Sophon is shutting down its Ethereum layer-2 blockchain and migrating its operations to the Base network, citing that the costs of maintenance no longer outweigh the benefits. The platform will refocus on consumer finance and AI applications.
Users are asked to withdraw their assets, including Sophon (SOPH), Ether (ETH), and USDC (USDC), before the mainnet shutdown on November 25th. Assets left on the Sophon Chain risk becoming permanently inaccessible after this deadline.
Sophon developers initially stated in June that the costs of maintaining a standalone blockchain had become prohibitive. This strategic shift to leverage existing infrastructure on Base aims to streamline operations and concentrate resources on developing consumer-facing applications and artificial intelligence initiatives.
The move by Sophon follows a similar announcement from Abstract, another Ethereum layer-2 network focused on consumer applications. Abstract, developed by Igloo, the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, is set to close on December 15th. Igloo reportedly incurred losses in the tens of millions of dollars supporting the Abstract network, highlighting the financial challenges of maintaining independent layer-2 solutions.
Sophon has a history of significant investment, having raised $60 million through a node sale in 2024 and previously securing a separate $10 million funding round. Despite this financial backing, the operational costs of its dedicated L2 proved unsustainable.
The migration of Sophon to Base signifies a potential trend towards consolidation within the layer-2 ecosystem. The increasing costs and complexities of managing independent blockchains may be prompting projects to seek more established or cost-effective platforms. This move by Sophon could indicate a broader re-evaluation of the viability of standalone L2s, particularly those focused on consumer applications, in favor of integrating with larger, more robust networks.
Sophon’s developers have not yet detailed the specific AI and consumer finance applications they plan to focus on within the Base network. The exact amount of assets remaining on the Sophon Chain at the time of shutdown is also uncertain.
Why This Matters
Sophon’s decision to shut down its Ethereum layer-2 blockchain and migrate to Base highlights a broader trend of consolidation within the layer-2 ecosystem. The financial challenges of maintaining standalone blockchains, as evidenced by Igloo’s losses supporting Abstract, suggest that cost-efficiency and leveraging established infrastructure are becoming critical for the sustainability of such networks. This strategic pivot by Sophon underscores the evolving economic landscape for layer-2 solutions.
Broader Context
Sophon launched as a zero-knowledge-powered layer-2 network focused on consumer applications, including gaming, entertainment and AI. The shutdown follows a similar announcement from Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Pudgy Penguins’ parent company, Igloo, which is set to close on December 15th. Igloo lost tens of millions of dollars supporting Abstract, indicating the financial pressures faced by independent layer-2 networks.
