Trade.xyz to Cover Losses from SK Hynix Liquidation Anomaly on Hyperliquid

Trade.xyz has announced it will cover liquidation losses stemming from a sudden collapse of its SK Hynix perpetual contract on July 27. The incident impacted nearly 1,000 leveraged positions on the Hyperliquid platform.

Price Drop Triggers Mass Liquidations

The mark price for the SK Hynix contract plummeted from $1,127.90 to $917.25, initiating a significant liquidation cascade. Preliminary analysis indicates this resulted in approximately $57 million in liquidations and $17.3 million in realized losses.

Oracle Performance Under Scrutiny

The team behind Hyperliquid’s HIP-3 operator explained that the price drop originated from a transaction executed on what they described as the main Korean pre-market venue. Multiple independent data providers relayed this trade, and the platform’s oracle was tracking the external venue.

According to Trade.xyz, the oracle functioned as per its existing specifications. However, the resulting mark price triggered liquidations before the underlying market recovered from the isolated price print. The extreme price movement occurred on July 27 at 23:01 UTC.

Reimbursement and Future Measures

Trade.xyz stated it will reimburse liquidation losses attributed to this anomaly. The platform plans to announce eligibility criteria shortly and anticipates completing distributions within the coming days.

The company characterized the compensation as a one-time discretionary measure, emphasizing that this decision does not set a precedent for reimbursements in similar future incidents. The announcement also acknowledged the immediate financial impact on traders but clarified it does not alter the automatic closure of leveraged positions when the oracle price fell.

Furthermore, Trade.xyz intends to bolster its pricing systems to mitigate the impact of comparable tail events. This review will examine the platform’s reliance on external venues and the assumptions used in constructing mark prices. The team also indicated they are considering giving greater weight to activity on their own order books.
