Blockchain.com Rolls Out Options Trading for Major Cryptos

Blockchain.com Introduces Options Trading for Digital Assets

Blockchain.com has expanded its offerings by launching options trading, allowing eligible users to purchase call or put contracts on a select group of major digital assets. These contracts have a maximum expiration period of one week.

The new feature, which became available on October 20, 2026, settles all trades in USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar. This move marks another significant development in the company’s growing focus on derivatives products throughout the year.

Simplified Options Trading

The options trading functionality is integrated within Blockchain.com’s Trading Account. Users can opt to buy call contracts if they anticipate a price increase for an asset, or put contracts if they expect the price to decline.

The cost of these contracts is known as the premium, which also serves as the maximum potential loss for a trader on Blockchain.com. The amount paid to open a position represents the ceiling on any potential losses.

A key condition for users is the requirement to hold contracts until their settlement date. Early exit from trades that turn unfavorable is not permitted, meaning the defined risk is coupled with a commitment to see the contract through to its conclusion.

At its launch, seven digital assets are eligible for options trading.

The minimum premium for each order is set at $5, in addition to applicable fees.

All trades are denominated and funded in USDC. This means users do not need to possess the underlying digital asset to speculate on its price movements.

The decision to cap contract expirations at one week is a deliberate design choice. This approach aims to keep contracts focused on short-term price action rather than long-term speculative bets.

When combined with the buy-only structure and the hold-to-settlement rule, the setup is designed for maximum simplicity. Users are not involved in writing contracts or assuming open-ended liabilities. They pay a fixed sum and will know within a week whether their investment has yielded a return.

Strategic Expansion into Derivatives

The introduction of options trading follows a series of strategic moves by Blockchain.com in the derivatives space. Earlier in 2026, the company introduced perpetual futures trading, offering users leveraged exposure to digital assets without expiration dates.

Furthermore, Blockchain.com has been actively engaging with regulatory bodies. On October 13, 2026, just one week prior to the options launch, the company submitted applications to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for two key registrations.

The first application is for a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) license. This designation is crucial for firms that handle customer orders and funds for futures and related contracts.

The second application seeks Designated Contract Market (DCM) registration. This status would enable Blockchain.com to operate a regulated exchange for derivatives.

The stated objective behind these filings is to introduce regulated derivatives and prediction markets within the United States. While the applications have been submitted, they are still pending approval, indicating that the U.S. market expansion remains a work in progress.

Considerations and Future Outlook

The simplicity of the new options product comes with inherent trade-offs. Short-dated options can quickly expire worthless, a common occurrence. Traders who consistently purchase weekly call options and fail to predict price movements accurately may lose their entire premium on each trade, even if individual losses are modest. Therefore, while risk is capped per trade, overall risk exposure can still accumulate.

The selection of eligible assets also provides insight into Blockchain.com’s perception of market demand. In addition to prominent cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, the list includes Hyperliquid’s HYPE token, which is associated with a competing derivatives platform.

The chronological sequence of Blockchain.com’s recent activities is noteworthy: perpetual futures trading earlier this year, CFTC filings on October 13, and the launch of options trading on October 20.

The CFTC applications are a critical development to monitor. Securing FCM and DCM status would provide Blockchain.com with a regulated framework to offer derivatives and prediction markets to U.S. customers. Until such approvals are granted, the current options product will remain accessible only to users deemed eligible by the company.
