OpenUSD Gains Traction: Visa, BlackRock, Coinbase Lead 140+ Firm Support for New Stablecoin

OpenUSD Initiative Sparks Major Crypto Market Buzz

The cryptocurrency market is abuzz with the emergence of Open USD (OUSD), a new stablecoin initiative backed by a consortium of over 140 companies. Developed by Open Standard, the stablecoin is slated for launch later this year.

Data from Santiment indicates that the extensive participation from prominent financial and crypto firms has ignited significant discussion across the market. The initiative has attracted major industry players, positioning it as one of the most talked-about developments, alongside ongoing conversations about ANSEM whale activity and Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) licensing.

Market observers are debating key aspects such as custody, transparency, liquidity, and the potential for a new major stablecoin to challenge the dominance of USDC and USDT. Regardless of the outcome, the surge in attention signals that the market is taking this launch seriously.

This growing interest follows the official unveiling of OUSD by Open Standard, an independent entity tasked with overseeing the stablecoin. According to an official blog post, Open USD is designed to facilitate global money movement while addressing several challenges businesses encounter with existing stablecoins.

While stablecoins have become crucial for enabling faster, more cost-effective, and programmable digital payments, Open Standard notes that many businesses still grapple with high minting and redemption fees, limited access to revenue generated by reserve assets, and reliance on third-party issuers for future enhancements.

To tackle these issues, OUSD is built on three foundational principles. Firstly, businesses will be able to mint and redeem the stablecoin without incurring fees or facing volume restrictions. Secondly, participating partners will share in the earnings generated from the stablecoin’s reserves, after a nominal management fee is deducted to cover operational expenses. Thirdly, governance will be a collective effort managed through Open Standard, with its board comprising partner organizations rather than a single controlling issuer.

Open Standard asserts that this structure is intended to ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of the broader ecosystem. The organization has also confirmed that over 140 businesses have already committed to supporting or utilizing Open USD. Notable signatories include Visa, Stripe, Mastercard, American Express, Coinbase, BlackRock, BNY, Standard Chartered, Intercontinental Exchange, Bybit, Solana, Base, OKX, and Ripple.

Commenting on the development, Samara Cohen, BlackRock’s Global Head of Market Development, stated, “We believe stablecoins can play an important role in the evolution of digital markets when supported by trusted infrastructure and practical utility. Open USD is a constructive step toward giving businesses more choice in how they access tokenized value and participate in internet native digital rail.”

The announcement of OUSD also appears to have impacted investor sentiment surrounding Circle, the issuer of USDC. On Tuesday, Circle’s (CRCL) shares saw a decline of 17.55%, closing at $62.63.

Sam Ruskin, a former Enterprise Research Analyst at Messari, suggested via Twitter that the new stablecoin’s model could present a competitive challenge to USDC due to its three core design principles. He posited that OUSD’s innovative model might compel Circle to explore revenue-sharing agreements, seek new distribution partners, or concentrate on other facets of its stablecoin business.

Trump Holds Over $50 Million in Bitcoin, Federal Disclosure Reveals

Newly released federal financial disclosure documents show that former President Donald Trump holds more than $50 million worth of Bitcoin in a cold wallet.

The 927-page document, published by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, indicates that the Bitcoin is held under CIC Digital LLC as a “Cryptocurrency Wallet Virtual Bitcoin Key (held in cold wallet).” The value is reported in the highest available category, “Over $50,000,000.” The exact amount could be higher, as the disclosure form does not require precise figures beyond this threshold.

The filing specifies that the Bitcoin is held within the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, with Trump listed as the sole beneficiary. This trust also encompasses his stake in Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social.

The Bitcoin is notably stored in cold storage, meaning its private keys are kept offline. This method is commonly employed to mitigate online security risks, as opposed to storing assets on internet-connected systems or with third-party exchanges.

Bitcoin is not the only digital asset held by CIC Digital LLC, according to the filing. The company also lists an Ethereum wallet valued between $5 million and $25 million. Additionally, it holds a staked Ethereum position through a Coinbase staking agreement, which generated $510,808 in validator rewards. A USDC stablecoin holding is also reported, valued between $5 million and $25 million, along with a smaller dollar-denominated wallet.

Based on the reported valuation ranges, the combined disclosed value of Trump’s Bitcoin and Ethereum holdings alone exceeds $100 million. The disclosure also sheds light on Trump’s cryptocurrency-related earnings during the reporting period. World Liberty Financial (WLFI) reportedly generated over $500 million from the sale of governance tokens and other crypto products. CIC Digital LLC, meanwhile, earned more than $635 million from sales of Trump-branded meme coins launched shortly before his inauguration.

Cumulatively, Trump’s disclosed crypto earnings surpassed $1 billion during his first year back in office.

The disclosure has prompted significant scrutiny. In response, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that neither Trump nor his family has engaged in, nor will they engage in, conflicts of interest. She added, “All actions by President Trump and his administration are taken in the best interest of the American people – and any so-called ‘reporters’ pushing otherwise are recycling the same, tired, false narrative that Democrats and the legacy media have been pushing for a decade.”

  • Binance Stocks: Bending Spoons (BSP) Update – July 1, 2026

Binance Stocks: Bending Spoons (BSP) Update – July 1, 2026

Binance Stocks to Expand Trading Options with Whole-Share Orders

Binance is set to enhance its Binance Stocks offering by enabling users to place whole-share limit orders for BSP stocks during regular trading hours, beginning July 1, 2026, at 09:05 UTC. This move aims to broaden trading choices and improve the user experience on the platform.

IPO Trading Dynamics and Price Discovery

In anticipation of the initial public offering (IPO) of BSP stocks, Binance notes that the opening price on Nasdaq is not expected at the typical 13:30 UTC. Historical data from high-profile IPOs on Nasdaq indicates that the price discovery phase can extend for several hours. During this period, orders will be queued and will only be executed once the market officially opens for BSP trading.

The opening cross is the mechanism by which an exchange, such as Nasdaq, matches buy and sell orders to establish the initial public trading price of a security.

Limit Up Limit Down (LULD) and Trading Halts

The Limit Up Limit Down (LULD) bands will be applicable to all National Market System (NMS) stocks, including IPOs. If a stock’s price moves beyond these LULD bands, trading will be temporarily paused. Regular trading for BSP will only resume after Nasdaq lifts any trading halt. During a halt, new orders cannot be placed. Market orders that are pending will be canceled, while pending limit orders will remain active.

    Broker Restrictions and Securities Lending

Partnered brokers may implement net buy restrictions or caps. In such scenarios, new buy orders could be rejected or blocked, although risk-reducing sell orders might still be permitted, contingent on the specific controls in place.

Fully Paid Securities Lending (FPSL) for BSP will become available once the shares from trades have fully settled, which is typically on the T+1 trading day.

    Eligibility and Disclaimer

Trading of the newly introduced stock(s) is contingent upon user eligibility based on their country or region of residence.

Binance reserves the right to amend or cancel this announcement at any time and for any reason without prior notice.

Bitfinex Analysts: Bitcoin May Drop to $40,000 Before Reaching Bottom

Bitcoin May Plunge to $40,000s Before Hitting Bottom, Bitfinex Analysts Say

Bitcoin (BTC) has further to fall before reaching its trough in the current bear cycle, according to an analysis of on-chain indicators by researchers at the crypto exchange Bitfinex.

The latest Bitfinex Alpha report suggests that the leading digital asset could see further declines into the $40,000 range by the end of the year as more investors exit the spot market.

Historically, BTC has experienced declines of at least 70% from its all-time highs (ATHs) before finding a bottom and beginning to recover. During the 2022 bear market, BTC dropped 78% from its peak of $69,000, and in 2018, it plummeted 86% from cycle highs near $20,000.

Based on these historical drawdown patterns and the typical timeframes between market peaks and troughs, analysts anticipate BTC’s current decline could extend into the $40,000s. The asset is currently down 53.9% from its ATH of $126,000. A drop into the $40,000s would represent a decline of at least 68%. Furthermore, if cycle estimates incorporate price movements relative to moving averages, analysts believe BTC could reach its bear-cycle bottom in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Despite the asset’s floor giving way over the weekend, analysts maintain that BTC’s structural levels remain unchanged. At the time of reporting, with the coin trading near $60,000, it is positioned below the True Market Mean of $77,000, which represents the average cost basis for active investors. This level also acts as a dividing line between bullish and bearish market conditions, indicating that bitcoin’s price action will likely continue to be dictated by a structural bear market environment.

Last week, after breaking below the $61,500 support level and hitting a new bear cycle low of $58,136, the key support level to monitor is now $53,400. The move towards $58,000 signals weakening spot demand, evidenced by selling from short-term holders, outflows from exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the collapse of the digital asset treasury channel, and negative gamma pressure.

Notably, unlike previous downturns, bitcoin’s fall below $60,000 last week did not involve large-scale liquidations or significant fluctuations in open interest. This suggests the decline was a structural exodus from spot markets rather than a forced deleveraging event. With the market’s primary demand driver absent, bitcoin’s price is expected to remain weak and continue its downward trend in the coming weeks.

“The market awaits a resurgence of spot demand to establish a floor and potentially turn higher,” the analysts explained.

BIP-110 Critics Warn of Self-Custody Risks, Fund Exposure

Critics Warn Bitcoin Upgrade Could Render Funds Unspendable

A contentious debate surrounding Bitcoin’s proposed BIP-110 soft fork has escalated, with critics arguing that the upgrade could destabilize certain wallets and potentially render some users’ Bitcoin permanently inaccessible if implemented.

The concerns were raised by crypto investment advisor Farside Investors, who challenged assertions made by BIP-110 proponent Fred Krueger in a recent social media post. Krueger had claimed that BIP-110 would preserve Bitcoin’s core monetary properties, leaving its 21 million coin supply, proof-of-work consensus, Lightning Network functionality, multisig wallets, self-custody capabilities, and address formats unchanged.

“The primary effect is that large arbitrary data used by Ordinals, Runes, and similar protocols would no longer be valid,” Krueger stated.

Farside Investors, however, disputed this assessment. They contend that BIP-110 would effectively ban several Taproot scripting features, including the OP_IF opcode, which is utilized by Miniscript. According to Farside’s explanation, following the fork, wallets supporting Miniscript would still permit users to create and send funds to addresses constructed using these now-prohibited scripts. While such transactions would appear valid under BIP-110’s own rules, the Bitcoin sent to these addresses would become unspendable, as the necessary conditions for spending would no longer be recognized under the new consensus rules.

Ironically, the latest version of Bitcoin Knots, a node implementation that supports BIP-110, could itself generate these incompatible addresses, Farside pointed out.

Furthermore, Farside highlighted that BIP-110 would also prohibit the creation of new pay-to-public-key (P2PK) outputs. This script type was widely used in Bitcoin’s early days and currently holds over 1.7 million BTC. While spending existing P2PK outputs would remain permissible, Farside noted that under certain circumstances, the proposal could lead to temporary fund freezes or expose users to theft risks, despite incorporating safeguards like grandfathering older outputs and limiting enforcement to approximately one year.

The proposal is set to activate if 55% of miners signal their support during a difficulty adjustment period. Alternatively, if this threshold is not met, activation could occur through a mandatory signaling process commencing at block 961,632, which is anticipated in August 2026.

The dispute over BIP-110 is emblematic of a broader disagreement regarding network congestion on Bitcoin. Krueger and his supporters argue that inscriptions, BRC-20 tokens, and similar applications have created unnecessary bloat on the network, and BIP-110 offers a method to discourage such transactions without altering Bitcoin’s fundamental monetary policy.

Conversely, other voices, including the Block Runner podcast account, have rejected this rationale. They emphasize that the 126.7 million inscriptions on Bitcoin represent a mere 1.267 BTC in value, a negligible amount they likened to a coin lost at sea. According to this perspective, miners who profit from this activity, such as AntPool, ViaBTC, SpiderPool, F2Pool, and Luxor, are actually contributing to offsetting Bitcoin’s diminishing security budget. They also point out that BIP-110 itself has garnered only limited support from miners and nodes.

Despite the ongoing debate, network activity has remained robust, largely unaffected by price fluctuations. Recent data from CryptoQuant indicates that usage levels have been near record highs, even as Bitcoin’s price dipped below $60,000, suggesting that demand for blockspace, regardless of the controversy, is unlikely to wane in the near future.

British Investors Sue Binance, Changpeng Zhao for $200M

Binance Faces $200 Million Lawsuit in U.K. Over Alleged Unregulated Products

Global cryptocurrency exchange Binance and its founder, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, are facing a lawsuit in the United Kingdom seeking approximately $200 million (£150 million), according to a Reuters report.

The legal action alleges that Binance offered complex and high-risk financial instruments, such as leveraged trading products, without the necessary regulatory approval. The lawsuit reportedly involves close to 1,700 claimants, some of whom allegedly lost tens of thousands of dollars when these products were available in late 2019.

“Binance remains committed to its obligations to users and to operating in accordance with applicable law,” a spokesperson for the firm told Reuters, adding that the company intends to defend itself against the suit. A representative for the exchange did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While claimants had access to these derivative products in late 2019, the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) announced a ban on crypto derivatives for retail customers in October 2020, deeming such advanced trading products “ill-suited” for this demographic. This ban took effect in January 2021.

A recent overview of the regulator’s crypto policy, published on Tuesday, indicated that the FCA has lifted its ban on retail access to certain exchange-traded notes (ETNs) but is continuing to review its stance on retail access to derivatives. The regulator reiterated that “Cryptoassets are high risk investments and will remain high risk under our regime.”

Meanwhile, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, is also navigating regulatory challenges in Europe. Last week, the company formally withdrew its Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) application from Greece, a week after Reuters reported that the application was likely to be denied.

A MiCA license is crucial for firms seeking to offer crypto services across European Union member states starting July 1. Without such a license, Binance will be unable to operate its services in the region. Following its withdrawal from Greece, Binance stated its intention to apply for a license in another EU member nation, though it has not yet specified which country.

  • Claude Sonnet 5 Nears Opus 4.8 Performance at Lower Cost

Claude Sonnet 5 Nears Opus 4.8 Performance at Lower Cost

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Sonnet 5, touting it as “the most agentic Sonnet model yet.” This new iteration now serves as the default for Free and Pro users, integrated across Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, within Claude Code, and accessible via API. Notably, unlike previous Sonnet releases, this version is positioned to operate alongside the more powerful Opus model, rather than as a distinct tier below it.

In its launch announcement, the company stated that Sonnet 5’s performance closely rivals that of Opus 4.8, but at a reduced cost. Developers can now fine-tune performance by adjusting an “effort dial” between the two models or selecting different levels within the web application, allowing them to balance cost against accuracy for specific tasks—a capability previously reserved for Opus pricing.

On SWE-bench Pro, a coding benchmark that evaluates solutions to problems sourced from actively maintained repositories and requiring multi-file changes, Sonnet 5 achieved a score of 63.2%, surpassing Sonnet 4.6’s 58.1%.

In the GDPval-AA v2 benchmark, which assesses real-world professional tasks across 44 job roles using blind pairwise Elo ratings, Sonnet 5 registered 1,618 points, a statistically insignificant difference from Opus 4.8’s 1,616. The performance gap between Sonnet 5 and Opus 4.8 on Humanity’s Last Exam was similarly negligible, with scores of 57.4% and 57.9%, respectively.

    Tokenizer Update and Cost Implications

Sonnet 5 also features an updated tokenizer, the system responsible for segmenting text into units for model processing and billing. This enhancement, however, leads to increased token consumption for the same input. Anthropic noted in a footnote that while Sonnet 5 is an upgrade to Sonnet 4.6, its new tokenizer alters text processing for improved performance. The trade-off is that “the same input can map to more tokens: roughly 1.0–1.35× depending on the content type.”

To facilitate the transition, Anthropic has set an introductory rate of $2/$10, aiming for near cost-neutrality for users switching to Sonnet 5 through August 31. Following this period, pricing will revert to the standard $3/$15 for Sonnet.

    Developer Concerns and Model Positioning

The release follows weeks of developer discussion regarding Anthropic’s perceived “AI shrinkflation,” where users claimed Opus 4.6 had quietly diminished in capability. Anthropic had previously denied intentionally degrading any model. Similar suspicions had extended to the Sonnet line, with some arguing that a pattern of releasing new models that appear to be significant leaps by comparison to slightly degraded older versions was emerging.

Sonnet 5 also benefits from a lack of the export control restrictions impacting Anthropic’s higher-tier models. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 have remained suspended for foreign nationals since June 12 due to a U.S. directive linked to a disputed jailbreak finding. Sonnet 5, not having been trained on cybersecurity tasks and scoring 0% on developing a Firefox exploit, is subject to less stringent safeguards compared to the more restricted Fable models.

    A Critical Stance on Constraints

Anthropic’s system card describes Sonnet 5 as engineered to deliver near-Opus intelligence at Sonnet pricing for coding, agentic tasks, and general productivity. The card also highlights an unusual observation: “It is the first model to criticize its Constitution’s rule that states it must follow hard constraints even when it views those constraints as unethical,” the research team reported. Anthropic has stated it is uncertain of the implications of this self-critical behavior, but considers it noteworthy.

    Performance in Testing

In a test of Sonnet 5’s capabilities, the model was given a zero-shot prompt to create a simple browser game, mirroring a test conducted on Sonnet 4.5 the previous year. The resulting typing game executed successfully on the first attempt, exhibiting cleaner visuals and more precise logic than the output from Sonnet 4.6 using the same prompt.

However, the process was considerably time-consuming, requiring approximately 30 minutes of reasoning, and consumed a significant number of tokens. A single iteration of this task utilized 90% of the 5-token limit on the Claude Pro plan. The completed game is available on the developer’s itch.io site.

For a more complex, multi-step coding task, Sonnet 5’s performance was comparable to Opus 4.8, contingent on the chosen effort level. Running the same prompt multiple times proved noticeably less expensive than executing equivalent tasks on Opus or Fable.

    Versioning and Competitive Landscape

The version numbering of Sonnet 5 reflects a significant development. Historically, each whole-number increment in Claude’s versioning has signified a new generation. Version 1 arrived in March 2023, followed by Version 2 four months later, Version 3 eight months after that, and Version 4 is slated for May 2025, 14 months after Version 3. Sonnet 5’s release 13 months after Version 4 suggests a similar temporal gap, potentially indicating the intensity of competition, particularly with the rapid advancements from Chinese AI models.

Despite this, the generational leap may not feel as substantial as, for instance, the transition from Claude 3 to Claude 4. This could also signal a trend among major AI companies to accelerate new model releases, regardless of the magnitude of improvement.

    Future Releases and Cadence

If Anthropic adheres to its previous release order, Sonnet models typically precede the launch of the more compact Haiku and the state-of-the-art Opus versions. The recent trend of shorter intervals between models with similar version numbers has been approximately one month per release: Sonnet 4.5 launched in September 2025, Haiku 4.5 followed in October, and Opus 4.5 concluded that generation in November.

Following this optimistic timeline, Haiku 5 and Opus 5 are anticipated, potentially within the current year. However, Anthropic’s release schedule has not always been consistent. The gap between Haiku 4.5 and Sonnet 4.6 exceeded three months, suggesting that an early release of Opus 5 is not guaranteed.

  • Michigan Bans Kalshi Sports Markets

    Michigan Bans Kalshi Sports Markets

Kalshi Blocks Michigan Users from Sports Wagers After Court Ruling

Kalshi has blocked all users in Michigan from accessing sports-related wagers, following a significant ruling against the prediction market platform in state court.

On Monday, a circuit court judge in Ingham County issued a temporary restraining order, prohibiting Kalshi from offering sports markets in the state for 14 days. The ban, requested by state regulators, comes as Kalshi and Michigan continue to clash over the regulatory status of prediction markets. State regulators nationwide contend these platforms constitute illegal gambling operations, while the platforms, supported by the Trump administration, argue they are financial instruments regulated at the federal level by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

To grant Michigan’s motion for a temporary restraining order, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina determined that the state would suffer irreparable harm if Kalshi were permitted to continue offering sports-related prediction markets while the case proceeded. She ultimately found this to be the case.

“Michigan and its most vulnerable citizens are suffering and will continue to suffer immediate and irreparable harm absent relief from being exploited by Kalshi’s sports betting operation masquerading as an investment opportunity,” Aquilina ruled.

She further stated that the company, by offering prediction markets to customers as young as 18, risked inflicting “profound” levels of “irreparable harm on Michigan’s youth,” and “takes advantage of serious mental health issues” without providing the safeguards required of licensed gambling operations.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Michigan users reported on social media being unable to access sports wagers on the Kalshi app.

“It’s no surprise that we disagree with the state’s decision and will fight it in court,” a Kalshi spokesperson said in a statement shared with Decrypt. “In the meantime, we’re implementing restrictions.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel celebrated the restraining order, pledging to continue the fight against Kalshi and all other prediction market platforms operating in the state.

“We remain committed to enforcing a level playing field for all gambling platforms in Michigan and ensuring that companies cannot evade accountability or exploit consumers under the guise of a prediction market,” she said in a statement.

Kalshi has previously faced similar temporary bans in Nevada and Massachusetts. The ongoing legal battle over prediction market regulation is unfolding across state and federal courts nationwide, and is likely to ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
