Mastercard has been announced as a sponsor for the upcoming XRP Ledger Hackathon, an event scheduled for October 24-25, directly preceding the Ripple Swell conference. In parallel, 21Shares has updated the pricing index for its XRP ETF (TOXR) and altered its sponsor payment structure, a move occurring as spot XRP ETFs have reported renewed net inflows.
Why This Matters
The materials describe a narrow update: Mastercard was announced as a sponsor for the XRP Ledger Hackathon, a pre-event to Ripple Swell. The specific reasons for 21Shares changing the sponsor payment frequency and method.
Mastercard’s XRP Ledger Hackathon Sponsorship
The 36-hour XRP Ledger Hackathon aims to foster innovation within the XRP Ledger ecosystem. The XRP Ledger Foundation expressed enthusiasm about Mastercard’s involvement, highlighting the company’s significant presence in the global payments industry. This sponsorship represents an expansion of Mastercard’s engagement with the broader Ripple ecosystem, following previous integrations and partnerships announced in March and June, which included support for assets like Ripple’s stablecoin, RLUSD, and Circle’s USDC.
21Shares XRP ETF Adjustments
Separately, 21Shares has made adjustments to its XRP ETF, TOXR. According to an SEC filing, the ETF’s pricing index for the underlying XRP asset has been switched from the CME Group to the newly established FTSE XRP Index. This change became effective on August 27. Additionally, the frequency of sponsor payments for TOXR has been modified from weekly to quarterly, with payments now to be made in XRP.
XRP ETF Market Context
These adjustments by 21Shares coincide with a period of renewed inflows into spot XRP ETFs. Data indicates that these funds collectively attracted approximately $13.82 million on Monday, $24 million on Tuesday, and over $28 million on Wednesday of the week of August 26, 2026. However, TOXR itself has experienced cumulative net outflows totaling -$20.06 million, distinguishing it from other XRP ETFs. In contrast, the Bitwise XRP ETF has seen substantial cumulative net inflows, reaching $575 million.
Broader Ecosystem Connections
The XRP network’s robustness over the past decade has been highlighted as a key factor for its suitability in payment use cases. The XRP Ledger Foundation stated, “With a decade of proven robustness and architecture, the XRP network is ideally suited for payment use cases. Register, build, and connect with industry leaders like Mastercard. It’s your time to shine,” said the team.
Uncertainties remain regarding the specific reasons behind 21Shares’ changes to the sponsor payment frequency and method for TOXR. The long-term impact of Mastercard’s hackathon sponsorship on the XRP Ledger ecosystem and whether TOXR’s negative cumulative net flows will reverse are also points of observation.
