Trump-Backed WLFI Launches Buyback After 73% Crash

World Liberty Financial Launches Token Buyback Amid Significant Price Decline

World Liberty Financial (WLF), a cryptocurrency venture associated with the Trump family, has initiated a formal buyback program for its WLFI governance token. This move follows a substantial decline in the token’s value, which has fallen more than 73% since its post-election slump.

Details of the Buyback Plan

Announced on November 6, the buyback program aims to utilize revenue generated from World Liberty Financial’s ecosystem, including fees collected from reserves backing its USD1 stablecoin, to repurchase WLFI tokens. The company has not yet disclosed the specific amount of funds allocated for the buybacks or the commencement date for these purchases.

Beyond reducing the circulating supply of WLFI, the program is intended to foster greater engagement in WLFI governance and concentrate voting power among long-term token holders. World Liberty Financial has emphasized that this is a sustained, long-term initiative rather than a singular event. This distinction is significant given that only approximately 32% of the total 100 billion WLFI token supply is currently in circulation.

The Trump family holds an estimated 38% stake in the company behind the project, which encompasses its cryptocurrency interests, including WLFI and the USD1 stablecoin. A statement from the company indicated that the success of the USD1 stablecoin and the expansion of the WLFI ecosystem are key drivers for launching this buyback program to bolster the WLFI ecosystem and its governance structure.

Market Context and Broader Trends

The timing of this announcement coincides with a significant sell-off in tokens linked to the Trump family, which occurred in the wake of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, where Democrats achieved considerable gains.

WLFI experienced an immediate drop of approximately 10% on election night, exacerbating an already challenging year for the token. From its peak of $0.1744 in November 2025, WLFI has depreciated by over 73%, currently trading around $0.047.

This downturn is not isolated to WLFI. The Official Trump (TRUMP) token has seen a decline of roughly 85% over the past year, while the Melania Meme (MELANIA) token has dropped approximately 41% this year.

The buyback initiative also comes as Democrats prepare to assume leadership of key congressional committees in January. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is expected to chair the Senate Banking Committee, has previously expressed criticism of Trump-linked crypto businesses and may pursue investigations into the Trump family’s decentralized finance operations, international capital connections, and banking endeavors.
