Stablecoin Payment Volume Surges 45% Amidst Stagnant Supply, Signaling Increased Utility and Market Fragmentation

Stablecoin payment volume surged 45% to $482 billion from January through September 2026, while total supply increased by a mere 0.4% to $305 billion. This divergence, detailed in Allium’s latest report, highlights a significant increase in stablecoin utility for payments and suggests a growing fragmentation within the market.

The period saw a 71% jump in transaction counts to 1.04 billion, with the average payment size decreasing from $544 to $462. September 2026 alone set a monthly record, processing $72 billion in stablecoin payments.

Traditional financial players are increasingly integrating stablecoins. Visa reported a nearly 200% year-over-year increase in payment volume on its stablecoin-linked card programs, now exceeding a $20 billion annualized run rate, with over 160 programs launched globally. Mastercard’s acquisition of BVNK contributed to a tenfold increase in card spending funded by stablecoins, reaching $3.9 billion in Q3 2026.

This substantial growth in payment volume, against a backdrop of near-stagnant supply, underscores the expanding use of stablecoins for transactional purposes. Businesses are leveraging them for transactions, payroll, and cross-border payments, according to the report.

However, the stablecoin market is exhibiting signs of fragmentation. Major issuers like Tether, Circle, and Ethena saw their supply contract in 2026. Conversely, smaller issuers collectively added $6.9 billion in supply, indicating a potential shift in market dynamics and the emergence of diverse providers catering to specific needs.

Emerging technologies are also influencing stablecoin adoption. Payments facilitated by AI agents doubled to 68.3 million transactions in Q3 2026, marking their growing significance as users of stablecoin payment systems. The combination of a decreasing average payment size and the rise in AI agent transactions points to evolving patterns of stablecoin utilization.

While these trends indicate a strong push towards stablecoin utility for payments, uncertainties persist. It remains to be seen if the decrease in average payment size will continue, if AI agent transaction growth will maintain its pace, or if smaller issuers can sustain their gains against larger competitors. The split between supply and usage is emerging as a key signal for the crypto market.
