Bitwise Asset Management has significantly boosted its long-term price forecast for Bitcoin, projecting the cryptocurrency could reach $1.6 million by 2036. The firm’s revised outlook includes a bullish scenario of $3.7 million and a more conservative bear case of $131,000.
Institutional Inflows Drive Upward Revision
The upward adjustment of Bitwise’s 10-year base-case price target for Bitcoin (BTC), from $1.3 million to $1.6 million, is attributed to a notable shift of institutional capital into digital assets, the expansion of BTC markets, and a perceived stabilization of market cycles.
A Decade of Bitcoin: Volatility, Returns, and Correlations
The report, titled “2027 Bitcoin Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions,” delves into Bitcoin’s expected volatility, returns, and its correlation with other asset classes over the coming decade.
Bitwise identifies several key markets for Bitcoin adoption. At the forefront are institutional investors, followed by emerging market currencies, its role as a store of value, and offshore wealth.
Global institutions currently manage approximately $140 trillion in assets, a figure Bitwise anticipates could swell to $304 trillion by 2035. Even a modest allocation of 1% to 5% from this vast pool could translate into $1.5 trillion to $7.4 trillion in Bitcoin purchases.
Price Projections for 2036
Factoring in this projected demand, Bitwise has calculated potential Bitcoin prices for 2036, starting from its September price of $83,557. The firm’s base case stands at $1,599,766, with a bull case reaching $3,667,911 and a bear case at $130,686. These calculations incorporate Bitcoin’s compound annual growth rate of 34.3%, an average volatility of 27.8%, and an average correlation of 0.43 with U.S. stocks.
Bitwise concludes with confidence that Bitcoin is poised to be the best-performing asset over the next decade.
Key Risks to Bitcoin’s Future
Despite the optimistic outlook, Bitwise highlights three significant risks that could profoundly impact the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
The first concern is the advancement of quantum computing, which poses a threat by potentially exploiting vulnerabilities in Bitcoin’s public-key cryptography. Recent progress in this field, exemplified by achievements from companies like Google, brings the prospect of “Q-day” closer.
Secondly, AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs could circumvent quantum computing altogether, enabling the breaking of Bitcoin’s cryptography using existing technologies.
Finally, regulatory shifts represent a substantial risk. Reversals in regulatory frameworks could significantly dampen institutional investor sentiment, as their operations are heavily reliant on regulatory compliance.
Bitwise also cautions that volatility is likely to persist, characterized by “significant but diminishing drawdowns.” A less conservative Monte Carlo simulation suggests Bitcoin could surpass $4 million by the end of 2033 and reach $5.6 million by the end of 2034.
The firm’s increased confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term value comes as the cryptocurrency has recently traded above $81,000. However, the wide range of predictions has drawn criticism from some within the crypto community, who argue that such broad forecasts offer little certainty.
