Circle Bolsters Blockchain IP with Acquisition of IBM Patent Portfolio

Circle Internet Group has acquired a significant portion of IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio, a strategic move that substantially expands the company’s intellectual property holdings and is intended to support its existing and future products.

The acquisition encompasses over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents globally. These patents cover core blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle claims this acquisition positions it as the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States, marking a significant development in the company’s intellectual property strategy.

According to the stablecoin issuer, the expanded patent portfolio will bolster products including USDC, the Circle Payments Network, and Arc, as well as its lineup of on-chain products and agentic financial tools. Circle’s General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Sarah Wilson emphasized that intellectual property is critical to advancing the company’s mission and expanding the adoption of on-chain infrastructure. She added that this acquisition enhances Circle’s ability to advance the infrastructure powering global, internet-native finance.

While the financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition aligns with Circle’s broader strategy to build out its infrastructure for internet-native finance. This is further evidenced by Circle joining the LOT Network over three years ago, a global nonprofit designed to protect members from patent lawsuits brought by Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs). The primary objective of joining LOT Network was to mitigate legal risks while supporting the development of blockchain-based products and services. Circle also previously secured its first patent for Parallel Block Processing.

Underscoring Circle’s ongoing strategic growth, earlier this month the company received approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish First National Digital Currency Bank, N.A., to operate as Circle National Trust. This charter will enable the stablecoin issuer to offer fiduciary crypto custody services and is expected to eventually manage USDC reserves under OCC supervision. Additionally, BNY Mellon expanded its partnership with Circle by integrating USDC into its Digital Asset Custody platform, signaling growing institutional adoption and integration of Circle’s services.

Circle and IBM also plan to pursue further business opportunities together, indicating potential for ongoing collaboration beyond this patent acquisition.

Circle’s consolidation of its blockchain intellectual property, combined with recent regulatory approvals and expanded partnerships, demonstrates a proactive approach to strengthening its competitive position and advancing its vision for the future of digital finance.
