Monero Jumps 20% Weekly: Will Zcash Surge Repeat?

Monero Extends Impressive Rally Amidst Broader Market Downturn

The privacy coin Monero (XMR) has defied the broader cryptocurrency market’s downward trend today, extending its remarkable rally. Currently trading just shy of $650, XMR has seen a 20% increase over the past week, reaching its highest point since January.

Analysts are expressing optimism that the upward momentum is far from over, with some predicting a new all-time high for the asset in the near future.

Software Update Fuels Monero’s Surge

The recent surge in XMR’s price appears to have been significantly influenced by an announcement from the Monero team. They revealed on X (formerly Twitter) the release of GUI v0.18.5.4, codenamed ‘Fluorine Fermi.’ This minor upgrade, as detailed by the team, includes the reopening of testnet and stagenet wallets, alongside various bug fixes.

“This release was the direct result of 2 people who worked to put out 8 commits containing 38 new lines of code. We’d like to thank them very much for their time and effort. In no particular order, they are: selsta and tobtoht,” the team stated.

Analysts Bullish on XMR’s Future

Market observers are widely anticipating further gains for Monero. One prominent X user, Sweep, has predicted that XMR will not only reach a new historical peak but could potentially climb to $1,000 in the coming months. Sweep lauded the asset’s current chart as “the best-looking chart right now” and drew parallels to Zcash’s (ZEC) significant rally earlier this year, suggesting XMR could replicate that success.

Alaoui Capital has also issued a bullish forecast, identifying a potential multi-year cup-and-handle formation on Monero’s chart. The firm believes this pattern could signal an impending ascent towards the $1,000 mark.

Crypto With Gopal, another analyst, argued that Monero is breaking out of a rectangular pattern. He noted that bulls have pushed past the $630-$640 resistance zone after weeks of consolidation between $520 support and resistance. “Momentum is heating up as buyers attempt to take control! A confirmed breakout could open the door toward $750. Watch for a successful retest to confirm strength. Bullish momentum is surging – breakout watch is ON,” he concluded.

Potential Headwinds Emerge

Despite the prevailing optimism for a continued rally, certain on-chain metrics suggest a potential cool-off may be on the horizon. CoinGlass data indicates that Monero’s exchange netflow has seen inflows surpass outflows in recent days. This trend suggests a shift of assets from self-custody to centralized exchanges, potentially increasing immediate selling pressure.

Furthermore, Monero’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) has climbed to nearly 70, a level that typically signals an asset is approaching overbought territory and could be a precursor to a price correction.

Adding to these cautionary signals, Dr Profit recently highlighted that XMR’s open interest has reached a historic high. He pointed out that a similar surge in open interest in the past preceded a significant price crash of 66% within just 20 days. However, analytics platform Santiment has contested this claim, stating that Monero’s open interest closed October 20 at approximately $198 million, representing the fifth-highest daily close observed over the past year.
