Binance Withdrawals Surge After $6.3 Billion Hack, Showing Resilience Amidst Market Turmoil
Binance experienced a surge in withdrawals totaling billions of dollars following a record-breaking $6.3 billion hack, a development that has drawn parallels to the collapse of FTX in November 2022. However, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange is demonstrating a resilience that could potentially shield the industry from its most challenging period.
In the first nine and a half hours after services were restored on November 1, Binance processed $4.65 billion in withdrawals against $1.01 billion in deposits, resulting in net outflows of $3.64 billion. According to its Proof of Reserves data from October 28, the exchange held a total of $171 billion in assets, meaning the wave of withdrawals represented just 2.1% of its reported holdings.
Binance announced that withdrawals, including for Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, XRP, Dogecoin, USDT, and USDC across supported networks, were being re-enabled. The exchange also stated that 95% of the stolen assets had already been replaced. Some market observers, dubbed “bears,” had been vocal in their hopes for a repeat of the FTX scenario, anticipating another significant collapse.
These figures provide crucial context: despite the initial rush of withdrawals after the $6.3 billion hack, Binance retained assets valued at 47 times the net amount withdrawn. The exchange indicated that withdrawal activity had begun to stabilize, with deposits remaining substantial.
While the initial withdrawal figures might appear alarming, particularly when contrasted with the FTX situation, the circumstances differ significantly. The defunct FTX exchange experienced $6 billion in net withdrawals over 72 hours before halting customer withdrawals in November 2022.
Founder’s Confidence Amidst Crisis
Binance had previously stated it had allocated over $6.34 billion to cover the incident, including $5 billion in the affected token assets. The exchange also reported that partners had frozen approximately $3 billion linked to the attack.
The current crisis is fundamentally distinct from FTX’s downfall. FTX’s withdrawal run exposed a critical liquidity shortfall stemming from commingled customer funds and its entanglement with Alameda Research. In contrast, Binance has committed to covering the stolen assets rather than passing the losses onto its users.
Bitcoin’s Steady Response Signals Market Maturity
Bitcoin’s reaction offers a clear indication of the crypto market’s increased resilience compared to the FTX collapse. Following the $6.3 billion Binance hack, BTC experienced a brief dip towards $76,700 but managed to hold above the crucial $75,000 support level before recovering towards $79,000. This stands in stark contrast to November 2022, when Bitcoin plummeted nearly 10% on November 8 as FTX’s withdrawal crisis escalated, and then fell another 14.4% on November 9, closing near $15,877 after briefly touching $15,632.
While Binance’s hack triggered billions in withdrawals and widespread market liquidations, Bitcoin has so far avoided the cascading sell-off that followed FTX’s implosion. Its ability to defend the $75,000 mark suggests investors are viewing the incident as an isolated exchange security failure rather than a sign of systemic liquidity issues across the crypto industry.
Binance has already navigated significant financial and regulatory challenges. In November 2023, the exchange agreed to pay over $4 billion to resolve U.S. investigations into anti-money laundering and sanctions violations. Founder Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program, resigned as CEO, and paid a separate $50 million fine.
Despite this substantial settlement, Binance has continued to operate as the world’s largest crypto exchange. The latest hack presents a fresh test of its financial strength, operational resilience, and its capacity to maintain customer trust.
The broader crypto markets have felt the impact, with Bitcoin and Ethereum experiencing declines following the breach. Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw significant outflows, and leveraged positions faced heavy liquidations. However, both major cryptocurrencies showed partial recoveries after hitting their lows.
The question now is whether Binance withdrawals will continue to ease. The exchange is publishing updated Proof of Reserves data and completing its security review. While the comparison with FTX highlights the scale of investor concern, it does not necessarily predict the same outcome. Binance has absorbed a major hack, committed to covering user losses, and resumed withdrawals after billions left the platform.
November has evoked memories of 2022, but Binance’s response suggests the industry’s largest exchange is determined to prevent this crisis from escalating into another industry-wide collapse.
