KBC Group Boosts Stake in Bitcoin Treasury Firm Strategy
Belgian banking giant KBC Group has significantly increased its holdings in Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy, acquiring an additional 39,826 shares valued at approximately $5.9 million. This latest purchase, disclosed via a public 13F filing, underscores KBC’s growing exposure to the digital asset space.
Expanding Holdings
The new shares bring KBC’s total stake in Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) to 311,624 shares, a position valued at roughly $50.44 million as of the end of 2025. The bank had already made a substantial addition in the fourth quarter of 2025, purchasing 88,501 shares within that three-month period. The most recent acquisition, dated October 23, 2026, continues this pattern of aggressive accumulation.
Strategy rebranded in February 2025 to emphasize its core business of holding Bitcoin. The firm is led by CEO Phong Le, with co-founder Michael Saylor remaining an influential figure. As of October 19, 2026, Strategy held 848,517 BTC, acquired at an average cost of approximately $75,446 per Bitcoin.
Dual Approach to Digital Assets
For a regulated entity like KBC, investing in a Nasdaq-listed company like Strategy offers a more straightforward path to gaining exposure to Bitcoin compared to holding the underlying cryptocurrency directly. This approach aligns with existing custody, compliance, and reporting infrastructure.
Simultaneously, KBC is preparing to offer its retail customers direct trading access to Bitcoin and Ether through its Bolero investment platform. This initiative will operate under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR). This dual strategy allows KBC to build equity exposure via Strategy on its own balance sheet while facilitating direct client access to major cryptocurrencies.
Navigating Risks
However, this strategy carries inherent risks. Concentrating institutional exposure within a single treasury company means investors are tied not only to the performance of Bitcoin but also to the leverage and capital decisions of that specific company.
Investors will be closely watching KBC’s future filings to see if the quarterly share purchases continue, as well as the anticipated launch date of the Bolero platform. Strategy’s own announcements regarding its Bitcoin holdings are also critical, as this stockpile represents the ultimate asset that investors like KBC are seeking exposure to.
