Bitcoin and Ethereum Show July Gains, Outperforming Traditional Assets Amidst Historical August Concerns

Bitcoin and Ethereum concluded July with significant gains, outperforming key traditional asset classes including chip stocks, the Nasdaq 100, and the S&P 500. This performance marks a recovery for the two largest cryptocurrencies after a challenging first half of the year, though historical data indicates August has often been a difficult month for Bitcoin.

In July, Bitcoin saw an increase of 7.37%, while Ethereum experienced a more substantial gain of 19.5%. This contrasts sharply with the performance of other markets. A comparison by analyst Ash Crypto showed chip stocks fell by 22% during the same period. The Nasdaq 100 declined by 9%, and the Russell 2000 dropped by 3%. The S&P 500 also registered a loss, albeit smaller, of approximately 1%. Precious metals showed mixed results, with Silver declining by 2.64% and Gold adding a modest 0.38%.

This July rally is particularly noteworthy given the difficult preceding months for both cryptocurrencies. Data from CoinGlass indicates that Bitcoin experienced losses exceeding 10% in January and nearly 15% in February. May saw a return of -3.41%, followed by a significant drop of over 20% in June. Ethereum’s performance was similarly challenging, with first-quarter returns at -21.26% and second-quarter returns at -25.28%.

Bitcoin began July trading near $58,000 and reached a monthly high close to $67,000 in the final week before experiencing some cooling. Ethereum started the month around $1,500 and finished near $2,000. At the time of writing, Ethereum was trading just above $1,900, having shed about 1% in the preceding seven days. Despite the positive July, Ethereum remains over 50% lower than its value a year ago and approximately 61% below its all-time high. Bitcoin was trading near $64,000, roughly half of its all-time high, following the Federal Reserve’s decision to maintain current interest rates.

Despite the recent positive momentum, historical patterns suggest caution for August. Data from CoinGlass shows that every August since 2022 has resulted in a monthly loss for Bitcoin. These losses have included 6.49% in August 2025, 8.6% in August 2024, 11.29% in August 2023, and 13.88% in August 2022.

This historical context has coincided with divided opinions among analysts regarding the immediate future. Ali Martinez forecasting that Bitcoin’s bear market could extend until October. Traders Pepesso and Crypto Lens expect a further decline before a broader recovery potentially begins in 2027. The current market environment presents a period of recovery for crypto investors, but the recurring seasonal trends and differing analyst outlooks highlight ongoing uncertainties.

Why This Matters

The performance of Bitcoin and Ethereum in July, outperforming major asset classes like chip stocks and the Nasdaq 100, offers a temporary reprieve for crypto investors after a difficult first half of the year. However, historical data suggests August has been a challenging month for Bitcoin, and the future market direction remains uncertain, with analysts offering divided outlooks.

Broader Context

Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) look set to finish July ahead of most major asset classes, with the former adding over 7% and the latter gaining almost 20% in the last 30 days. This performance adds to a month of recovery for the two largest cryptocurrencies after a difficult first half of the year. However, historical data suggests August has been a much tougher month for BTC. At the time of writing, Ethereum was trading just above $1,900, having shed about 1% in the last seven days, and Bitcoin settled near $64,000. The Fed decided to keep interest rates unchanged.
