP’s steep fall, or at least hindered a sustained recovery, is the lack of activity in Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). While these funds saw gains in October, demand has been minimal to non-existent at the start of November. Data from SoSoValue indicates a minor dip on Monday, with no significant trading activity observed on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
As previously noted, Martinez had anticipated a significant upward move for XRP when it was trading around $1.25. His subsequent analysis on X remained bullish, highlighting the withdrawal of over 13 million tokens from exchanges, which theoretically reduces immediate selling pressure. Furthermore, he pointed out that whale holdings had increased by 60 million coins within a week, suggesting growing interest from large investors.
Martinez also emphasized technical indicators, noting that XRP appeared to be forming the “right shoulder of a potential inverse head-and-shoulders bottom.” He projected a target of $1.60, with a break above this level potentially paving the way for a move towards $2.10.
The subsequent rejection at higher levels suggests that the surge to $1.35 may have been a false breakout, despite the bullish underlying data. This episode underscores the inherent unpredictability of volatile market movements, even for seasoned analysts, and serves as a reminder for investors to conduct their own due diligence before committing capital, particularly during periods of heightened uncertainty.
