The Winklevoss twins have donated Bitcoin worth $21 million to a political action committee supporting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, highlighting the Gemini co-founders’ strong commitment to the future of cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin and the National Debt
This donation follows a recent statement from Cameron Winklevoss, who took to X on May 22 to assert that there are “39 trillion reasons to buy Bitcoin.” He was referring to the U.S. national debt, which has surpassed $39 trillion.
Bitcoin as a Hedge
Cameron and his brother Tyler have long maintained that Bitcoin’s fixed supply of 21 million coins makes it a natural hedge against government overspending. They view Bitcoin as “gold 2.0” and believe its price could reach $1 million if it replaces gold as the world’s primary store of value.
Cameron has previously identified what he considered opportune buying moments. When Bitcoin fell below $90,000 late last year, he advised his over 700,000 X followers that it was a final opportunity to buy before a rebound. However, Bitcoin subsequently declined further and currently trades around $74,000.
Growing Support for the Debt Argument
Cameron is not alone in linking the national debt to the case for Bitcoin. Last year, Jim Cramer encouraged Americans to consider cryptocurrencies as the debt reached $37.63 trillion. Michael Saylor and Anthony Pompliano have also repeatedly presented Bitcoin as a safeguard against economic instability and escalating government debt. The core argument is that as government debt increases and the purchasing power of fiat currencies decreases, an asset with a fixed supply becomes increasingly attractive.
Interests Aligned
Gemini is a cryptocurrency exchange, and the Winklevoss brothers have built their business on Bitcoin adoption. Their advocacy and financial interests are aligned. Cameron’s recent post contributes to the narrative the crypto industry has been building for years: that the national debt is not only an economic issue but also a compelling reason to invest in Bitcoin.
