Binance and Polymarket have jointly proposed a hard fork of the Polygon network to recover approximately 70.49 million POL tokens, valued at around $6.8 million, which were lost in separate security incidents. According to a Wednesday governance proposal, the hard fork would remove the stolen tokens from attacker-controlled addresses and transfer them to designated recovery wallets without altering the total supply of POL.
Polygon block producers have already frozen transactions from the affected addresses as a temporary measure. However, these restrictions do not return the funds to their owners. The proposed hard fork aims to facilitate this recovery by moving the stolen assets to verified wallets.
The incidents include a Binance hack on October 29, resulting in the theft of 46.63 million POL tokens (worth approximately $4.51 million), and a Polymarket hack where 23.86 million POL tokens (valued at $2.31 million) were stolen across four addresses. Polymarket had temporarily suspended trading following a compromise of a third-party provider.
The proposed recovery process would occur at a predetermined block on the Polygon network. This plan requires governance approval and will be tested on Polygon’s Amoy testnet before any potential mainnet implementation. A discussion regarding the proposal is scheduled for November 5, but there is no reported date for the mainnet hard fork.
Why This Matters
This proposed hard fork represents a significant intervention to address substantial losses of POL tokens resulting from security breaches. The plan, if approved and successfully implemented, aims to recover millions of dollars worth of stolen cryptocurrency, highlighting the ongoing challenges and evolving solutions within the digital asset space to mitigate the impact of hacks and secure user funds. The temporary freezing of tokens by Polygon block producers underscores the immediate need for a more permanent solution.
Broader Context
Binance, a major cryptocurrency exchange, was recently associated with a significant security incident on October 29, reportedly involving a $6.3 billion hack, though the specific details of the POL token recovery are part of a separate governance proposal. Polymarket, a decentralized prediction market, also experienced a security incident affecting its operations. These events underscore the persistent security risks within the cryptocurrency ecosystem and the complex technical and governance mechanisms required to address them.
