XRP’s weekly Super Trend indicator recently flipped bullish on August 17, a development that has historically preceded significant pullbacks in the cryptocurrency’s price action. This signal, according to analyst ChartNerd, has marked local tops in every previous cycle going back to 2019. Currently, XRP is consolidating, trading between its 20-week Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and its 50-week EMA, indicating a period of indecision.
Historical Precedent and Current Consolidation
The recent bullish Super Trend flip occurred after XRP rallied approximately 70% from a low of $0.98 to a high of $1.70. However, ChartNerd points out that XRP is now stalling at a resistance level, a pattern observed in previous cycles where similar bullish signals coincided with corrections. The token is currently trading between the 20-week EMA, which is around $1.29 to $1.30, and the 50-week EMA, near $1.52. “Whilst beneath the 50 and above the 20, we’re simply compressing,” ChartNerd stated, describing the recent price action as a period of chop as traders await clearer direction.
Historical data provides a cautionary tale. In 2022, XRP experienced a roughly 90% rally from its cycle low, followed by a bullish Super Trend flip around the 50-week EMA, which then preceded a 45% correction. Similarly, in 2019, a bullish flip during a bear market was followed by a 56% correction. After the 2020 cycle low, XRP also saw a bullish flip before a 32% decline. ChartNerd argues that while this pattern has appeared frequently, historical behavior does not guarantee the same outcome this time.
Analyst Perspective and Market Context
The analyst also identified a significant structural change level around $1.90, suggesting that XRP would need to clear the zone between $1.50 and $1.90 for a move towards its previous all-time high to appear more convincing. While a short-term push above $1.52 is possible, ChartNerd noted that even a close above the 50-week EMA would not automatically negate the historical warning.
In recent trading, XRP dipped toward $1.39 during a period of Bitcoin’s slide before buyers stepped in to push it to $1.44. At the time of writing, XRP was trading near $1.38, down close to 4% in the last 24 hours. Over the past week, XRP has seen a modest increase of 1.5%, but it remains down more than 53% from a year ago and approximately 62% below its all-time high of $3.65, which was set in July 2025. Bitcoin has been trading sideways between $77,600 and $80,000 in recent days, and XRP’s price movements have largely mirrored Bitcoin’s fluctuations.
Trading activity in XRP has shown increased interest, with futures volume across major exchanges topping $64 billion in August, marking the busiest month in half a year. Spot XRP ETFs also continued to see inflows, though at a slower pace, with just under $19 million in weekly inflows last week, following over $110 million the week before. This week, net inflows for Spot XRP ETFs have reached approximately $13.83 million.
The current situation presents a divergence between a bullish technical signal and historical data suggesting caution. While the Super Trend indicator has turned positive, the repeated pattern of pullbacks following such signals, combined with XRP consolidating at resistance levels, introduces significant uncertainty regarding its immediate future price direction. Further price action will be needed to determine if historical patterns will repeat or if new market dynamics will prevail.
Why This Matters
The materials describe a narrow update: XRP’s weekly Super Trend indicator turned bullish, but historical analysis suggests this signal has preceded pullbacks in previous cycles. Whether the current bullish Super Trend signal will lead to a pullback similar to previous cycles.
