Bitcoin and Ethereum Options Expire Amid Market Uncertainty, Limited Impact Expected

Approximately $1.4 billion in Bitcoin options and $237 million in Ethereum options are set to expire on Friday, July 10. This event, totaling around $1.6 billion across both cryptocurrencies, occurs as the broader crypto market navigates uncertainty, with total capitalization reaching $2.25 trillion on Friday morning.

While options expiries can influence market dynamics, the current sentiment suggests a limited impact on spot markets. This is partly due to the scale of this particular expiry, which is noted as smaller than usual for Bitcoin options. The market’s focus remains on broader economic factors, including recent Federal Reserve meetings and geopolitical events, which have contributed to significant outflows from the crypto space in recent days.

Bitcoin Options Expiry Details

For Bitcoin, approximately 23,400 options contracts are expiring. The notional value stands at roughly $1.4 billion, with a put/call ratio of 0.97. The “max pain” point for these options is around $62,000, a level slightly below current spot prices, suggesting that some contracts may expire out-of-the-money. Open interest (OI) for Bitcoin options on Deribit shows $1.1 billion at the $80,000 strike price, while short sellers hold $1 billion in OI at the $60,000 strike price. The total Bitcoin options OI across all exchanges is approximately $28.7 billion.

Analysis of the Bitcoin options market indicates a persistent downside bias, though risk pricing is now more evenly distributed across maturities compared to earlier in June, according to derivatives provider Greeks Live. This suggests a less fragmented options market, but overall, it reflects ongoing concern about potential price declines, albeit with less concentrated fear than before.

Bitcoin itself saw marginal gains on Friday morning, tapping an intraday high of $64,000 during Asian trading. There is heavy resistance just above $64,500, so it needs to break this to push to the next resistance zone around $66,000.

Ethereum Options Expiry Details

In the Ethereum market, approximately 141,000 contracts are expiring, with a notional value of $237 million. The put/call ratio for Ethereum options is 1.2, and the max pain point is identified at $1,700. Total Ethereum options OI across all exchanges is around $4.4 billion.

Ether prices made marginal gains on Friday morning but remain below their resistance point at $1,800.

Broader Market Context

The broader crypto market, while ticking up slightly on Friday, is down on the week. Altcoins, including Zcash, Stellar, and Canton, are showing small gains after a period of decline.

It is crucial to distinguish between market signals and predictions. Options expiry data, including metrics like max pain and put/call ratios, provides insights into market sentiment and positioning. However, these are not guarantees of future price movements. The current data suggests that while there is a downside bias in Bitcoin options pricing, the distribution of risk has normalized. The market’s reaction to this expiry will unfold in the coming days, and it is essential to interpret such events with a focus on evidence rather than speculation, preserving the inherent uncertainty of market dynamics.

Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: A significant amount of Bitcoin and Ethereum options contracts are expiring, with a total notional value of approximately $1. Whether the expiring options will have any impact on spot markets.
