TradFi Embraces Crypto Derivatives: Glassnode & Fasanara Report

Digital Asset Report Highlights Growing Use of Crypto Derivatives by Traditional Finance

New analysis from Glassnode and Fasanara Digital indicates a significant shift in the digital asset market structure, with traditional financial players increasingly adopting cryptocurrency derivatives. The Q4 2026 Digital Asset Report, released as the final quarter of the year commences, points to a surge in perpetual contracts linked to traditional assets like stocks, gold, and oil on major trading platforms.

The comprehensive report, which examines liquidity, derivatives, tokenized assets, and institutional flows, is primarily aimed at capital allocators – those responsible for directing substantial investment funds.

Perpetual Futures Gain Traction Beyond Crypto

A key finding of the report centers on the derivatives market. Perpetual futures, often referred to as “perps,” are a crypto-native innovation that function similarly to standard futures contracts but without a fixed expiration date. Instead of a settlement date, these contracts utilize periodic funding payments exchanged between long and short positions to maintain the contract price in close proximity to the underlying asset. The report notes a growing trend of trading venues listing perpetual contracts for equities, gold, and oil, signaling an expansion of this product beyond its cryptocurrency origins.

Glassnode, an on-chain analytics firm, derives its insights by analyzing data directly from public blockchains to track coin movements, ownership, and holding periods. Fasanara Digital, established in 2018, was an early institutional market-neutral fund focused on digital assets and has been recognized as Market Neutral Fund of the Year. Market-neutral strategies aim to generate returns irrespective of market direction, with Fasanara employing a quantitative approach designed to minimize correlation with broader market fluctuations.

This marks a continued collaboration between Fasanara and Glassnode. Previous joint reports have documented over $732 billion in new capital entering the Bitcoin market during earlier cycles. Their prior research also highlighted the growth of real-world asset tokenization, which increased from $7 billion to $24 billion year-over-year.

Derivatives Trend Seen as Structural, Not Speculative

The release of the report coincides with a period of recovery for Bitcoin. A separate Q4 2026 report from Glassnode, produced in conjunction with Coinbase Institutional, analyzed this rebound, noting that Bitcoin traded near $82,000 in mid-October 2026.

The research frames the increasing use of derivatives as a structural development rather than a purely speculative one. The argument suggests that institutional investors are integrating these instruments into their established investment strategies, moving beyond short-term trading.

Increased Competition for Exchanges

This evolving landscape presents new competitive challenges for trading venues. Platforms offering perpetual contracts on stocks, gold, and oil are now vying not only with each other but also with traditional futures exchanges and brokerages for the same pool of traders.

The concept of tokenization serves as a unifying theme. The growth of real-world asset tokenization, from $7 billion to $24 billion year-over-year according to earlier Fasanara-Glassnode data, is extended by perpetuals on stocks and commodities, shifting the focus from asset ownership to trading.

Inherent Risks of Leveraged Instruments

However, the report also flags potential risks. Perpetual contracts are leveraged instruments, and leverage can magnify both profits and losses, particularly during periods of significant market volatility. The integration of traditional assets onto these platforms means that traders of these assets will also be exposed to the 24/7 trading environment and high-leverage dynamics characteristic of the cryptocurrency market.
