Kalshi, BitGo Team for Crypto-Backed Futures Loans

Kalshi Enables Crypto-Backed Trading with BitGo Partnership

Kalshi, the prediction markets platform, is allowing its users to leverage their existing cryptocurrency holdings for trading, eliminating the need to liquidate digital assets. The company announced a new partnership with BitGo Holdings Inc. on October 21, 2026, enabling eligible clients to borrow against crypto assets held in custody at BitGo Bank & Trust. These borrowed funds can then be used as margin for Kalshi’s perpetual futures contracts.

Program Details and Collateral

This initiative operates under Kalshi Prime, the company’s U.S.-registered futures commission merchant. A futures commission merchant acts as a regulated intermediary, managing customer orders and collateral for futures trading. The program accepts three types of collateral: Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and stablecoins that adhere to the stipulations of the GENIUS Act.

The lending structure is a three-party arrangement. Clients act as borrowers, Kalshi Katalyst serves as the lender, and BitGo functions as the custodian, safeguarding the pledged assets. The borrowed capital is then used to support positions in Kalshi’s perpetual futures, which are contracts without expiration dates. This allows traders to maintain leveraged long or short positions indefinitely, provided they maintain sufficient margin.

Target Audience and Expansion

Kalshi is targeting two primary groups with this offering. The first comprises crypto-native traders who actively participate in perpetuals markets and view their coin holdings as working capital. The second group includes larger entities that prefer to avoid liquidating their cryptocurrency portfolios.

In a separate development, Kalshi is also expanding its reach through a new agreement that will grant Webull customers access to its perpetual futures.

Regulatory Milestones and Operational Speed

Kalshi received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in May 2026 for crypto perpetual futures, initially launching with a Bitcoin contract. The company introduced its first BTC perpetual in June 2026. This rapid progression, from regulatory approval to a live product, a retail distribution partner, and now a collateralized lending arrangement, has occurred in approximately five months.

Custody and Capital Efficiency

BitGo’s role is crucial in providing the custody infrastructure. By placing collateral at BitGo Bank & Trust, institutional clients gain access to a regulated custodian, which can be presented to compliance teams to verify the location of their digital assets. The immediate benefit of this arrangement is enhanced capital efficiency, allowing clients who previously had to choose between holding crypto or trading derivatives to now engage in both activities, provided they meet Kalshi’s eligibility criteria.

Inherent Risks and Future Outlook

The partnership also introduces significant risks. Borrowing against volatile assets to fund leveraged positions creates a dual layer of exposure. A sharp decline in Bitcoin or Ether could simultaneously reduce collateral value and lead to losses on leveraged positions. Stablecoin collateral offers a more conservative approach, with the GENIUS Act requirement limiting eligible tokens to those operating within the federal framework.

Key areas to monitor moving forward include whether Kalshi will broaden its range of eligible collateral beyond BTC, ETH, and compliant stablecoins, the pace at which Webull users adopt perpetual futures, and whether other U.S.-regulated trading venues introduce similar lending arrangements.
