Bitcoin Surges to Weekly Peak Amid Crypto Market Rally

Bitcoin Traders Find Relief as Market Recovers from Mid-Month Slump

Bitcoin traders and long-term holders are experiencing a welcome reprieve this week, following a concerning start to the month that had cast a shadow over historically strong performance periods.

On Wednesday, Bitcoin was trading near $84,500, marking a 2.5% increase over the preceding 24 hours. This rebound comes after a mid-October downturn that saw the cryptocurrency dip below the $80,000 mark. The broader cryptocurrency market capitalization, representing the total value of all digital assets, also saw a recovery, climbing 2.2% to $2.9 trillion.

Other major cryptocurrencies also posted gains. Ethereum rose 2.5% to $2,504, Solana gained 2.2% to $108.18, and BNB was up 2% to $749. Among larger-cap altcoins, XRP led the pack with a 4.1% increase to $1.37. Zcash saw a more significant surge, jumping 11.2% to $1,332 and accumulating a 15.3% gain over the past seven days.

Market Sentiment Shifts

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, a sentiment gauge ranging from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed), currently stands at 55. While this is considered neutral, it represents a 3-point increase from the previous day, suggesting that panic among traders has subsided, though a full-blown speculative frenzy has yet to emerge.

Geopolitical Factors and Inflationary Pressures

The price of Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, has fluctuated between $97 and $112 per barrel this month, trading near $108 on Wednesday. Ongoing supply concerns, exacerbated by the conflict with Iran and Washington’s rejection of a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in late September, continue to influence oil prices.

Higher oil prices have implications for the cryptocurrency market as they can contribute to inflation. U.S. consumer prices rose 3.7% in September year-over-year, exceeding economists’ expectations of 3.6% and up from 3.4% in August. Rising inflation typically leads to increased Treasury yields, making government bonds more attractive to investors. Higher yields on low-risk assets like U.S. government bonds can draw capital away from riskier investments such as stocks and cryptocurrencies. Additionally, elevated interest rates increase the cost of borrowing for leveraged trading strategies.

Federal Reserve Policy and Interest Rate Outlook

The Federal Reserve’s benchmark interest rate currently sits between 3.75% and 4% following a September increase. Market participants, as indicated by CME FedWatch, anticipate an approximately 80% chance of the Fed holding rates steady at its October 28 meeting. However, a rate hike is widely expected on December 9.

Bitcoin’s Technical Landscape

On the daily chart, Bitcoin opened Wednesday at $82,928.80 and reached a high of $84,726.28, a 1.94% increase for the trading session. This movement represents a roughly 6% recovery from the month’s low of approximately $79,711. The cryptocurrency is currently testing resistance levels around $87,422.70.

Bitcoin’s recent rally, which began at $62,763 and peaked at $87,422.70 in September, established a strong support level at $81,603. After losing this level during the October dip, Bitcoin has now reclaimed it and is trading above it.

Technical indicators suggest a positive trend. The 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) is positioned near $80,782, above the 200-day moving average of approximately $76,084. This configuration, with the shorter-term average above the longer-term one, is a standard indicator of an uptrend. Bitcoin is currently trading 4.6% above its 50-day EMA.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI), which measures the magnitude of recent price changes to evaluate overbought or oversold conditions, stands at 58.5. Readings above 50 indicate bullish momentum, with 70 representing overbought territory. The current RSI suggests that while momentum is building, it has not yet reached stretched levels.

Potential Price Targets and Scenarios

A bullish outlook for Bitcoin would be solidified by a daily close above Wednesday’s high of $84,726, ideally accompanied by the Average Directional Index (ADX)—a measure of trend strength—climbing back above 25. Such a move could target approximately $86,090, followed by the September high of $87,422.70.

Traders on Myriad, a prediction market operated by Dastan, the parent company of Decrypt, have lowered the probability of Bitcoin reaching $87,500 in October to 31%, down from 45% on October 12. A price target of $90,000 is currently priced at 18%.

Conversely, a failure to sustain levels above $84,726 could see Bitcoin remain within the range of roughly $79,700 to $87,400, which has been in place since late September. This scenario would likely be associated with an ADX below 20.

A bearish scenario would commence with a daily close below the $81,603 support level. This could lead to declines towards the 50-day EMA at $80,782, followed by the October low near $79,711, and ultimately the 200-day EMA at $76,084.
