Crypto Trading Volume Sees Significant Rebound in August
Robinhood’s notional cryptocurrency trading volume surged 61% in August to $17.5 billion, according to operating data released by the company on Thursday. This marks a substantial rebound from July, when the platform processed $10.9 billion in crypto trades. Despite the significant month-over-month increase, August’s total volume remained 38% below the $28.1 billion recorded in the same month last year.
Platform Performance and Growth
The Robinhood app itself accounted for $7.4 billion of the August crypto volume, a 72% increase from July but a 46% decrease compared to the previous year. Bitstamp, an exchange acquired by Robinhood in 2025, contributed the larger portion with $10.1 billion, up 53% from July. Combined, the two platforms facilitated an average of $565 million in daily crypto trading.
While crypto represents a smaller segment of Robinhood’s overall business, the company reported total platform assets of $384 billion, a 26% year-over-year increase. The number of funded customers, defined as users who have completed at least one transaction in the past 45 days, grew to 28.6 million. Margin loans, which Robinhood extends to customers for trading with borrowed funds, climbed to $21.5 billion, a 72% increase from the previous year.
Event Contracts Emerge as a Breakout Business
A notable area of growth for Robinhood is its event contracts, a prediction market where users can bet on outcomes such as Federal Reserve decisions or sporting events. In August, 4.7 billion event contracts were traded, a 23% decrease from July but a remarkable 15-fold increase from the 300 million contracts traded in August 2025.
These contracts operate as simple yes-or-no wagers, with a payout of $1 if the prediction is correct and nothing if it is wrong. This burgeoning market has positioned prediction markets as Robinhood’s breakout business. The company’s second-quarter earnings report in July revealed a tenfold year-over-year surge in event contract revenue to $156 million, surpassing crypto as a source of transaction income. Robinhood facilitates these trades through partner exchanges Kalshi and ForecastEx, as well as its joint venture Rothera, which had processed over 3.5 billion contracts since its June launch.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Blockchain Expansion
The rapid growth of prediction markets has drawn attention on Capitol Hill, with lawmakers introducing over 10 bills since January targeting the sector. The PREDICT Act, for example, aims to prohibit members of Congress, the president, and other senior officials from trading contracts tied to political events. Critics argue that the integration of sports and political wagers alongside retirement accounts blurs the lines between investing and gambling, a tension that regulators are actively addressing.
Concurrently, Robinhood’s blockchain initiative, Robinhood Chain, is also experiencing rapid expansion. This Ethereum layer 2 network, designed for faster and cheaper transactions before settling on the main Ethereum network, recorded $1.6 billion in daily trading volume on decentralized exchanges as of September 1, a 61% increase in just four days.
Market Reaction and Future Outlook
Despite these positive operational developments, Robinhood shares (HOOD) saw a slight decline of 0.83% following the release of the data. This occurred even as analysts from Mizuho and StoneX raised their price targets this week, citing the company’s broader growth trajectory. Robinhood’s next quarterly earnings report is anticipated on November 4.
