Fable 5, Anthropic’s controversial AI model, appears poised for a comeback, and this time, it may be included as part of standard subscription plans rather than requiring separate purchases.
Hints Emerge in Code Updates
New strings discovered within Claude Code version 2.1.190 suggest preparations for Fable 5’s return, with indications that weekly usage will be integrated directly into subscription tiers. A key phrase identified is: “You’ve used your Fable 5 usage for this week.”
This discovery, first reported by a leaker known as “synthwavedd” on X, indicates a shift away from the model’s original plan to offer limited free access followed by usage credits sold separately. The phrase “purchased separately from your plan” has reportedly been removed from relevant user interface copy, signaling a potential restructuring of the pricing model.
Decrypt has verified the authenticity of these strings. By downloading and analyzing the macOS Apple Silicon Claude Code package, the new Fable 5 copy was found within the executable. The exact wording observed was: “You’ve used your included Fable 5 usage for this week. Continuing on Fable 5 uses usage credits.”
While these code changes do not guarantee an immediate relaunch, they strongly suggest active development and planning for Fable 5’s reintroduction. Such modifications are typically made months before a feature is released.
Amazon Bedrock Listing Adds to Speculation
Further fueling speculation, some users have noted that Amazon Bedrock’s model catalog continues to list mentions of Claude Fable 5. This could suggest that the model’s return might be sooner rather than later. A listing on Amazon Bedrock, identified as sold by Anthropic, appeared on June 24th, adding to the growing signals of Fable 5’s imminent return.
The History of Fable 5’s Ban
Fable 5, the first publicly available model from Anthropic’s Mythos class, was abruptly pulled on June 12th. The Trump administration issued an emergency export control directive, citing a potential jailbreak vulnerability that could pose a national threat. Anthropic complied with the directive but disputed the severity of the alleged vulnerability, arguing that similar exploits could be achieved with existing models.
The situation led to a public dispute, including an appearance by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei alongside President Trump at the G7 summit. Anthropic had previously faced scrutiny from the Trump administration, including being labeled a supply-chain risk for refusing to allow its AI to be used in certain warfare applications and being accused of being “woke.”
Shifting Political Landscape
Recent developments suggest a potential thaw in the relationship between Anthropic and the administration. According to Wired, Anthropic has reportedly appointed co-founder Tom Brown as its primary liaison for White House discussions regarding Fable 5’s return, a move that has been met with a more favorable reception.
Brown has been engaged in meetings with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross since mid-June. Negotiations are now focused on establishing a shared framework for evaluating AI jailbreak incidents, aiming to define clear criteria for when a model vulnerability constitutes a national security threat.
President Trump himself indicated last week that he no longer views Anthropic as a national security threat, a departure from his stance in mid-June. Anthropic responded with a statement thanking the administration for its “ongoing partnership.” While Fable 5 remains offline, the political climate surrounding its potential return appears to have significantly cooled.
If the recent code updates are indicative, Anthropic is now planning for Fable 5’s integration into subscription plans with a weekly usage cadence, aligning with initial user expectations rather than a separate credit system. The model’s official status page, status.claude.com, still reflects the June 13th suspension with no restoration date announced.
