Bitcoin Treasuries Reclaim Profitability Above $80K

Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000, Boosting Corporate Holders into Profitability

Bitcoin’s recent climb back above the $80,000 mark has brought a welcome turnaround for public companies holding the cryptocurrency as a primary reserve asset. These firms now collectively report unrealized gains of approximately $10.2 billion, representing an 11.1% increase.

Corporate Bitcoin Holdings Rebound

The price recovery, which gained momentum in mid-to-late October 2026, has pulled the corporate Bitcoin trade out of the red territory it occupied earlier in the year. Across 172 publicly traded companies tracked, their combined Bitcoin holdings amount to roughly 1.27 million BTC, a significant stash accounting for about 6% of Bitcoin’s total supply. As of late October 2026, this portfolio was valued at approximately $107 billion.

Cost Basis and Profitability

Detailed cost data is available for 101 of these 172 companies. These firms collectively invested approximately $92.6 billion to acquire their Bitcoin, which is now valued higher than their initial outlay. The average cost basis across this group stands near $76,300 per BTC. While Bitcoin trading above $80,000 provides a cushion, it is not substantial.

Strategy Leads the Pack

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, continues to dominate the corporate Bitcoin holding landscape by a considerable margin. The company holds approximately 848,500 BTC, equating to roughly 4% of all Bitcoin that will ever be mined. This means Strategy alone possesses about two-thirds of the Bitcoin held by all 172 tracked public firms combined.

Strategy’s average cost basis is approximately $76,084 per coin, resulting in an unrealized gain of about 11.4% at current prices. The company has historically relied heavily on equity sales to finance its Bitcoin acquisitions, issuing stock and reinvesting the proceeds. However, recent activity suggests a shift towards more selective, tactical trading rather than continuous large-scale accumulation.

Mixed Fortunes Among Holders

Not all corporate Bitcoin holders are experiencing the same level of success. Metaplanet, for instance, holds approximately 44,000 BTC at an average cost of $88,551, leaving it still “underwater” despite Bitcoin’s price surpassing $80,000.

On the other end of the spectrum, MARA Holdings has approximately 35,600 BTC, showing an unrealized gain of about 18%. This positions MARA Holdings as one of the more favorably situated large-scale corporate Bitcoin owners.

Market Dynamics and Future Outlook

The anticipated surge in new corporate Bitcoin buying has yet to materialize, with companies opting for tactical adjustments to their holdings rather than broad-scale accumulation. The stock market’s reaction to these treasury firms has also been varied. Some trade at a premium to their Bitcoin net asset value, allowing them to issue shares and acquire more Bitcoin per share, effectively expanding their holdings. Others trade at a discount, where raising capital to buy more coins can dilute existing shareholders.

Corporate treasuries have been a significant source of Bitcoin demand. With 172 companies holding around 6% of the total supply, their collective sentiment can notably influence market dynamics. For investors in these treasury stocks, the cost basis is now a critical factor. Companies like Strategy and MARA possess financial flexibility, while Metaplanet requires further price appreciation to achieve profitability.

Strategy’s current approach to its holdings likely serves as a key indicator for the broader group. If the largest and most committed corporate buyer is engaging in tactical trading instead of aggressive accumulation, smaller firms with tighter margins may have even less incentive to pursue bold acquisition strategies.
