$2.1B Crypto Expiry Looms: Market Impact Unclear

Bitcoin Options Expiry Set to Pass with Minimal Market Impact

Approximately 30,500 Bitcoin options contracts, representing a notional value of around $1.9 billion, are set to expire on Friday, June 19. While a significant sum, this event is slightly smaller than the previous week’s and is not anticipated to significantly influence spot market prices.

The broader cryptocurrency market experienced a modest gain early in the week before retreating in the latter half. The total market capitalization has hovered near the $2.25 trillion mark, with approximately $70 billion exiting the space since Monday.

Geopolitical and economic factors have also contributed to market sentiment. A recently signed peace deal between the United States and Iran has not bolstered confidence, while Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh maintained interest rates at their current level on Wednesday, as widely expected. However, the possibility of future rate hikes remains if inflation continues its upward trend.

This week’s Bitcoin options contracts exhibit a put/call ratio of 0.78, indicating a slight dominance of sellers of long (call) contracts over sellers of short (put) contracts. The “max pain” point, the price at which most options would expire worthless, is estimated at $65,000. This is approximately $2,000 above current spot prices, suggesting that many option holders may face losses upon expiry.

Open interest (OI), representing the total value or number of outstanding Bitcoin options contracts, remains highest at the $80,000 strike price on Deribit, with $1.6 billion. However, short sellers still hold $1.3 billion in OI at the $60,000 strike. Across all exchanges, total BTC options OI has been on an upward trajectory over the past week, reaching $36 billion, according to data from Coinglass.

Derivatives provider Greeks Live has identified the $60,000 strike as a “critical threshold.” The firm warned that a sustained breach below this level could shift dealer hedging flows from a stabilizing role to one that reinforces a downward trend, thereby increasing the likelihood of a more rapid price decline. Conversely, the $70,000 to $82,000 range is considered a “positive gamma range,” where trading activity is expected to exert a “natural dampening effect on volatility.”

Derivatives analytics provider Laevitas commented on the market’s recent behavior, noting that “a week of grinding calm has gutted the front of the BTC volume surface.” This sentiment was echoed in a social media post, which highlighted a significant drop in seven-day at-the-money implied volatility (IV) from approximately 46 to 36, while longer-dated volatility remained near 43. The curve, which was inverted a week prior, suggesting a “classic fear-front,” has since normalized.

    Ethereum and Broader Market Performance

In addition to the Bitcoin options, approximately 137,600 Ethereum contracts are also expiring, with a notional value of $234 million. The max pain point for Ethereum options is set at $1,725, and the put/call ratio stands at 1.0. Total ETH options OI across all exchanges is approximately $6 billion.

Cumulatively, the total notional value of crypto options expiring today amounts to around $2.1 billion, characterizing it as a relatively minor expiry event.

The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a downturn this Friday morning in Asia, with total capitalization falling by 2.4%. Bitcoin has dropped from its intraday high of $64,500 to approximately $62,800 at the time of writing, and a retest of recent lows appears probable as market momentum wanes. Ethereum has declined by 3% on the day and is nearing a fall below $1,700, trading near its lowest levels in over a year. Other cryptocurrencies, including Hyperliquid, Zcash, Sui, and Avalanche, are also registering more substantial losses.

  • Tokenized Stocks, RWAs Lead Crypto Growth

Tokenized Stocks, RWAs Lead Crypto Growth

Tokenized Stocks Lead Crypto Sector Growth, Outpacing Meme Coins

Tokenized stocks have emerged as the fastest-growing category within the cryptocurrency market, experiencing a remarkable surge between January 2024 and May 2026. A new report from CoinGecko, which tracks the number of listed coins across major sectors, reveals that this segment expanded by an impressive 3,314.3% during the period. The number of tokenized stock offerings grew from a mere 14 to 478.

    Real World Assets Gain Traction

Following closely behind tokenized stocks, Real World Assets (RWA) also demonstrated significant growth, increasing by 1,903.1%. This category saw its coin listings climb from 64 to 1,282. The substantial expansion in both tokenized stocks and RWAs underscores a growing investor interest in integrating traditional financial assets onto blockchain networks. CoinGecko noted that the trend toward tokenizing real-world assets gained considerable momentum from late 2024 onwards.

    DeFi Remains a Dominant Force

Despite the rise of these newer categories, Decentralized Finance (DeFi) maintained its position as the largest non-meme cryptocurrency sector by the end of the study period. The number of DeFi-related coins saw a substantial increase, growing from 549 in January 2024 to 2,328 by May 2026, representing a growth rate of 324.0%.

AI-Related Coins Surge to Second Place

Another prominent trend observed during this timeframe was the rapid proliferation of AI-related cryptocurrency listings. CoinGecko reported that AI has become the second-largest listed category on its platform, experiencing a dramatic rise from 145 coins at the beginning of 2024 to 1,798 by May 2026, a growth of 1,140.0%.

In this ascent, AI-related coins surpassed Gaming (GameFi), which had held the second position for a significant portion of 2024. GameFi saw growth of nearly 263%, concluding the period with 1,379 listed coins. CoinGecko attributed the surge in the AI category to increased momentum starting in October 2024, coinciding with the launch of the AI-themed meme coin Goatseus Maximus (GOAT).

The expansion of AI in the broader tech landscape, driven by companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Nvidia, has fueled this trend within crypto. Key developments contributing to this growth include a rising number of AI-branded meme coins and the emergence of on-chain AI agents, which attracted considerable speculative interest and developer activity towards the end of 2024.

Meme Coin Landscape Diversifies Amidst Performance Challenges

Meme coins, while not the fastest-growing category, continued to expand in number. By May 2026, CoinGecko listed 3,287 meme coins across 10 distinct categories. Dog-themed tokens remained the largest sub-group, with 1,055 coins, following a significant boom during the 2024 meme coin frenzy, driven by traders flocking to Solana-based dog coins amid rallies for DOGE and WIF.

AI Meme emerged as another notable subcategory, growing from a negligible presence at the start of 2024 to 499 coins by May 2026 as interest in AI permeated the crypto space. The Boy’s Club ecosystem also developed into one of the largest meme coin subcategories, reaching 346 coins. PolitiFi experienced a surge in popularity leading up to the 2024 US election but saw its growth stall afterward. Chinese Meme represented the newest trend, climbing to 117 coins by May 2026.

Despite the substantial increase in meme coin listings, their market performance has been considerably less robust. Data from CryptoRank indicates that the meme coin sector has struggled to recover since its peak in 2024. Its overall market value has significantly diminished, even with several attempts at a rebound. While Dogecoin continues to hold its dominant position, most major meme coins are trading well below their previous all-time highs.

  • Gemini AI Forecasts Major XRP Surge

Gemini AI Forecasts Major XRP Surge

Google’s Gemini AI has offered a starkly defined outlook for XRP’s price trajectory over the next 90 days, hinging on a single legislative event and a potential shift in market liquidity. The AI’s assessment, particularly its word choice, signals a belief that XRP’s classification as a digital commodity, rather than an incremental development, would instantly dismantle compliance hurdles that have thus far prevented substantial allocations from sovereign wealth and pension funds.

    Regulatory Catalyst

Gemini views the proposed CLARITY Act not as a gradual catalyst but as a decisive legislative event capable of unlocking capital that has been held back by years of litigation. This framing distinguishes Gemini’s prediction from more measured adoption narratives. The bull case anticipates a breakout from XRP’s current $1.16 baseline to between $2.20 and $3.00 within the next 90 days, representing an 89% to 158% surge. The linchpin for this optimistic scenario is the pending bipartisan CLARITY Act, which is expected to reach the White House for signing.

This regulatory clarity, combined with what Gemini terms “explosive tier-1 interest”—major global banks acquiring stakes in U.S. spot XRP ETFs as cumulative inflows continue to rise—creates a setup for rapid asset re-rating. The narrative is not one of XRP gradually appreciating over years, but rather a swift influx of capital that has been waiting on the sidelines, moving in within weeks following a legal resolution.

    Liquidity Headwinds

Conversely, the bear case centers on a liquidity-driven shift. The Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance and the abandonment of forward guidance have prompted a broader market de-risking. Gemini explicitly identifies this as a systemic issue, not specific to XRP. Should XRP falter below its key psychological demand level of $1.07, momentum could fracture, leading to a sharp downside correction toward the $0.93 to $0.76 support zone. This bearish outlook does not imply XRP’s fundamental failure but rather its susceptibility to being pulled down by macroeconomic currents beyond its control.

    Technical Underpinnings

XRP is currently trading at $1.16765, hovering just above the $1.07 level that Gemini has identified as the dividing line between bullish and bearish scenarios. The daily chart illustrates the significance of this price point. After a relentless descent from a $3.65 peak in the latter half of 2025, the June low at $1.05 represented the first significant test of territory not visited since the early stages of the downtrend. The subsequent bounce, sustained over several sessions without immediate reversal, lends structural weight to the $1.07 level, elevating it beyond an arbitrary round number.

Immediate resistance is observed at $1.30, the former floor of a multi-month consolidation range that held through February to May before the recent breakdown. Reclaiming this zone would signal a shift from defense to offense for XRP’s chart. Beyond that, the $1.60 region presents the next substantial hurdle before Gemini’s $2.20 to $3.00 target gains technical credibility.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 42.64, with the signal line at 35.94, indicating a modest but consistent positive divergence. While momentum dipped into the low 30s during the June decline, it has since climbed back above its average without reaching neutral territory. This pattern suggests a reduction in selling pressure, though not yet replaced by robust accumulation. This technical picture mirrors Gemini’s overall assessment: XRP is precariously positioned between a potential regulatory catalyst for a sharp ascent and a liquidity drain that could precipitate a significant decline, with $1.07 serving as the critical determinant.

The Rotation to the Next Frontier

The market is approaching a phase where capital shifts from established assets to emerging opportunities. Large-cap cryptocurrencies typically decelerate gradually, with compressed returns and sustained resistance levels. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP are currently exhibiting this behavior, with XRP having been poised for its next major move for an extended period.

As capital seeks new avenues, it often gravitates towards early-stage presales, projects with modest raises, unproven teams, and solutions to industry-wide problems that remain unaddressed. This combination, often overlooked initially, becomes impossible to ignore as it gains traction.

    Cross-Chain Liquidity: The Unsolved Problem

Cross-chain liquidity represents such a pervasive challenge. Dominant ecosystems like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana operate with isolated liquidity systems, lacking native interoperability. Users and developers navigating these disparate networks incur direct costs through fees, slippage, failed transactions, and time. This fragmentation is hardwired into the foundational architecture of these networks and cannot be easily patched.

LiquidChain is developing a layer designed to render this problem obsolete, creating a single execution environment that connects all three ecosystems simultaneously. This would enable a “deploy once, reach everywhere” paradigm without incurring cross-chain taxes on every interaction. The presale is currently priced at $0.01454, with over $800,000 raised, indicating that the broader market has yet to fully engage with the project.

The inherent risk profile at this stage is significant, with adoption, liquidity, and execution remaining unproven. However, projects that deliver 10x or 100x returns are typically those that address fundamental problems before the market fully recognizes them. LiquidChain is currently operating within this critical window of opportunity.

  • Midjourney Shifts Focus to Medical Imaging, Developing MRI Alternative

Midjourney Shifts Focus to Medical Imaging, Developing MRI Alternative

Midjourney, the AI company renowned for its image generation platform, is venturing into the healthcare sector with the unveiling of Midjourney Medical. This new division is developing a novel full-body imaging system dubbed “Ultrasonic CT,” which merges ultrasound hardware with AI-driven image reconstruction. The company claims this technology can produce detailed three-dimensional body scans in approximately 60 seconds.

A Bold Leap into Medical Imaging

Midjourney outlined ambitious deployment plans, stating in a release, “Our goal at Midjourney Medical is to deploy around 50,000 of these scanners around the world over the next six years and use this fleet of sensors to do a billion full-body scans every month.” This strategic pivot into medical imaging hardware, healthcare research, and wellness services marks a significant departure for the company, which launched in 2022 as an AI text-to-image generation platform.

The proposed scanner involves users entering a water-filled chamber and being lowered through a ring equipped with roughly 500,000 ultrasonic transmitters and receivers. “As you descend into the water, hundreds of thousands of tiny elements take turns, sending out waves, listening together, compressing and then streaming data to a massive cluster where thousands of computers split the task,” the company explained.

    Wellness Facilities and Future Potential

Midjourney intends to introduce this technology through the Midjourney Spa, a wellness facility slated to open in San Francisco in late 2027. The spa will feature amenities such as hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges, and scanning rooms, with plans for expansion in 2028. The company expressed optimism about the technology’s impact, stating, “We think it’s completely possible that with enough early imaging in the future, the world could avoid 30% of all deaths and 50% of all healthcare costs. The cultural, physical, and mental health benefits of all of this are hard to comprehend, but also hard to overstate.”

Looking ahead, Midjourney envisions the system eventually generating MRI-like images in about 60 seconds, bypassing the need for radiation or strong magnetic fields. This contrasts sharply with conventional full-body MRI scans, which typically require 30 minutes or longer. The company plans to dedicate the next year to research trials, algorithm development, and refining scanner hardware. Initially, it will offer body composition maps while seeking regulatory approvals for diagnostic applications.

    The AI Healthcare Landscape

Midjourney’s announcement arrives as AI developers increasingly explore the healthcare domain, though often through digital solutions. OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health and ChatGPT for Clinicians, enabling users and providers to integrate medical records and wellness data with its AI. Anthropic has also expanded Claude’s applications into healthcare and life sciences, covering areas like clinical research, patient data analysis, and administrative tasks. Elon Musk has similarly suggested Grok for medical advice.

However, Midjourney’s approach distinguishes itself by focusing on medical imaging hardware rather than software. The company is betting on advancements in AI, sensor technology, and computing power to make full-body scans more accessible, affordable, and rapid. “We hope with this announcement you start to see that Midjourney is a research lab that’s constantly asking what we can build for people, and what we can change within the foundations of the human experience,” the company concluded.

  • China’s Z.AI Unveils GLM-5.2, Nvidia-Free Model Challenging Claude Opus

    China’s Z.AI Unveils GLM-5.2, Nvidia-Free Model Challenging Claude Opus

Z.AI Unveils GLM-5.2, Challenging AI Dominance with Open-Source Power

Z.AI, a Beijing-based artificial intelligence lab, has launched its latest model, GLM-5.2, on June 16, touting top-tier performance that surpasses its predecessor, GLM 5.1. The release comes as the company, which has been on the U.S. Entity List since January 2025, appears to be capitalizing on growing concerns regarding America’s approach to artificial intelligence. The past week has seen Z.AI’s stock surge by 90%, reaching a new all-time high, fueled by the ban on Anthropic’s Fable and the introduction of GLM-5.2.

    GLM-5.2 Demonstrates Strong Benchmark Performance

GLM-5.2’s performance metrics support the considerable hype surrounding its release. On the FrontierSWE benchmark, which assesses an AI agent’s ability to complete open-ended technical projects, GLM-5.2 achieved a dominance rate of 74.4. This places it closely behind Claude Opus 4.8’s 75.1 and ahead of GPT-5.5’s 72.6. In the SWE-bench Pro test, designed to evaluate the autonomous resolution of real-world GitHub issues, GLM-5.2 scored 62.1, outperforming GPT-5.5’s 58.6 and significantly exceeding its predecessor GLM-5.1’s score of 58.4.

The Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, which aggregates nine different scores to gauge the overall quality of AI models, has recognized GLM-5.2 as the leading open-source model to date. OpenRouter’s benchmarks further position GLM-5.2 in the same performance tier as the now-banned Claude Fable 5.

    Hardware and Cost Innovations

A notable aspect of GLM-5.2’s development is the hardware utilized for its training. The model was trained exclusively on Huawei Ascend chips, with no Nvidia components involved. Emad Mostaque, founder of Stability AI, estimated the total training costs at approximately $25 million, with 80% allocated to post-training efforts. This figure represents a significant cost advantage compared to its industry peers.

As previously reported, Z.AI has been training image models on Huawei’s Ascend Atlas servers without using any American chips. GLM-5.2 builds upon this infrastructure, featuring a 744-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with a substantial 1 million-token context window. This is a fivefold increase from GLM-5.1’s 200,000-token limit. The model is released under an MIT license, which prevents government directives from restricting access.

Tokens are defined as the segments of text a model can process and generate, while parameters refer to the internal settings and values that dictate how a model interprets information and formulates responses.

    Developer Impact and Accessibility

For developers, the expanded context window represents a significant operational shift. Tasks such as navigating entire code repositories, performing multi-file refactors, and executing long agentic pipelines, which previously required breaking down into smaller segments, can now be handled within single API calls. The API pricing for GLM-5.2 is set at $1.40 per million input tokens and $4.40 per million output tokens, a stark contrast to Claude Opus 4.8’s $5 input and $25 output rates. The Coding Plan is available starting at approximately $18 per month and integrates directly with Claude Code, Cline, Kilo Code, and other popular agentic environments.

Local deployment of GLM-5.2 is also technically feasible. Unsloth AI has developed 2-bit GGUF quantizations that reduce the model’s size from 1.51 terabytes to 238 gigabytes while maintaining approximately 82% accuracy. However, this still necessitates a considerable 256 gigabytes of unified memory or a combination of RAM and VRAM, comparable to a fully equipped M4 Ultra Mac Studio or a workstation with a mid-range GPU and 256 gigabytes of system RAM with mixture-of-experts offloading. While substantial, this level of hardware is attainable for users seeking to run the model locally.

    Real-World Application and Economic Viability

In a practical test, GLM-5.2 was tasked with building a game that combined typing mechanics with shooter elements. While the user interface was less polished than those generated by other models, the gameplay experience was notably diverse, featuring varied scenarios across waves, shifting enemy types, and later-stage boss encounters. The model generated more varied game states than any other tested for the same task in a zero-shot setup.

The economic advantages of GLM-5.2 are most apparent in workflows requiring output diversity, such as multi-shot generation and agentic pipelines. At open-source pricing levels, the cost-effectiveness is compelling. However, for highly demanding and sustained tasks, such as the SWE-Marathon benchmark where GLM-5.2 scored 13.0 against Opus 4.8’s 26.0, a performance gap with closed-source frontier models remains.

The open-source weights for GLM-5.2 are available on HuggingFace under the MIT license, with quantized weights also accessible. Subscribers to the GLM Coding Plan can now utilize the model by specifying “GLM-5.2” in their model string. Free testing with usage constraints is also available on z.AI.

  • CFTC Bans Celsius Founder Alex Mashinsky From Trading

CFTC Bans Celsius Founder Alex Mashinsky From Trading

CFTC Settles With Celsius Founder Alex Mashinsky, Imposing Permanent Trading Ban

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has concluded its 2023 enforcement action against Celsius founder Alex Mashinsky, permanently barring him from participating in markets regulated by the agency.

The consent order also includes a lifetime ban on Mashinsky’s registration with the CFTC. This resolution marks the culmination of the regulator’s inaugural case against a digital asset lending platform, as noted in its 2023 press release.

Mashinsky, who also served as CEO of Celsius, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of securities and commodities fraud. These charges stemmed from the collapse of his lending business, which halted withdrawals and left customers unable to access billions of dollars in deposits.

Following the withdrawal freeze, Celsius filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to salvage its operations. However, these efforts proved unsuccessful, resulting in customers losing over $5 billion.

In addition to criminal proceedings, Mashinsky faced civil lawsuits from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), alongside the CFTC. Some of these allegations included claims that he misappropriated approximately $42 million from customers.

Earlier this year, the Federal Trade Commission and Mashinsky reached a settlement that reduced an initial $4.7 billion judgment to $10 million. This settlement is contingent on Mashinsky’s full and material disclosure of assets, with the judgment potentially reinstated if he fails to comply. The agreement also permanently prohibits Mashinsky from working within the cryptocurrency industry.

In May, just over a year after his sentencing, Mashinsky submitted a handwritten motion seeking to overturn his 12-year prison sentence. He cited ineffective legal counsel and a conflict of interest, alleging that his legal firm’s prior engagement with FTX co-founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, widely known as SBF, created such a conflict.

Mashinsky contends that Bankman-Fried manipulated Celsius’s native token, CEL, leading to financial harm for both his firm and its customers. Bankman-Fried is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for fraud convictions related to the collapse of FTX. Last week, he lost an appeal to overturn his sentence and conviction.

  • ASTER Soars 23% as DEX Funnels 99% Fees to Token Buybacks

ASTER Soars 23% as DEX Funnels 99% Fees to Token Buybacks

Aster DEX Overhauls Tokenomics, Funneling 99% of Fees to Buybacks

Aster DEX, a decentralized exchange ranked 48th by market capitalization, has implemented a significant shift in its tokenomics, directing 99% of its platform fees towards ASTER token buybacks. This new model, which went live on June 17 at 12:00 PM UTC, also includes a one-to-one burn from reserves for every token purchased.

The exchange, supported by YZ Labs, announced the upgrade via a post on X. Under the revised framework, 99% of daily platform fees will be automatically used to repurchase ASTER tokens. These purchases will be executed through time-weighted average price (TWAP) mechanisms throughout the day and settled on the blockchain.

Crucially, each token bought back will trigger an equivalent burn from Aster’s reserves. The team’s allocation of tokens will be the first to be burned, resulting in what the exchange describes as a “198% buyback” – a 99% repurchase of tokens and a 99% burn from reserves.

However, the repurchased tokens will not be permanently removed from circulation. Instead, they will be directed to stakers, added to the protocol’s Loyalty Reward pool, which already distributes 300,000 ASTER per epoch.

The burn target is substantial. Aster DEX launched with a total supply of 8 billion tokens and aims to reduce this to 3 billion, earmarking over 60% of the supply for destruction. According to CoinGecko, the current circulating supply stands at approximately 2.68 billion tokens, with a total supply of 7.82 billion, indicating a considerable path ahead to reach the burn objective.

The announcement of the new tokenomics had an immediate market impact. ASTER’s value surged by 23%, climbing from around $0.64 to $0.79, as reported by CoinGecko. However, the token has since relinquished a portion of these gains, trading near $0.65 at the time of reporting. This price remains nearly 73% below its all-time high of $2.41, reached in September 2025.

This is not the first time Aster DEX has introduced a buyback program. In December 2025, the exchange announced a similar initiative, allocating 80% of daily fees to token repurchases. That plan involved automatic daily buys using 40% of fees, with an additional 20% to 40% held in a discretionary strategic reserve for targeted market purchases.

The December 2025 announcement also coincided with a brief price increase, with ASTER spiking 30% to $1.30, partly fueled by news that former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao held over $2.5 million worth of the cryptocurrency. The current plan eliminates the strategic reserve component entirely, significantly increasing the allocation towards automatic buybacks, with almost all platform fee revenue now directed to this purpose.

  • HIVE Stock Surges on $220M AI Infrastructure Deal

HIVE Stock Surges on $220M AI Infrastructure Deal

HIVE Digital Technologies stock surged more than 7% on Thursday following the announcement of a $220 million GPU cloud contract with Bell Canada and the Toronto-based AI firm Cohere. This marks the company’s largest deal to date and signals a definitive shift for the Bitcoin miner into the AI infrastructure sector.

A Landmark Deal for AI Infrastructure

The three-year contract, to be executed through HIVE’s subsidiary BUZZ High Performance Computing, involves the deployment of 2,304 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs. These advanced chips, designed for cutting-edge AI model training and inference, will be installed at Bell’s purpose-built data center in Merritt, British Columbia.

Cohere, a prominent large language model company that develops AI systems for enterprises and governments, will leverage this compute power to operate its platform for Canadian clients.

    The Rise of Sovereign AI

The concept of “sovereign AI”—AI operating on domestic infrastructure with locally controlled data—is gaining significant traction, particularly for government clients. Canada has been a strong proponent of this strategy, with Ottawa committing over $2 billion to domestic AI compute as part of its Sovereign AI Compute Strategy, including a direct $240 million investment in Cohere. This new contract represents the tangible realization of that national investment.

Cohere is a fitting partner for this initiative. The Toronto-based company is among a select group globally developing foundation models, the underlying AI technology powering enterprise chatbots, government document processing, and a wide array of other applications. Cohere recently announced a merger with Germany’s Aleph Alpha, valuing the combined entity at approximately $20 billion. The current contract builds upon an existing partnership between Bell and Cohere, which dates back to July 2025, by providing the essential compute infrastructure.

“Canada helped pioneer modern artificial intelligence. What we have lacked is not talent, it is industrial infrastructure to commercialize that talent at scale before others do it for us,” stated Frank Holmes, executive chairman at HIVE Digital Technologies. “This partnership with Bell and Cohere is a defining moment. BUZZ HPC is the GPU factory layer that transforms Canada’s AI ambitions from political promises into productive national assets.”

    HIVE’s Strategic Pivot

For HIVE, which reported $278.3 million in Bitcoin mining revenue last quarter, this deal is a significant milestone in its strategic pivot that began in 2022. The company initiated its transition into AI by reallocating GPU capacity from crypto mining. This move was further bolstered by a deal with Dell for new GPUs last November and a $115 million convertible note offering in April to finance hardware acquisitions. HIVE is not alone in this transition; Keel Infrastructure, formerly Bitfarms, sold its last Paraguay mining facility in April and is pursuing a similar strategy.

The volatile nature of cryptocurrency mining returns, exacerbated by increasing competition and market downturns, contrasts sharply with the burgeoning demand for AI compute. Clients, especially government agencies, are increasingly opting for multi-year contracts with fixed rates. This shift represents a move from one potentially volatile market to another, but one that is underpinned by a clear government mandate.

    Future Growth and Expansion

Upon deployment, expected between late 2026 and early 2027, HIVE anticipates generating approximately $70 million in new annual recurring revenue, in addition to the $35 million already secured from existing GPU operations. The company’s contracted HPC revenue target now surpasses $100 million.

Furthermore, HIVE is developing a larger project: a 320-megawatt AI data center in the Greater Toronto Area. This facility is designed to accommodate over 100,000 Nvidia GPUs at its full build-out. HIVE projects this facility will generate roughly $360 million in annualized recurring revenue once fully operational, with a broader target of $660 million in annualized HPC revenue by the end of 2028.

  • MiCA Deadline Looms: Europe’s Crypto Firms Under Pressure

MiCA Deadline Looms: Europe’s Crypto Firms Under Pressure

Europe’s cryptocurrency industry is poised for a significant transformation as the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation’s transition period concludes on July 1. This deadline marks the end of an era where crypto firms could operate under older national frameworks, ushering in a new requirement for companies serving EU users to obtain a MiCA license. This single authorization will grant them passporting rights across all 27 member states.

A New Phase of Growth, or a Squeeze?

Proponents of MiCA view the upcoming deadline as a pivotal moment. Alexis Sirkia, head of trading infrastructure firm Yellow Network, believes the regulation will propel the industry into a “new phase of growth,” with its clearer rules fostering transparency and trust. He contends that MiCA’s ultimate success will be judged not by the number of licenses issued, but by its ability to drive broader adoption of digital assets.

However, the on-the-ground reality appears more complex. According to the European Securities and Markets Authority’s (ESMA) public register, only around 200 firms currently hold full Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) authorization, a small fraction of the market that existed before MiCA.

Avital Haitovich, a partner and head of blockchain at law firm Gornitzky, finds this low figure unsurprising. She points to a demanding application process that can involve hundreds of pages detailing governance, anti-money laundering controls, capital adequacy, and operational resilience, often followed by multiple rounds of regulator inquiries. She also noted that by mid-2026, not all member states had even issued their first licenses.

Haitovich suggests that while MiCA is strengthening the European market, it also risks pushing liquidity elsewhere. This, she explained, is the “core trade-off in any early regulatory framework.” The single passport and common rules are intended to simplify navigation for institutions, but the high cost of compliance is “likely to accelerate consolidation,” potentially leading to a market that is “smaller, more concentrated, and more tightly supervised.”

    Major Players Face Scrutiny

The impact of this regulatory shift is already being felt at the highest levels. Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is reportedly facing denial of an EU license, with Greece’s market regulator expected to reject its application before the deadline, according to Reuters. Binance has stated its belief that it is compliant and remains “willing and ready to operate under a truly harmonized MiCA regime.” However, the exchange has cautioned that disruptions to its access could diminish liquidity and competition within the bloc.

For some, this consolidation is a welcome development. Joe Buttram, CEO of digital asset infrastructure firm Field Digital, described the situation as an “inflection point in Europe’s crypto brokerage sector.” He argued that European brokerages have historically been fragmented, hindering their competitiveness against global rivals, and anticipates an increase in acquisitions in the near future.

    VC Investment Shifts Focus

The regulatory shake-out is also influencing venture capital investment. Varun Datta, CEO and founder of early-stage venture firm Truth Ventures, highlighted the Binance situation as evidence that “scale is not the same as durability.” He believes that regulatory clarity is now acting as a “filter that directs capital toward founders building for long-term adoption,” favoring companies that prioritize compliance and governance as integral to their product offering.

    The DeFi Question Looms

Even as centralized firms adapt to the new regulations, authorities are beginning to address the complexities of decentralized finance (DeFi). Malta’s financial regulator has initiated an exploration into how DeFi might be incorporated within the MiCA framework. The regulator noted that many projects presented as “decentralized” still retain centralized elements, such as administrator keys, governance control, and protocol upgrade rights.

In a discussion paper open for feedback until July 10, the Malta Financial Services Authority is seeking input on whether decentralization should be viewed as a spectrum rather than a binary concept, and under what conditions a protocol might fall outside MiCA’s purview.

Datta commented that the end of MiCA’s transition period is merely the initial step in establishing Europe’s regulatory landscape. He added that Malta’s examination of DeFi’s place within MiCA underscores “the growing importance of decentralized infrastructure and on-chain financial services.” He concluded that if Europe strikes the right balance, MiCA could serve as “a catalyst for attracting the next generation of blockchain startups and institutional capital to the region.”

Kentucky Sues Prediction Markets Kalshi, Polymarket

Kentucky Joins States Suing Prediction Market Platforms

Kentucky has become the latest state to file lawsuits against prediction market platforms, accusing industry leaders Kalshi and Polymarket of operating illegal sports betting operations.

“Kalshi and Polymarket are operating illegal sportsbooks in Kentucky and breaking our laws,” stated Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman. “These multi-billion dollar corporations and their legal fictions don’t pass the sniff test.”

Kentucky’s action follows similar legal challenges from numerous states nationwide in recent months, which allege violations of state-level gambling laws by these platforms.

The platforms contend that their wagers, even those that closely resemble sports bets to users, should be classified as swaps under the federal jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This interpretation was notably supported by the Trump administration.

The federal government, during President Trump’s tenure, engaged in a vigorous dispute with both Democratic and Republican-led states over the regulation of prediction markets. The CFTC and the Department of Justice initiated legal action against several states for attempting to regulate these novel platforms and vowed to pursue further legal challenges against any state that followed suit.

However, these federal threats have not dissuled other states from asserting their positions on the matter.

In its lawsuit, Kentucky regulators argued that by failing to register as gambling platforms, Kalshi and Polymarket have neglected crucial responsibilities, such as providing resources for users to address gambling addiction.

The state also filed suit against VGW, an online casino platform accused of offering illegal sweepstakes.

As legal battles over prediction market regulation continue to unfold across the country, outcomes have been mixed. In the Sixth Circuit, which encompasses federal courts in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Michigan, two district court judges have issued preliminary rulings in favor of state regulators, while one judge has sided with the prediction markets.

The ultimate resolution of this complex issue is widely expected to be determined by the U.S. Supreme Court.
