Major Banks Reportedly Exploring Stablecoin Issuance and Blockchain Networks

Major financial institutions are reportedly exploring or advancing plans for stablecoin issuance and the development of new blockchain networks, a move that could significantly alter the competitive landscape for existing crypto-native issuers like Circle and Coinbase. These developments coincide with ongoing legislative efforts in the U.S., such as the CLARITY Act, which aims to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets.

    Bank Initiatives and Market Reaction

Recent reports indicate that several prominent banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Santander, are investigating the possibility of issuing their own stablecoins. In a separate but related initiative, a consortium of over a dozen banks, operating under the name BankChain Alliance, is developing a new blockchain network. This network is intended to serve as a payment rail and is anticipated to support use cases such as stablecoins and tokenized deposits, with a projected launch in the first half of 2027.

The news has already had an observable impact on the market, with shares of Circle and Coinbase reportedly falling more than 3% in the past day. This market reaction suggests investor concern that stablecoins issued and distributed at scale by major banks could reduce the market share currently held by crypto-native issuers and their products, such as Circle’s USDC.

Details on Bank Plans and Alliances

While JPMorgan Chase has explored a potential stablecoin, the company has stated that no product is currently under development. However, a consortium of more than a dozen banks, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Santander, is reportedly advancing plans for a commercial-focused stablecoin. The BankChain Alliance has announced its intention to create an industry-owned and industry-governed blockchain network. According to the Wall Street Journal, the organizations involved in the BankChain Alliance, modeled on the Federal Home Loan Bank system, represent a significant portion of the U.S. banking sector, encompassing approximately 3,283 institutions and $21.8 trillion in assets. Planned use cases for the BankChain network include treasury management, supply-chain financing, cash management, tokenized deposits, stablecoins, smart payment tools, and automated settlement.

    Legislative Context and Future Outlook

Coinbase has been a prominent advocate for the CLARITY Act, with its CEO Brian Armstrong and other executives actively urging the Senate to advance the bill. However, at the time of reporting, the CLARITY Act had not yet passed the Senate, and certain issues, such as its treatment of stablecoin yield, remained to be resolved. The progress of these bank initiatives and the legislative process are expected to remain central to discussions surrounding competition in the stablecoin market.

These developments highlight a potential shift in the digital asset space, with traditional financial institutions increasingly exploring blockchain technology and stablecoin issuance. While the BankChain Alliance network is anticipated for 2027, the exact timelines for other bank-specific stablecoin products remain uncertain. The BankChain Alliance is also reportedly seeking a technology partner for its network. The ongoing evolution of these initiatives, alongside legislative developments, will be closely watched by market participants.

    Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Several major banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Santander, are reportedly exploring or advancing plans to issue their own stablecoins. JPMorgan Chase’s stablecoin discussions remain preliminary and no product is under development.

    Broader Context

  • Dallas Fed: Tokenized Deposits May Cut Bank Lending by $700 Billion

Dallas Fed: Tokenized Deposits May Cut Bank Lending by $700 Billion

Tokenized Deposits Could Undermine Bank Stability, Dallas Fed Warns

Tokenized deposits, while potentially enabling faster payments, could also destabilize bank funding, according to a new report from the Dallas Federal Reserve. The study, released Tuesday, explores the implications of widespread adoption of this technology on bank liquidity and the practice of maturity transformation—where banks use demandable deposits to fund longer-term loans.

The report highlights that advancements in distributed ledger technology, most notably blockchain, have paved the way for digital payment infrastructure and real-time settlement. While stablecoins have attracted significant attention and regulatory scrutiny both domestically and internationally, tokenized deposits have received comparatively less focus.

Unlike stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, tokenized deposits are regulated and can offer interest payments. However, the Dallas Fed report cautions that features like instant settlement, smart contracts, and agentic artificial intelligence could empower customers to more easily seek higher yields, thereby diminishing the “stickiness” of current deposits.

“Sticky deposits rely in part on the existence of frictions preventing rapid reallocation from one bank to another,” the agency stated. “Instant settlement would allow deposit holders who prioritize yield to switch banks almost instantaneously.”

The prospect of faster deposit outflows and increased sensitivity to interest rate fluctuations could lead banks to become more hesitant in holding longer-term, fixed-rate assets. The Dallas Fed estimates that a 10% increase in deposit-rate sensitivity could reduce banks’ capacity to manage interest-rate risk by approximately $700 billion in 10-year-equivalent terms.

Furthermore, the authors calculated separately that a 10% reduction in the weighted average life of deposits could diminish the banking system’s maturity-transformation capacity by $580 billion.

“Alternatively, banks could strive to leave the composition of lending close to unchanged by altering their liabilities in other ways,” the report suggests. “This would likely include greater reliance on term debt issuance; on the margin, the economics of such lending activity funded by wholesale debt would resemble those of non-bank financial firms and would thus likely adversely impact the cost of credit for consumers and businesses.”

This report emerges amid a growing wave of tokenized payment experiments by financial institutions. In October 2025, Custodia and Vantage launched a U.S. tokenized-deposit network. Barclays was reportedly exploring tokenized deposits and stablecoin payments as of February 2026, and BMO announced plans in March for round-the-clock tokenized cash settlement in collaboration with CME Group and Google Cloud.

More recently, in July, the global payment system Swift revealed a pilot program involving 17 international banks to facilitate the transfer of tokenized deposits outside of standard banking hours. However, final settlement in this pilot would still be contingent on legacy payment systems operating during business hours.

  • Las Vegas Businessman Convicted in $24 Million Cryptocurrency Investment Fraud

Las Vegas Businessman Convicted in $24 Million Cryptocurrency Investment Fraud

A Las Vegas businessman, Brent C. Kovar, has been convicted by a federal jury for defrauding over 400 investors of approximately $24 million through a cryptocurrency investment scheme operated by his company, Profit Connect. The scheme ran from late 2017 through July 2021.

According to the US Justice Department, Kovar misled investors with false claims about Profit Connect’s operations and financial health. He allegedly promised fixed annual returns of 15% to 30%, a 100% money-back may provide, and asserted that the company was backed by hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency reserves. Furthermore, Kovar falsely claimed that investments were insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

Prosecutors demonstrated that Kovar was aware of these misrepresentations. Evidence revealed that Profit Connect was not profitable, lacked the purported crypto reserves, and was unable to fulfill the promised returns or may provide them. Instead, Kovar allegedly diverted investor funds for personal expenses, employee gifts, and the purchase of a house. He also reportedly used funds from new investors to repay earlier ones, creating a deceptive appearance of profitability and legitimacy.

Kovar was found guilty on 11 counts of wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud, and two counts of money laundering. “The victims in this case thought they were engaged in revolutionary technological advancement, but it was merely a deception crafted by the falsehoods and trickery of Mr. Kovar,” stated Special Agent in Charge Christopher S. Delzotto of the FBI Las Vegas Field Office. Special Agent in Charge Ryan Korner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Office of Inspector General reported that Kovar’s claim of FDIC insurance was also false.

Kovar is scheduled for sentencing on November 30, 2026, and faces a potential maximum penalty of 280 years in prison.

In a separate case, Japheth Dillman was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud for defrauding more than 20 investors of nearly $1 million through a cryptocurrency trading fund, Block Bits Capital. This scheme operated from June 2017 to August 2018.

Dillman and a co-conspirator allegedly told investors that their fund used an automated trading software called “Autotrader” to generate profits. However, evidence presented at trial indicated that Dillman knew the trading algorithm was not functioning as claimed. Investor funds were reportedly used for personal payments and invested in other high-risk cryptocurrency ventures that suffered significant losses, rather than for the promised trading activities.

Dillman, 48, remains released on bond and is scheduled for sentencing on December 8, 2026. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

These convictions underscore a pattern of deceptive practices within the cryptocurrency investment sector, where misrepresentations regarding profitability, technology, and security are common tactics used to defraud investors. Regulatory bodies continue to pursue enforcement actions against such fraudulent schemes.

    Broader Context

Source materials place the factual news in this context: The article discusses two separate but similar cryptocurrency investment fraud cases.

    Why This Matters

These convictions highlight the persistent risks and deceptive practices within the cryptocurrency investment space. They serve as a cautionary tale for potential investors, demonstrating the significant financial losses that can result from fraudulent schemes and underscoring the ongoing enforcement actions by regulatory bodies against such activities.

  • Jury Finds Man Guilty in $24M AI Crypto Ponzi Scheme

Jury Finds Man Guilty in $24M AI Crypto Ponzi Scheme

Jury Convicts Las Vegas Businessman in $24 Million Cryptocurrency Ponzi Scheme

A federal jury in Las Vegas has found a local business owner guilty of orchestrating a $24 million cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme that defrauded at least 400 investors, the Department of Justice announced Monday.

Brent C. Kovar, the owner of Profit Connect, a Las Vegas-based company, operated the scheme from late 2017 until July 2021. He falsely claimed the company utilized artificial intelligence software on a supercomputer to mine cryptocurrency and verify transactions on other networks. Investors were enticed with promises of fixed annual returns ranging from 15% to 30%, a full money-back guarantee, and assurances that the company was backed by hundreds of millions of dollars in crypto reserves.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Kovar was aware Profit Connect was not profitable, possessed no actual reserves, and was incapable of delivering the advertised returns or honoring its guarantees. Funds from new investors were allegedly used to sustain company operations, purchase employee gifts, and acquire a house for Kovar. A portion of this money was also recirculated to earlier investors, misrepresented as mining profits.

Adding to the deception, Kovar reportedly informed investors that their funds were insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). This claim was investigated by the FDIC’s Office of Inspector General, in conjunction with the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation.

Following a nine-day trial, Kovar was convicted on 11 counts of wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud, and two counts of money laundering. He is scheduled for sentencing on November 30 and faces a potential maximum sentence of 280 years, though the final term will be determined by the judge based on federal sentencing guidelines.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had previously intervened, shutting down Profit Connect five years ago. In July 2021, the SEC obtained a restraining order and asset freeze, initially estimating investor losses at up to $12 million from at least 277 investors. This figure is now understood to be half of the total losses established by prosecutors. The SEC noted that over 90% of the company’s income originated from investors, and none of these funds were used for actual cryptocurrency trading.

Kovar reportedly ran the business with his mother, Joy, who was 86 at the time. The SEC indicated that $1.2 million was transferred into her personal account in ten equal installments over less than two months, with an additional $1.7 million withdrawn through cash, credit card payments, and the purchase of a vehicle. The Justice Department’s announcement on Monday specifically named Brent Kovar in relation to the criminal convictions.

This is not Kovar’s first encounter with regulatory action. The SEC had previously filed a civil injunction against him and his father, Glenn, in 2009 for their involvement in a “pump-and-dump” scheme operated through a company called Skyway Global, which also resulted in $12 million in investor losses.

Investment fraud continues to be the most significant category of cryptocurrency-related crime reported to the FBI. In 2025, the bureau logged $11.37 billion in losses, a 22% increase from the previous year. The Consumer Federation of America, using a multiplier to account for unreported fraud, estimated total losses to be $80.7 billion, with individuals over 60 accounting for $4.4 billion of the reported figures.

  • Dogecoin Price Action Faces Scrutiny Amidst Divergent Market Signals

Dogecoin Price Action Faces Scrutiny Amidst Divergent Market Signals

Dogecoin (DOGE) has seen a 3.02% price bounce to $0.090 in the last 24 hours, yet this uptick is shadowed by conflicting indicators. Data indicates that whale wallets have been reducing their holdings, and inflows into spot Dogecoin ETFs have cooled, suggesting a complex market sentiment that warrants careful analysis.

    Whale Activity and ETF Trends

Wallets holding between 1 million and 100 million DOGE have collectively offloaded approximately 280 million tokens since Friday. This distribution by larger holders contrasts with Dogecoin’s 34% rally last week. Concurrently, spot Dogecoin ETFs recorded inflows of $146,020 on Monday, a significant decrease from the $653,420 seen in the prior week, according to data.

    Technical Indicators and Momentum

Technically, DOGE is trading above its 50-day EMA ($0.076) and 100-day EMA ($0.081), and has reclaimed a downtrend line near $0.070, which now acts as support. Immediate protection is noted at the $0.088 horizontal level. Analysts suggest that a sustained break above $0.094, supported by consistent ETF inflows, could potentially target $0.10 to $0.104.

However, momentum indicators present a more cautious picture. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is near 77, indicating overbought conditions. Furthermore, the long-to-short ratio stands at 0.93, approaching a one-month low. This positioning data suggests traders may be anticipating a pullback, even as the price holds steady. A base case scenario, according to the article, involves consolidation between $0.088 and $0.094 as overbought conditions subside. A break below $0.088 could lead to a retest of the 100-day EMA near $0.081, followed by the $0.076 level.

Broader Market Context and Investor Focus

The broader cryptocurrency market sentiment remains choppy, with Bitcoin’s price action heavily influencing assets like Dogecoin. Macro liquidity conditions are also a factor traders are monitoring. The current market dynamics suggest that while DOGE’s chart setup appears structurally bullish, underlying momentum and investor positioning warrant caution. Whale distribution and a long-to-short ratio below one indicate that the easier gains from the recent rally may have already been realized.

This environment is reportedly prompting some traders to explore earlier-stage investment opportunities. For example, the Maxi Doge (MAXI) presale has raised $4,848,993.00, with tokens priced at $0.0002835. The project offers dynamic APY staking and other features.

Uncertainties persist regarding Dogecoin’s immediate recent price action, specifically whether it can sustain momentum above $0.090 or if it may stall. The impact of macro liquidity conditions also remains a key consideration. It is not guaranteed that the current Dogecoin rally is sustainable without further support from institutional investors or large holders.

    Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Dogecoin saw a short-term price increase, but underlying data from whale wallet activity and ETF inflows suggests a potential weakening of buying pressure. Whether DOGE price can push through $0.090 or stall into another leg down.

HMRC Issues 81,000 Crypto Tax Warnings for Unpaid Bull Run Gains

HMRC Intensifies Crypto Tax Scrutiny, Sends Over 81,000 Warning Letters

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has significantly ramped up its oversight of UK cryptocurrency users in the 2025-2026 financial year, reportedly dispatching more than 81,000 warning letters to individuals suspected of having unpaid tax liabilities. This figure, revealed by the BBC following a review of a freedom of information request, represents a nearly threefold increase from the 27,714 letters issued in 2024.

HMRC believes a substantial portion of the undeclared tax stems from gains realized during the cryptocurrency bull market that spanned from 2022 to 2025. The tax authority has reminded recipients that tax obligations can be triggered by various actions, including selling, gifting, exchanging, or using cryptocurrency for purchases.

Failure to comply with tax regulations can lead to penalties equivalent to up to 100% of the owed tax, in addition to accrued interest. Offshore transfers, in particular, may carry more severe repercussions.

This intensified crackdown is poised to broaden further with HMRC set to acquire new powers in 2027. Under these forthcoming regulations, offshore firms will be mandated to provide customer information to the UK tax authority. HMRC estimates this measure could generate an additional £315 million (approximately $430 million) by 2030.

Neela Chauhan, a partner at accounting firm UHY Hacker Young, commented to the BBC that many cryptocurrency traders are young and lack prior experience navigating HMRC procedures. She noted that some operate under the misconception that the agency has limited insight into their digital asset activities. Chauhan also suggested that authorities suspect many investors of tax evasion and anticipates that identifying unpaid liabilities among wealthier holders will become considerably easier once the new powers are enacted.

Banking Access Emerges as a Major Industry Concern

While HMRC tightens its regulatory grip, access to banking services is becoming a significant challenge for the cryptocurrency industry. Earlier this month, Parliament’s Crypto and Digital Assets All-Party Parliamentary Group formally requested explanations from the chief executives of major UK banks regarding their dealings with cryptocurrency businesses. Labour MP Gurinder Singh Josan and Lord Vaizey of Didcot initiated this inquiry following persistent complaints from firms struggling to open bank accounts and reports of payment restrictions.

The parliamentary group has questioned banks on their policies, transaction limits, the rationale behind these decisions, and whether the UK’s upcoming cryptocurrency regulations might influence their approach. While acknowledging the necessity for banks to combat financial crime and protect customers, the MPs emphasized that firms should be assessed based on their individual risk profiles rather than being broadly categorized by their sector. Lord Vaizey described the banking access issues as “an unnecessary piece of friction.”

Research conducted by the UK Cryptoasset Business Council indicates that banks are currently blocking or delaying approximately 40% of attempted transfers to digital asset exchanges.

  • Cryptocurrency Market Sees Dip Amid Reports of Wintermute’s Substantial Short Positions

Cryptocurrency Market Sees Dip Amid Reports of Wintermute’s Substantial Short Positions

Major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, experienced a notable price dip on August 22, 2026. This market movement coincided with reports indicating that Wintermute, a prominent market maker, has been building substantial short positions.

Bitcoin’s price fell from over $77,000 to approximately $75,500 during the weekend. This correction followed a significant rally where Bitcoin surged from $64,000 to nearly $80,000 in less than 48 hours prior to the dip. Other major altcoins also saw considerable losses, with Ethereum dropping by 5% to below $2,400 and XRP declining by 6.5% to under $1.50.

Reports suggest that Wintermute has been active in the derivatives market, particularly on the Hyperliquid platform. According to Onchain Lens, the firm reportedly sent nearly $60 million worth of BTC and SOL to exchanges like Binance and Coinbase, potentially signaling a move to sell these assets. Further analysis from Onchain Lens indicates that Wintermute has established a significant futures position on Hyperliquid, with the majority of this leveraged trade being short positions. Current data shows Wintermute holding $160.03 million in open positions on Hyperliquid, comprising $146.19 million in shorts and $13.85 million in longs. These positions are reportedly sitting at an unrealized loss of $3.66 million while earning $2.14 million in funding.

The market downturn was accompanied by substantial liquidations. CoinGlass data shows that almost $100 million in long positions were liquidated in the past hour, with Bitcoin and Ethereum liquidations each accounting for around $41.5 million. On a daily scale, total liquidations exceeded $350 million, impacting over 90,000 traders, which is noted as a significant number for a weekend.

While the timing of Wintermute’s reported short positions aligns with the market dip, the exact causality remains uncertain. The price correction could be attributed to a combination of factors, including profit-taking after a rapid ascent and the reported institutional trading activity. It is important to note that the extent to which Wintermute’s actions directly influenced the price drop, and whether other market factors were at play, are subjects of ongoing observation.

This market event highlights the dynamic interplay between institutional trading strategies and cryptocurrency price action, alongside the significant impact of liquidations on overall market volatility. Further developments and official statements from involved parties may provide more clarity on the situation.

    Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Bitcoin’s price fell from over $77,000 to $75,500, with altcoins like Ethereum and XRP also experiencing significant losses. The exact timing of Wintermute building its short positions relative to the price dip.

Trump Plummets 33% as Team Moves $6.2M to Exchanges Post-Surge

Crypto Market Surge Sees Meme Coin TRUMP Plunge After Team Moves Millions to Exchanges

The cryptocurrency market experienced a significant surge in recent days, with Bitcoin climbing $15,000 in under 48 hours, a trend that altcoins largely mirrored with substantial gains. Among the beneficiaries were several meme coins, including Official Trump (TRUMP), a token associated with the First Family. However, in a pattern that has become familiar, the team behind the asset appears to have capitalized on the rally by selling off portions of the token.

On-chain data, as reported by Lookonchain and citing Arkham Intelligence, indicates that the TRUMP team recently transferred 2.62 million coins to the cryptocurrency exchange OKX. This transaction was valued at approximately $6.2 million. While the mere transfer of tokens to an exchange does not definitively confirm a sale, the team’s history, coupled with the recent price surge, strongly suggests that they have indeed offloaded more of the asset.

The TRUMP token emerged just 48 hours prior to Donald Trump’s inauguration as U.S. President in January 2025. It rapidly ascended to an all-time high exceeding $73 within minutes before undergoing a significant correction. Since then, reports have surfaced following each rebound, alleging that the team has sold portions of the token, despite denials from the former President regarding profiting from it. Nevertheless, several U.S. Senators have called on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate the meme coin, citing concerns that it may have facilitated fraud or illicit enrichment at the expense of retail investors.

The TRUMP token experienced a dramatic surge yesterday, with gains reaching double and even triple-digit percentages, propelling it back into the top 100 altcoins by market capitalization. The token began its rally below $1.50 and peaked at over $3.60, its highest price since March. However, following the reports of sales, the token was rejected at this high and subsequently slumped to $2.40 as of press time, marking a 33% decline from its recent peak.

Despite this sharp drop, TRUMP remains within the top 100 altcoins, with its market capitalization currently around $600 million. The token’s performance since its January 19 all-time high is starkly evident, trading 97% below that peak. Its all-time low was recorded just last week at $1.37.

  • Coldcard Firmware 5.6.1 Mandates User Entropy Post-$100M Exploit

Coldcard Firmware 5.6.1 Mandates User Entropy Post-$100M Exploit

Coldcard Firmware Update Mandates Manual Randomness for New Wallets After Major Exploit

Coinkite, the company behind the Coldcard hardware wallet, has released a significant firmware update that requires users to manually introduce randomness when generating new wallet seeds. This move comes in the wake of a critical vulnerability in the device’s random number generator that exposed customer funds to attackers.

The new firmware update necessitates a minimum of 50 dice rolls, 128 coin flips, or 65 timed key presses to generate a new seed. This measure is designed to supplement the device’s internal randomness sources, ensuring a more robust and secure seed generation process.

The update applies to two distinct firmware tracks: version 5.6.1 for the Mk4 and Mk5 models, and version 1.5.1Q for the Q model, which features a larger form factor with an integrated keyboard and QR code scanner.

Coinkite stated that the user-provided randomness is combined with the device’s internal randomness derived from the STM32 TRNG and both secure elements.

The company traced the original vulnerability to a build and link error that inadvertently bypassed a setting intended to disable a software-based random number generator. This allowed MicroPython’s Yasmarang PRNG to be used for seed generation, a path that was active since March 2021. The flaw resulted in affected seeds possessing approximately 72 bits of entropy, falling short of the expected 128 bits. This weakness was exploited on July 30, leading to the theft of 594.5 BTC from 500 addresses.

The updated firmware, 5.6.1, now includes a boot-time verification that ensures random number generation is routed through the intended hardware path. The device will halt operation if this check fails. Coinkite has replaced Yasmarang with a SHA-256 Hash_DRBG, compliant with NIST SP 800-90A standards. This new generator is seeded at startup with a full 256-bit digest from both secure elements, a significant improvement from the previous firmware’s 32-bit truncation.

The “key mashing” feature, inspired by Peter Todd’s push-button RNG design, hashes the timing of keypad presses at CPU-cycle resolution. The initial press establishes a reference point, with each subsequent gap of the 64 following presses contributing two bits of entropy.

“Installing this update does not make an existing vulnerable seed safe,” Coinkite cautioned. The company strongly advises users whose seeds may have been generated on affected firmware between 2021 and July 2026 to create a new seed and transfer their Bitcoin (BTC) to the new wallet. The Mk2 and Mk3 models are not included in this release, and their minimum fixed version remains 4.2.0.

In a separate security enhancement, Coldcard devices now re-verify transaction data before signing to mitigate risks associated with compromised USB hosts. Previously, an attacker could alter transaction outputs after a user had approved them, with the signature still appearing valid. The device now performs a byte-level recheck, displaying a “Transaction modified” warning if any discrepancies are found.

Coinkite’s new Security Status page details four independent reviews, including a real-device test that confirmed eight hardware RNG reads for a 32-byte seed request and a firmware rebuild that matched every byte of the signed firmware.

The company emphasized that these checks do not constitute a “complete audit of every firmware binary.” As previously reported, confirmed losses from the exploit have surpassed $100 million, with Galaxy Research estimating 1,596 BTC stolen from approximately 7,300 addresses. A suspected fourth wave of attacks on August 3 reportedly swept nearly 449 BTC.

  • MANTRA Halts Blockchain Amid Cosmos EVM Glitch, Token Plummets

MANTRA Halts Blockchain Amid Cosmos EVM Glitch, Token Plummets

MANTRA Halts Blockchain Operations Following Cosmos EVM Module Incident, Token Tumbles to Record Low

MANTRA has suspended its blockchain network after an incident impacted its Cosmos EVM module, a development that sent its native token to an all-time low on August 21. The project’s team stated that two wallet addresses were affected, but no user funds were compromised. A patched release is currently undergoing testing, with a potential network restart anticipated later today.

    Network Freeze and Investigation

Initially, MANTRA announced the chain halt as a precautionary measure while investigating the incident. All network endpoints and transactions were frozen, and deposits and withdrawals to and from the MANTRA Chain were temporarily disrupted. A subsequent status update confirmed the network remained halted as developers worked on and tested a remediation solution. Transactions, transfers, and staking operations were unavailable, though MANTRA reiterated that user funds were unaffected by the halt itself.

Root Cause Identified and Remediation Underway

The team has since pinpointed the root cause, confirming the incident was isolated to the Cosmos EVM module and affected two wallet addresses before the threat was contained. “No user funds were exploited,” the team emphasized. They also confirmed that a full network snapshot was taken prior to initiating the restart process. The patched v8.4.0 release addresses the underlying vulnerability and is being tested on the DuKong testnet. The project aims for a coordinated mainnet upgrade and restart later today, contingent on successful testing. Validators have been instructed to keep their mainnet nodes offline until the restart is officially announced.

    Token Performance and Historical Context

The native token, formerly known as OM, now trades under the MANTRA ticker. This change followed a 1:4 non-dilutive redenomination and ticker swap in March of this year, where holders received four MANTRA tokens for each former OM token without altering their overall value at the time of conversion. Following the chain halt, the token experienced a significant drop of over 18%, falling from approximately $0.0050 to $0.0041, marking a new all-time low. At the time of reporting, the token had recovered some of its value, trading near $0.0046, but remained approximately 82% below its March 4 all-time high of $0.02627.

This incident echoes a previous significant downturn for the token. In April 2025, OM plummeted from above $6 to below $1 in under an hour, erasing roughly 90% of its market value and triggering liquidations exceeding $70 million. At that time, CEO John Patrick Mullin attributed the collapse to “reckless forced closures” by centralized exchanges. The repercussions continued into January 2026, when MANTRA announced staff reductions across multiple teams, citing rapid expansion in 2024 and early 2025 that had led to an unsustainable cost base following a challenging market period and the token’s prior collapse. Mullin had also pledged to burn 300 million OM tokens after the April 2025 crash, a burn that was completed later that month.

MANTRA has stated that a comprehensive post-mortem analysis will be released subsequently. For the time being, the chain remains paused as the patched software undergoes testing, leaving users with limited information beyond the team’s updates.
