Bitcoin ETF Outflows Signal Accumulation, Santiment Finds

Bitcoin ETF Outflows Seen as Potential Buying Opportunity

Six consecutive days of outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, totaling $1.26 billion, are prompting analysts to look beyond the immediate losses and consider historical patterns. Blockchain analytics firm Santiment suggests these outflows may signal a buying opportunity rather than a cause for concern.

Data-Driven Analysis

Santiment argues that ETF flows often reflect retail investor behavior more than institutional strategies. Historically, sustained outflows have coincided with market bottoms, while significant inflows have occurred near price peaks.

The firm cites specific examples to support this claim. On July 10, 2023, spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $1.18 billion in inflows, coinciding with a local price top. Similarly, inflows of $1.21 billion on October 6, 2023, were followed by a price peak. Conversely, an outflow of $903 million on November 20, 2023, proved to be a well-timed entry point for buyers.

Based on this historical data, Santiment believes the current outflow trend aligns with this pattern. Retail investors appear to be reducing their exposure after Bitcoin failed to maintain the $80,000 level in May, reaching a high of $79,050 on May 16 before retreating.

Retail Sentiment and Market Outlook

Bitcoin was trading at $75,400 when Santiment published its report on Friday, May 22. The firm noted that market fear was at its highest level in over three and a half months. Santiment views this as a familiar setup, with retail investors capitulating, which has historically preceded market recoveries.

According to Farside Investors data, spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced outflows across all six trading sessions from May 15 to May 22. The 11 funds tracked collectively recorded $1.26 billion in net outflows during just five of those sessions. On May 22 alone, net outflows totaled $105 million, according to SoSoValue data, extending the outflow streak to six consecutive days.

Positive Outlook from ETF Analyst

ETF analyst James Seyffart offered an additional reason for optimism. Speaking on a podcast, Seyffart pointed out that total Bitcoin ETF inflows are approaching their all-time high of $60 billion and that most of the $9 billion in outflows recorded between October and February has since been recovered. He anticipates a new all-time inflow record in the near future.
