Bitcoin Nears Historic Capitulation Zone at $38.4K Amid Shifting Dynamics

Bitcoin experienced a significant surge in August, climbing by nearly 30%. While some analysts believe the bear market may have concluded, others caution that the world’s largest cryptocurrency could still face a substantial downturn.

According to Joao Wedson, founder of Alphractal, Bitcoin’s “Balanced Price” currently hovers around $38,400. However, he noted that historical price movements do not guarantee a return to this level.

The Balanced Price metric has proven effective in identifying major cycle bottoms for cryptocurrencies. Historically, the time elapsed between significant interactions with this zone has progressively lengthened, increasing from 732 days to 1,120, then 1,200, and most recently 1,420 days.

In the current cycle, Bitcoin has spent approximately 1,400 days since its last engagement with the Balanced Price. Concurrently, the duration Bitcoin spends trading below this metric has been shrinking. Earlier cycles saw prices remain below the Balanced Price for weeks, later reducing to around 20 days, and in 2022, the asset spent virtually only one day below this valuation.

The Balanced Price, currently near $38,400, is calculated by adjusting Bitcoin’s aggregate market cost basis with the long-term spending patterns of older coins. This creates a valuation zone that has historically coincided with periods of extreme capitulation. While this does not necessitate a return to $38,000, Wedson’s analysis suggests the possibility that Bitcoin could deviate from its historical pattern and not revisit this zone. Should the pattern persist, however, the $40,000 region might still represent a potential on-chain capitulation target.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin investors are growing increasingly optimistic that the market has already found its bottom. Wedson observed that “Very Bullish” sentiment is now prevalent on social media, a conviction far stronger than the uncertainty witnessed following the market lows of late 2022 and early 2023. However, such widespread optimism could itself pose a risk, particularly if bullish traders are caught unprepared by another sharp decline. In such a scenario, forced liquidations among optimistic investors could trigger a fresh wave of selling pressure.

One trader, who goes by the name Killa, anticipates the cryptocurrency will reach a new all-time high in the fourth quarter of next year and projects it could trade above $126,000 by November 2027. Killa argues that Bitcoin’s market cycles are shortening, enabling it to achieve new all-time highs more rapidly with each cycle. Based on the 2022 cycle alone, he estimates that Bitcoin should establish a new all-time high no later than February 2028. However, Killa also claimed that the current cycle is accelerating, having bottomed approximately three to four months earlier, which could bring the timeline forward.
