Vantage and Rio Bank Settle Loan with Tokenized Ethereum Deposits

Landmark Interbank Payment Achieved with Tokenized Deposits on Ethereum

Two relatively unknown Texas-based banks, Vantage Bank and Rio Bank, have successfully executed a loan payment using tokenized deposits on the Ethereum blockchain, a feat that many larger financial institutions are still exploring in theory. The transaction, facilitated by the platform Participate, saw principal and interest funds arrive in the recipient bank’s digital wallet in under three minutes. Crucially, loan balances and payment notifications were updated simultaneously with the fund transfer.

The groundbreaking transaction occurred on October 19, 2026, and has been hailed as the world’s first interbank loan participation or syndication principal-and-interest payment conducted with tokenized deposits. In a loan participation arrangement, a lead bank originates a loan and then sells portions of it to other banks. When the borrower repays, the lead bank is responsible for distributing each participant’s share of the principal and interest.

Integrated Infrastructure Powers the Transaction

This payment leveraged two key technological components. The first was Participate’s loan-sales platform, designed to connect banks engaged in buying and selling loan interests. The second was the Hazel Network, a system developed by Vantage Bank in collaboration with Custodia Bank. The actual settlement took place on the Ethereum mainnet, the public and widely accessible blockchain, rather than a private or test environment.

Custodia Bank’s ERC-20 token, named Avit, played a role in the process. ERC-20 is the established standard for fungible tokens on Ethereum, forming the basis for a significant portion of tokens issued on the network.

A Practical Step Towards Automation

Matt Johnner of Participate characterized the payment as a tangible demonstration of how tokenized deposits can be integrated into existing banking workflows. He emphasized its significance as a crucial advancement toward automating interbank loan servicing.

This development did not emerge overnight. Vantage Bank and Custodia Bank had been actively testing tokenized deposits since March 2025, accumulating approximately 18 months of trial runs before this live payment. The most recent phase of this initiative began in April 2026, when Participate, Vantage Bank, and Custodia Bank announced a strategic partnership to integrate Hazel Network’s capabilities into Participate’s broader ecosystem. This ecosystem currently comprises over 750 banks, suggesting the underlying infrastructure has the potential to reach a substantial number of counterparties.

Understanding Tokenized Deposits

A tokenized deposit is essentially a conventional bank deposit that is represented as a token on a blockchain. It continues to function as a claim on the issuing bank and remains within the regulated banking system.

While the three-minute settlement time is a headline figure, the simultaneous updating of records is considered a more significant innovation. In loan servicing, the efficient movement of funds is only part of the process; updating balances, issuing notifications, and confirming ownership are equally critical. The ability to bundle these actions into a single on-chain event encapsulates the core efficiency argument for tokenization. The participating institutions also affirmed that the transaction adhered to all banking compliance requirements.

Public Blockchain Choice Signals Confidence

For the cryptocurrency sector, the decision to utilize the Ethereum mainnet is noteworthy. Traditional financial institutions have often favored permissioned networks, where participation is controlled. Conducting a regulated interbank payment on a public blockchain suggests a growing confidence in its reliability for such applications.

Custodia Bank’s involvement is also significant. The Wyoming-chartered bank has consistently positioned itself at the nexus of cryptocurrency and traditional finance. This live interbank payment, utilizing its Avit token, provides a concrete use case that moves beyond theoretical proposals.

Wider adoption of this technology will necessitate a greater number of banks willing to hold tokenized deposits, connect to the Hazel Network, and become comfortable with on-chain settlement from both risk and compliance perspectives. Interoperability between different tokenized deposit systems will also be a critical factor to monitor, as the full benefits of near-instant settlement depend on the ability of these systems to communicate effectively.
