Altcoins Gain Momentum as Bitcoin’s Dominance Wanes
For much of the current market cycle, Bitcoin has acted as the undisputed leader in the cryptocurrency space, with all other assets playing a supporting role. However, according to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, this dynamic has begun to shift subtly since late August, with smaller and mid-cap cryptocurrencies showing a notable acceleration in growth.
In an analysis shared on October 18, 2026, Darkfost reported that crypto assets in the small and mid-cap categories have outpaced Bitcoin in market capitalization growth over the recent period. Furthermore, these smaller assets have also surpassed the performance of large-cap cryptocurrencies, which typically follow Bitcoin’s lead. Darkfost described this emerging pattern as “fairly unusual.”
The metric employed by Darkfost compares the monthly average market capitalization of each segment against its annual average. A significant divergence where the monthly figure substantially exceeds the annual one indicates that a particular segment is experiencing growth rates hotter than its own long-term norm. This approach measures momentum relative to a segment’s historical performance rather than its absolute size.
Based on this methodology, small and mid-cap assets demonstrated a 41% increase in their ratio since late August. In contrast, Bitcoin’s ratio saw a more modest rise of 7% over the same timeframe.
Large-cap assets, representing the established cryptocurrencies ranked below Bitcoin, recorded a growth of only 3.5%. This suggests that the largest non-Bitcoin assets are currently lagging behind both the market leader and the smaller tokens.
The findings quickly gained traction following Darkfost’s publication. Media outlets such as Cointelegraph and KuCoin reported on the analysis shortly after its release, contributing to a broader discussion about a potential shift in market momentum.
Historically, cryptocurrency market recoveries have been characterized by Bitcoin taking the lead. Capital typically flows into the largest and most liquid asset first, a pattern that was particularly evident following the 2023 bear market. Darkfost’s observation deviates from this established trend.
Darkfost accompanied his analysis with a cautionary note, emphasizing the heightened sensitivity of smaller-cap assets to fluctuations in market sentiment and capital flows. He warned that this trend is susceptible to rapid reversals.
The movement of capital towards smaller assets often signifies an increasing appetite for risk among market participants. The 41% momentum reading for small and mid-caps suggests that, at least since late August, a greater number of traders have been willing to explore assets beyond Bitcoin.
The subdued performance of large-cap assets is arguably as significant as the strength shown by smaller names. The 3.5% ratio increase, trailing Bitcoin’s 7%, indicates that the segment typically positioned between Bitcoin and the broader market of smaller tokens is facing pressure from both sides.
It is important to note that Darkfost’s data covers a period beginning in late August, which is relatively short by market cycle standards. While the comparison against annual averages helps to mitigate some of the short-term noise, it does not guarantee the sustainability of this momentum. This is particularly true given Darkfost’s own caveat regarding the speed at which sentiment-driven market movements can unwind.
