Pi Network (PI) Update: Essential Information for Pioneers

Pi Network Enhances Launchpad with New Test Token and Streamlined Participation

The core development team behind the Pi Network project has unveiled an updated participation and flow model for its Pi Launchpad, aiming to foster stronger community ties and boost engagement. This initiative includes opening up testing for a second token, dubbed ‘SLICE,’ which will be available for two weeks.

According to a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the Pi Launchpad has integrated data and feedback gathered from its initial testnet token. That first test commenced on PiDay 2026 (March 14) and saw participation from nearly 480,000 Pioneers, who provided “valuable feedback on the Launchpad mechanism.”

The team stated that this feedback has been instrumental in refining the participation process, leading to a simpler flow, updated Launchpad mechanics, and an improved user experience. Following these enhancements, Pi Network has now launched its second test token, ‘SLICE.’ Testing for SLICE began and will continue until Pi2Day on June 28.

Pioneers interested in participating in the SLICE test are instructed to:

    • Open Pi Launchpad within the Pi Browser.
    • Review the SLICE test token and its associated project details.
    • Select a commitment amount using Test-Pi.
    • Confirm their participation.
    • Engage with the Slice of Pi application and submit feedback.

The purpose of this testing phase is to assess the effectiveness of the updates in achieving key objectives and to offer Pi Network users another opportunity to “learn the new ecosystem token mechanics.” The development team emphasized that SLICE is strictly a Testnet token and will not be deployed to the Mainnet.

Despite these protocol updates and product launches, the native Pi token has experienced significant price depreciation. The broader market downturn in recent weeks severely impacted the token, pushing it to an all-time low of under $0.12 on June 6.

While the token has since seen a modest recovery of approximately 7%, its overall market performance remains challenging. It is currently down 95.7% from its all-time high recorded in late February 2025.

However, certain on-chain metrics and the upcoming token unlock schedule suggest that PI may have passed its lowest point. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently in deeply oversold territory, which could signal an impending major reversal, although a clear breakout attempt has yet to materialize.

  • Hoskinson Abandons X for Discord Amidst ‘Endless Rage’

Hoskinson Abandons X for Discord Amidst ‘Endless Rage’

Cardano Co-Founder Plans Exodus from X to Discord Amidst Online Toxicity

Charles Hoskinson, a co-founder of the Cardano blockchain, has announced plans to transition the ADA community away from the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, following months of enduring what he describes as expletive-laden attacks.

Hoskinson revealed in a late Thursday post on X that he has been in discussions with Phillip Pon, the chief executive of EMURGO, to develop a strategy for establishing a Discord-based hub. This initiative aims to foster a more positive and productive environment for the Cardano ecosystem.

“Dropping by to let everyone know that I spoke with Phillip Pon, and we are working out a plan to create a discord for a great migration of the Cardano community from X,” Hoskinson wrote. He envisions the new platform offering “happy, positive, well-moderated channels,” a stark contrast to what he characterized as the “drama, lies, endless rage, and embittered people” prevalent on X.

Despite his intention to move the community, Hoskinson indicated he would continue to use X for livestreams due to his substantial following, which exceeds one million users.

The blockchain developer also stated that future “Ask Me Anything” sessions would be exclusively hosted on the Cardano and Midnight Discord servers. Midnight is a privacy-focused blockchain protocol developed by IOG.

“I’ve seen some commentary that broadcasting means I’m back on X. For those people, I can’t solve stupid… Enjoy your scandals of the week and FUD,” he commented, dismissing suggestions that his continued use of X for broadcasts signified a change of heart.

This proposed migration comes after months of Hoskinson publicly voicing concerns about the alleged toxicity X has introduced into the Cardano community. In an April 24 YouTube livestream, he mentioned working on an artificial intelligence project named Project Nyx, intended to automate some of his online interactions. However, X’s platform rules, which require AI-managed accounts to be labeled as bots, complicated these plans by potentially reducing post visibility.

Last week, Cardano community member Christian Taylor conducted an analysis of approximately 130 responses to an X post urging users to cease “constant anti-@IOHK_Charles threads.” Taylor’s findings, aided by the AI tool Grok, highlighted two primary issues Hoskinson faces on the platform. Grok identified “raw toxicity,” with roughly one in three replies being hostile, abusive, or heavily profane. The AI also detected patterns of targeted harassment, including consistent linguistic styles, thinly veiled anonymous accounts, and “cross-chain references that point toward organized amplification.”

However, the analysis also acknowledged that some negative comments stemmed from genuine community frustration, including concerns over financial losses, delivery timelines, and questions regarding Cardano’s leadership and their accountability.

In market news, ADA, the native cryptocurrency of Cardano, saw a modest increase of over 3% following Hoskinson’s announcement, trading near $0.17 at the time of reporting. This uptick contrasts with the previous week, when a separate announcement by Hoskinson regarding a temporary break from social media led to an 11% drop in the coin’s value.

XRP Poised for Surge? Ripple Unveils XRPL AI Starter Kit

Ripple Unveils AI Toolkit for XRP Ledger, Sparking Speculation

Ripple has launched a new developer toolkit designed to facilitate autonomous, machine-to-machine payments on the XRP Ledger, a move that could serve as a significant catalyst for XRP holders. The XRPL AI Starter Kit aims to empower developers to build agentic payment applications capable of settling invoices, paying for computational resources, and executing transactions without requiring human intervention.

    Phased Rollout and Stablecoin Integration

The Starter Kit is being released in phases, with the initial phase focusing on developers creating agentic payment systems. A key feature of the toolkit is its full integration with RLUSD, Ripple’s USD-backed stablecoin. This integration is intended to support price-stable workflows, such as payroll processing and agent-to-agent commerce, directly on the XRP Ledger Decentralized Exchange (DEX). The toolkit also incorporates native institutional safeguards, including escrow, multi-signature capabilities, deposit authorization, and trust lines, eliminating the need for custom smart contracts.

    Dense News Cycle for XRP

The introduction of the XRPL AI Starter Kit arrives amidst a particularly active news cycle for XRP, fueled by the expansion of developer tooling, the growing AI payment infrastructure narrative, and ongoing speculation surrounding potential Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs).

XRP Price Dynamics and Potential Scenarios

XRP is currently trading in the $1.10-$1.15 range, remaining significantly below its previous peaks despite recent positive market sentiment. The daily trading range indicates dispersed liquidity and continued elevated volatility.

Technically, XRP appears to be in a consolidation phase, trading between a notable support level and resistance near the $1-$1.3 zone. Analysis of XRP’s price structure suggests that institutional demand, rather than retail flows, is currently the primary driver of its price movements.

Three potential scenarios are being considered. The first posits that measurable developer adoption of the XRPL AI Starter Kit could propel XRP’s price to reclaim levels above $2.50. The second scenario anticipates continued constructive sentiment, with XRP oscillating between $1.00 and $1.30 as traders await a more substantial catalyst. The third, bearish scenario suggests that disappointing developer uptake could lead XRP to retest support below $1.00. Within the community, speculative estimates of XRP reaching $5 by late 2025 are circulating.

Broader Market Trends and Emerging Infrastructure Plays

The announcement of XRP’s AI Starter Kit highlights a broader market trend: significant capital is flowing into cross-chain infrastructure and developer tooling. However, given XRP’s current market capitalization, the potential for asymmetric upside that early-stage investors seek may already be largely factored into near-term price expectations. This dynamic is drawing attention to earlier-stage infrastructure projects.

One such project is LiquidChain ($LIQUID), a Layer 3 infrastructure initiative aiming to establish itself as a cross-chain liquidity layer. LiquidChain seeks to consolidate liquidity from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana into a unified execution environment, allowing developers to deploy applications once and access all three ecosystems simultaneously.

The LiquidChain presale has raised $830,000 to date, with the $LIQUID token currently priced at $0.01468. Its core architecture features include a Unified Liquidity Layer, Single-Step Execution, Verifiable Settlement, and a Deploy-Once model, all designed to address the fragmentation challenges inherent in multi-chain development.

The growing traction of the AI infrastructure narrative around XRP is also relevant to L3 settlement layers like LiquidChain, as autonomous agents require unified liquidity rails rather than siloed blockchain environments.

Alltoscan Unveils Token Burn Mechanism to Reshape ATS Supply Dynamics

Delaware, USA – June 10, 2026 – Alltoscan, a provider of multi-blockchain explorer ecosystem infrastructure, has announced the official launch schedule for its new token burn mechanism, designed to systematically restructure its native tokenomics model.

This deflationary protocol follows the company’s verified strategic roadmap, establishing a fixed schedule to gradually reduce the total available supply of its native utility token, ATS.

Scheduled Phases and Supply Reduction Targets

The native token of the Alltoscan ecosystem, ATS, currently has a maximum total supply of 100 million tokens. According to technical documentation released by the development team, the newly implemented protocol will automate consecutive burn events until the maximum supply reaches a fixed ceiling of exactly 30 million tokens.

The initial phase of this protocol is scheduled to be executed between June 25th and June 30th, initiating the first major reduction phase toward the long-term 70% supply contraction target.

Verification of the Buyback Mechanism and Circulating Supply Data

In contrast to conventional ecosystem burn models that utilize locked or unreleased treasury reserves, the Alltoscan development team confirmed that this protocol directly targets active market supply. The assets designated for the permanent burn address consist entirely of ATS tokens accumulated via the company’s corporate revenue-funded buyback program, implemented since the token’s initial public listing.

By removing active tokens directly from the open market rather than non-circulating smart contracts, the mechanism is engineered to directly alter the current supply-demand equilibrium across integrated global digital asset exchanges.

Current Protocol Metrics and Infrastructure Valuations

According to current market dashboard tracking data, Alltoscan’s structural financial metrics reflect the following baselines prior to the execution of the June protocol update:

The reduction of the total token framework from 100 million to 30 million structurally modifies the underlying distribution metrics. Industry tracking models indicate that reducing total supply while holding baseline market capitalization constant alters the mathematical allocation per token unit. This adjustment comes as the protocol operates below its historical valuation peak of $2.5, recorded during previous infrastructure deployment phases.

    Historical Precedents in Decentralized Tokenomics

The implementation of systematic supply adjustment protocols represents an established method within decentralized networks seeking to align long-term ecosystem balance.

Alltoscan’s deployment relies on a programmatic corporate buyback framework tied directly to functional platform performance and operational utility revenues.

Zcash Surges Past $470 on Ironwood Upgrade News

Zcash Recovers as Network Prepares for Integrity-Boosting Upgrade

Zcash (ZEC), the native cryptocurrency of the privacy-focused Zcash network, is showing signs of recovery after a significant price drop. The digital asset has surged back above $400 in recent days, rebounding from a low in the $300 range.

This price resurgence coincides with the Zcash team’s announcement of a forthcoming upgrade designed to address a critical integrity flaw within the network. The Ironwood Upgrade, slated for late July, aims to empower users with the ability to independently verify the circulating supply of ZEC, thereby preventing the creation of counterfeit coins.

The necessity for the Ironwood upgrade emerged following a series of events initiated by Zcash researcher Taylor Hornby. Hornby identified a vulnerability within the network’s most recent shielded transaction system, known as Orchard. This counterfeiting vulnerability in Orchard prompted the Zcash team to implement a two-stage upgrade, which was completed by June 2.

Amidst considerable concern from the cryptocurrency community, developers acknowledged that it was impossible to definitively determine whether the vulnerability had been exploited by malicious actors prior to the fix. They indicated that it was plausible that bad actors could have minted fraudulent ZEC coins using the bug, thereby inflating the circulating supply. However, without a method to audit the total ZEC supply, confirming the absence of such counterfeiting was not possible. This uncertainty underscored the need for the Ironwood upgrade.

Upon its activation in late July, the Ironwood upgrade will introduce a “turnstile” mechanism intended to safeguard Zcash users against the potential threat of counterfeit coins. This upgrade will also signify the migration of ZEC from the existing Orchard pool to the new Ironwood pool. This transition will enable node operators to audit the total supply without relying on the developers.

Crucially, the Ironwood pool will utilize the same Orchard protocol but will commence with a clean slate. Users will no longer be able to send or receive payments on the old Orchard pool; all funds will be redirected to the new Ironwood pool. These operational changes are designed to be seamless for end-users.

A significant benefit of the Ironwood upgrade is its potential to reassure the Zcash community that no counterfeiting occurred before the Orchard bug was rectified. This assurance is expected to mitigate further sell-offs that could lead to substantial price declines, similar to the drop witnessed recently.

The news of the Zcash bug had a swift impact, with BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes reportedly selling his entire ZEC holdings shortly after the vulnerability became public. Hayes’ divestment intensified selling pressure on the asset, fueled by widespread fear, uncertainty, and doubt, which sent the coin plummeting from approximately $578 to near $255.

As developers continue their work to resolve the underlying issue, ZEC has experienced a notable rebound, gaining over 56% this week. At the time of reporting, the asset was trading above $470, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

XRP Sees Modest Gains Ahead of Network Upgrade

XRP is trading up approximately 3% as a significant technical upgrade to its underlying network looms, an event that could reshape its performance. The infrastructure enhancement is slated for June 15, and the market may begin to price in its potential impact imminently.

The XRP Ledger is preparing to activate version 3.2.0 of its core server software. Following this upgrade, server memory usage is anticipated to decrease by as much as 40%, leading to improved node efficiency and increased transaction throughput capacity.

The server software itself is undergoing a name change, from “rippled” to “xrpld,” a move that signifies the network’s growing independence from the company Ripple. Post-upgrade, node operators will see “xrpld 3.2.0” displayed on their command lines. Version 3.2.0 also includes bug fixes related to number handling and rounding logic, enhancing stability without altering the user interface.

    Current Market Snapshot

XRP is currently priced at $1.17, marking a 2.8% increase on the day with moderate trading volume. This uptick suggests mild buying interest but is not yet indicative of a sustained trend. On higher timeframes, the technical structure remains corrective, with XRP trading below key moving averages and momentum indicators still showing bearish sentiment.

    Short-Term Outlook

Analysts project XRP to trade within a $1.12 to $1.23 range over the next 24 hours, barring any new catalysts. Resistance is identified in clusters between $1.18 and $1.26, with a further level at $1.37. Support is found between $1.05 and $1.10, with $1.05 marked as the initial significant level where selling pressure could intensify.

    Potential Scenarios Post-Upgrade

Three scenarios are emerging as the June 15 upgrade approaches. In a positive scenario, the activation of version 3.2.0 could spark bullish sentiment, potentially amplified by ETF news, leading XRP to break through the $1.26 resistance and target the $1.37 to $1.50 zone.

Alternatively, XRP might consolidate within the $1.10 to $1.23 band, absorbing the upgrade’s impact without a significant breakout, pending broader market and regulatory clarity. The least favorable scenario would involve XRP falling below $1.05, decisively shifting the short-term structure to bearish and likely targeting the psychological $1.00 level.

    Long-Term Projections

Under a moderate adoption scenario, XRP is projected to reach $1.63 by the end of 2026. A more optimistic long-range model suggests XRP could approach $3.60 within five years, contingent on institutional adoption and favorable macroeconomic conditions. These figures underscore why traders seeking immediate, substantial gains might look to other opportunities.

    Risk-Reward Considerations

While XRP’s 2.8% daily gain is notable, its current resistance levels compress the risk-reward ratio for near-term trades. This does not preclude potential upward movement but suggests a tighter margin for profit compared to what headlines might imply.

    Emerging Opportunities in Early-Stage Markets

Traders seeking asymmetric exposure are reportedly exploring early-stage market segments where similar macroeconomic tailwinds can impact smaller market capitalizations more significantly.

    LiquidChain’s Layer 3 Ambitions

LiquidChain ($LIQUID), an emerging Layer 3 infrastructure project, is positioning itself as a cross-chain liquidity layer. The project aims to unify liquidity from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana into a single execution environment. Its architecture is built on four core principles: a Unified Liquidity Layer, Single-Step Execution, Verifiable Settlement, and a Deploy-Once Architecture, enabling developers to access multiple ecosystems without extensive re-coding.

The LiquidChain presale is currently underway, with tokens priced at $0.01468. To date, the project has raised approximately $830,000, indicating early traction.

XRP Ledger Set for Software Upgrade, Renaming Core Server

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is scheduled to activate version 3.2.0 of its core server software on June 15. While the update does not introduce significant new features for users, it incorporates several changes designed to enhance the network’s long-term operational efficiency.

A key change is the renaming of the server software from “rippled” to “xrpld.” This rebranding aims to better align with the broader XRPL ecosystem and mitigate potential confusion with other products associated with Ripple.

Following the upgrade, node operators will see “xrpld 3.2.0” displayed in their command line interfaces when checking software versions. Developers stated that this renaming reflects the increasing independence and technical maturity of the XRP Ledger’s infrastructure.

The release also promises substantial performance improvements across the network. According to developers, server memory usage could decrease by as much as 40%, enabling nodes to operate more efficiently, particularly under increased demand.

In addition to memory optimization, the update introduces system-wide refinements intended to boost overall network efficiency. These enhancements are also expected to support higher transaction throughput as activity grows in areas such as decentralized finance, tokenization, and real-world asset applications.

Version 3.2.0 also includes numerous bug fixes and technical refinements. Improvements to number handling, rounding logic, and core code maintenance are aimed at bolstering network stability without impacting the end-user experience.

This upcoming release follows the deployment of version 3.1.3 on the XRPL mainnet in late May. That earlier update addressed issues related to NFTs, Permissioned Domains, Vaults, the Lending Protocol, and Multi-Purpose Tokens.

Network data indicates that approximately 84% of XRPL nodes have already adopted version 3.1.3, suggesting the ecosystem is well-prepared for a smooth transition to the new software version.

Developers are urging validators and node operators to update their systems before the activation date. Servers that continue to run older versions may encounter limitations in fully participating in consensus and other network functions post-upgrade.

Beyond upgrade readiness, the release incorporates ongoing behind-the-scenes security enhancements. These include expanded AI-assisted testing and active bug bounty programs, part of broader initiatives to strengthen the ledger’s resilience as institutional and blockchain-based use cases continue to expand.

  • Zcash Plunges 50% on Old Secret; Recovery Underway

Zcash Plunges 50% on Old Secret; Recovery Underway

Zcash Completes Emergency Upgrade to Patch Four-Year-Old Critical Vulnerability

Zcash has successfully implemented a two-phase emergency network upgrade to address a critical vulnerability within its Orchard shielded pool. The flaw, which remained undetected for four years, theoretically could have allowed for the creation of unlimited, undetectable counterfeit ZEC. Its disclosure triggered a significant price collapse before the network’s rapid response began to restore confidence and drive a recovery in ZEC’s value.

    Developer Confirms Network Security

Josh Swihart, CEO of Electric Coin Company, the primary developer of Zcash, confirmed on X on June 7 that the fix was complete and the network was secure. His statement coincided with ZEC’s initial recovery from the lows experienced after the vulnerability was revealed.

The announcement came at a crucial juncture for the cryptocurrency. ZEC had plummeted approximately 50%, from a June 4 peak of $624 to $309 on June 5, erasing over $3 billion from its market capitalization, according to a timeline documented by the BitMEX Blog.

Discovery and Nature of the Zcash Bug

The vulnerability was identified on May 29, 2026, by security researcher Taylor Hornby during a protocol audit commissioned by Shielded Labs. Hornby pinpointed a “soundness” flaw in Zcash’s Orchard zero-knowledge proof circuit. Specifically, an under-constrained element within the Orchard Action circuit could have permitted invalid state transitions, posing a theoretical risk of double-spending within the shielded pool.

The discovery was made using Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 AI model in conjunction with a custom analysis suite, as detailed in Shielded Labs’ official disclosure. Hornby and the AI developed a functional proof-of-concept that successfully generated unlimited, entirely undetectable counterfeit ZEC in a local test environment. An independent analyst described it as “about the worst kind of bug a cryptocurrency can have,” according to Yahoo Finance’s reporting on the disclosure.

Crucially, the flaw did not enable inflation of the total ZEC supply on the live network. Zcash’s internal accounting mechanism, which monitors the total value entering and exiting the shielded pool, confirmed that no unauthorized value creation occurred while the flaw was active, according to Shielded Labs’ official statement. However, the organization acknowledged that due to the privacy features of Orchard and the nature of the bug, there is no definitive cryptographic method to ascertain whether exploitation had occurred. This inherent limitation of the shielded pool’s design became a source of market concern. The vulnerability had been present since Orchard’s activation in May 2022, a period of four years, without detection.

    The Emergency Response

Zcash’s development ecosystem responded with remarkable speed. The first phase involved an emergency soft fork, deployed via Zebra 4.5.3 and activated at block 3,363,426 on June 2. This measure temporarily disabled all Orchard transactions, effectively removing the attack vector while developers prepared the permanent solution. Transparent and Sapling transactions continued to operate without interruption, as announced by the Zcash Foundation on X.

The second phase was implemented on June 3 through the NU6.2 hard fork, activated at block 3,364,600 via Zebra 5.0.0. This upgrade introduced a corrected circuit and a new verifying key, patching the flaw and re-enabling Orchard transactions, according to the Foundation.

The market’s initial reaction to the hard fork was positive. ZEC saw an increase from $544 on June 2 to $603 on June 3, reaching $624 on June 4, its highest point since the rally began. Subsequently, Arthur Hayes publicly announced his exit from his entire ZEC position on June 4, the same day as the price peak. He cited five macroeconomic factors, including rising energy prices and upcoming AI IPOs, in an X post that was covered in prior reporting. The combination of Hayes’ departure and lingering uncertainty about potential exploitation prior to the patch led to ZEC’s drop to $309 on June 5.

    The Recovery and Its Implications

Swihart’s X post on June 7, which reassured the community that the total ZEC supply remained intact and that the network had navigated the emergency without confirmed exploitation, appears to have catalyzed the ongoing recovery. The swift two-phase response, coupled with the Foundation’s transparent disclosure and Swihart’s direct communication, provided the market with the necessary confidence signal.

This development represents a pivotal and challenging moment for Zcash’s long-term standing in the nascent cryptocurrency sector. A four-year-old vulnerability in the Orchard pool—the very component central to ZEC’s core privacy value proposition—has been successfully patched without confirmed exploitation.

However, the inherent irony that the privacy features making Zcash valuable also make it impossible to definitively confirm whether the vulnerability was ever exploited will likely remain a point of discussion for the community as the recovery progresses. As of this writing, ZEC is trading around $430, showing a recovery from its June 5 lows as confidence in the network’s security response gradually rebuilds.

Pi Network Plunges 12% Weekly; Recovery Triggers Eyed

Crypto Market Sees Modest Gains, Pi Network Struggles

The cryptocurrency market experienced a slight but noticeable recovery over the past 24 hours, with most major digital assets showing upward movement. However, Pi Network’s native token, PI, continues to trade in negative territory, facing persistent downward pressure.

One analyst suggests a potential turnaround could be on the horizon, identifying a key factor that might spark a rebound for the embattled token.

Last week, PI briefly dipped below $0.12, marking its lowest point since its inception. While it has since recovered some of those losses, the token is currently trading just under $0.13. This represents a 12% decline over the past week and a dramatic 96% drop from its all-time high recorded in February 2025.

X user Erick Crypto ₿ observed that PI’s price has attempted to stabilize following an extended downtrend. He noted that trading volume remains low, indicating that “confirmation is still needed.”

The analyst also pointed out that PI’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) has approached oversold levels. This suggests that the token’s valuation has fallen too rapidly, potentially setting the stage for a recovery. The analyst concluded that the future trajectory now depends on buyer behavior: “If buyers step in, we could see a recovery move from these depressed levels. However, risk management remains essential until a clear trend reversal appears.”

Despite these price struggles, the Pi Network team has recently achieved several significant milestones and released multiple announcements concerning the ongoing development of the project’s ecosystem.

Most recently, the team announced the successful transition to protocol v24. This upgrade is primarily designed to enhance the underlying infrastructure supporting node operations and mainnet activity. The Core Team has indicated that the migration to v25 is the next item on the roadmap, with a deadline set for June 18.

Prior to this, CiDi Games, a company within the Pi Network Ventures portfolio, introduced four new games for “Pioneers”: Coin Whack, Fruit Stack, Gemnova, and RainbowCubes.

These developments have so far failed to catalyze a price recovery for PI. The community’s attention has now shifted to June 28, a date known as Pi2Day. Some users on X are speculating about potential announcements, ecosystem updates, or new features that might be unveiled on this day. However, no official confirmations have been made, and it remains uncertain whether these expectations will be met or if they will have any impact on PI’s valuation.

Zcash Surges $2.5 Billion on Supply Fix Hopes

Zcash Recovers as Founder Proposes Upgrade to Restore Scarcity Confidence

Zcash has staged a weekend recovery after its founder, Zooko Wilcox, unveiled a proposal for an upgrade designed to restore confidence in the digital asset’s scarcity.

The price of Zcash (ZEC) had plummeted late last week following disclosures by Shielded Labs, an organization dedicated to supporting the privacy coin’s development. The group revealed a critical bug that, prior to its patching, could have allowed for the creation of an unlimited number of counterfeit tokens.

Shielded Labs noted at the time that Zcash’s inherent privacy features made it impossible to definitively determine, using cryptography alone, whether the vulnerability had been exploited. However, the proposal introduced on Friday details changes for an “Ironwood” upgrade that aims to alleviate these concerns.

“Ironwood would allow users to verify that the circulating supply of Zcash is correct,” Wilcox stated in an X post. “Users would gain this ability immediately upon the activation of Ironwood, by simply summing up the balances of the active pools.”

Following a significant drop in its market capitalization to $5 billion on Friday, Zcash’s total market value has since rebounded to nearly $7.5 billion. Despite this increase, Zcash’s market cap remains approximately 30% below its Friday peak of $10.48 billion, according to data from CoinGecko.

The token’s sharp decline had a ripple effect on other privacy coins. NEAR Protocol, for instance, saw a rally of more than 8% to $2.15 over a 24-hour period. Zcash itself experienced a 6% rise, reaching around $445.

    Ironwood Upgrade Details

The Ironwood upgrade is set to focus on several key areas. It will introduce a new mechanism for users to hold their Zcash in a shielded form, implement restrictions on transactions that could potentially involve counterfeit coins, and leverage advanced techniques such as AI-assisted security auditing to bolster the robustness of Zcash’s codebase.

Wilcox’s post indicated that the timeline for the upgrade is not yet finalized, with a clearer understanding expected “as implementation plans mature and discussions continue.” The post also reiterated confidence that the vulnerability was never exploited.

According to the post, Shielded Labs’ efforts involve collaboration with the Zcash Foundation, Tachyon Group, Valar Group, and the Zcash Open Development Lab. Shortly after the proposal was made public, prominent advocates for the privacy coin expressed strong support for the upgrade.

“I’m extremely bullish,” Mert Mumtaz, CEO and co-founder of Solana infrastructure firm Helius Labs, told Decrypt, characterizing the upgrade’s scope as an ambitious response. “Crypto is volatile.”

Mumtaz, who has become one of Zcash’s most vocal supporters over the past year, emphasized that the upgrade is anticipated to address a fundamental trade-off inherent in privacy coins. Crucially, he added, it incorporates new transaction logic designed to prevent similar bugs from emerging in the future.

Despite the recent turbulence, Mumtaz downplayed the significance of Zcash’s plunge, stating that such market movements are common in the cryptocurrency space. He attributed Friday’s losses partly to “massive hysteria” and broader headwinds from Wall Street, noting that the Nasdaq also experienced its largest one-day point drop.
