Bitcoin ETFs See $635M Outflow, BlackRock Leads Losses

Bitcoin ETFs See Significant Outflow After Days of Inflows

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds experienced outflows totaling $635 million on October 22, according to data from SoSoValue reported by Odaily. This marks a sharp reversal for the product category, which had seen substantial cash inflows in the preceding days.

BlackRock Leads the Outflow

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), the largest fund in the space, was the primary driver of the outflows, with investors withdrawing $254 million from the fund in a single trading session.

Context of the Outflow

The timing of this significant outflow is particularly noteworthy. In the three days leading up to October 22, these Bitcoin ETFs collectively attracted over $1 billion in inflows. October 21 alone saw approximately $528 million enter the funds, with the majority coming from the two largest issuers. IBIT garnered $235 million that day, while Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) added $212.7 million.

The subsequent day’s activity saw IBIT’s $254 million outflow exceed its previous day’s intake, effectively reversing a full day’s gains and an additional $19 million. With IBIT accounting for $254 million of the total $635 million outflow, other issuers collectively saw redemptions of approximately $381 million.

October’s Volatility and Broader Trends

October has been a volatile month for Bitcoin ETF flows. Earlier in the month, outflows reached as high as $600 million to $900 million on certain days. Mid-October saw only a modest increase in flows before a late-week surge in demand.

Despite the significant single-day outflow, analysts emphasize that one rough day does not negate the longer-term trend. Cumulative net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs since their launch in January 2024 have now approached $57 billion to $58 billion. Total net assets across these funds are estimated to be between $100 billion and $109 billion. Viewed against this backdrop, the $635 million outflow, while headline-grabbing, represents less than 1% of the total asset base.

Bitcoin Price Stability Amidst Flows

The price of Bitcoin remained relatively stable during this period, trading within a range of $82,000 to $85,000. Research indicates a minimal direct correlation between ETF flow figures and Bitcoin’s price movements during these fluctuations.

Key Indicators for Institutional Demand

For observers tracking institutional demand, the critical question is whether October 22 represents a turning point or a temporary dip. The buying activity earlier in October was interpreted as a sign of resilient institutional appetite amidst ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties.

The fact that Bitcoin’s price held its ground within the $82,000 to $85,000 band despite the $635 million in redemptions suggests that other market participants absorbed the selling pressure. Investors will be closely watching whether cumulative inflows continue to climb toward and beyond the $57 billion to $58 billion mark, and whether total net assets remain within or exceed the $100 billion to $109 billion range.

When the two largest issuers, like IBIT and FBTC, move in the same direction, as they did with inflows on October 21, it typically provides a clearer indication of broad institutional sentiment compared to more scattered movements among smaller funds.
