Aave Unfreezes V3/V4 Markets After Binance Hack Pause

Aave Unfreezes Markets After Binance Hack, Restricts Collateral for Nine Assets

Decentralized lending protocol Aave announced on the evening of October 30th, Taipei time, that its V3 and V4 markets have been fully unfrozen. The protocol had previously implemented a precautionary freeze on these markets following a significant exploit of Binance’s hot wallet. While Aave’s smart contracts were confirmed to be unaffected by the incident, nine assets, including USDT and USDC, will temporarily have their Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio set to zero, preventing them from being used as collateral for new loans.

Background of the Freeze

Aave initiated the precautionary freeze on its V3 and V4 markets shortly after news broke of a large-scale transfer from Binance’s hot wallet. The protocol’s initial response was to halt new deposits and borrowings, while allowing existing users to continue withdrawing and repaying funds. Aave emphasized at the time that its core smart contracts remained secure and that user positions were adequately collateralized.

Binance confirmed the hot wallet breach, with preliminary investigations suggesting the intrusion may have originated from an engineer’s laptop. The exchange estimated the total loss to be around $6.3 billion and pledged to cover the losses using company funds and its SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) insurance. The exploit saw hackers deposit stablecoins into Aave to borrow Ether, making the lending market one of the avenues for the illicit funds, which directly prompted Aave’s emergency market freeze.

Market Unfrozen, Collateral Restrictions Remain

Aave stated that the freeze was a preventative measure taken in response to initial reports, aimed at pausing new lending and borrowing activities while ensuring existing users could still manage their positions. As the situation became clearer, the V3 and V4 markets have now been fully unfrozen, with new deposits and borrowings once again permitted.

The protocol reiterated that its smart contracts were not compromised by the Binance incident and that all positions remain over-collateralized, meaning the value of collateral exceeds the value of outstanding loans.

As a continued precautionary measure, nine assets – USDT, USDC, USDT0, POL, WAVAX, sAVAX, XAUT, PAXG, and OP – will have their LTV ratio temporarily set to zero. This means these assets can no longer be used as collateral to secure new loans.

This measure does not signify a renewed market freeze but rather a reduction in the collateral eligibility for specific assets. Existing positions and withdrawal/repayment functionalities will continue to operate under the protocol’s rules. However, users attempting to leverage these nine assets or open new loans with them will be temporarily blocked.

Implications for Users

The unfreezing of Aave’s markets has restored normal access for most of the protocol. However, the LTV=0 restriction on stablecoins and certain on-chain assets will continue to limit new leverage. Strategies that relied on USDT or USDC as collateral will need to adapt by using alternative eligible collateral, repaying existing loans, or adjusting their positions in the short term.

Amidst the ongoing fallout from the Binance incident, Aave has adopted a strategy of “open markets, strict collateral,” prioritizing the restoration of liquidity while maintaining tighter risk controls on assets issued by entities that are controllable or have experienced recent volatility.
