Google Cloud Revenue Soars 82%, Gemini Reaches 950M Users

Google Cloud Surges with 82% Revenue Growth, Gemini App Reaches 950 Million Users

Mountain View, CA – Google Cloud has reported a dramatic acceleration in its business, with revenue soaring 82% year-over-year to $24.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026. This impressive growth rate, described as a “sprint” for a business of its scale, signals a significant shift for parent company Alphabet, which has long been perceived as vulnerable to the rise of AI chatbots.

The company’s flagship AI product, the Gemini app, also saw substantial gains, reaching 950 million monthly active users, a significant jump from approximately 450 million users a year prior. This performance positions Alphabet as a leader rather than a bystander in the current AI landscape.

The acceleration in cloud revenue is particularly noteworthy. After growing 63% in the first quarter of 2026, the growth rate surged to 82% in the subsequent quarter. This top-line expansion was accompanied by a significant boost in profitability, with Google Cloud’s operating income more than tripling to $8.8 billion and operating margins expanding to 35.6%.

Adding to the robust financial picture is a substantial backlog of contracted revenue not yet recognized, which stands at $514 billion. This backlog represents more than 20 times Google Cloud’s quarterly revenue, underscoring the strong demand for its services.

At the broader Alphabet level, total revenue reached $119.8 billion, a 24% increase year-over-year, with Google Cloud now contributing roughly one-fifth of that total.

The Gemini app’s user growth has been particularly striking. Having stood at around 750 million monthly active users in the fourth quarter of 2025, it has now surpassed the 950 million mark. Daily active users for the app have tripled year-over-year.

Developers are also increasingly adopting Google’s AI models, with billions of API tokens processed per minute. On the enterprise front, nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies are now utilizing Gemini Enterprise.

This rapid expansion comes with significant investment. Alphabet’s capital expenditures doubled year-over-year to $44.9 billion in the second quarter, a figure that exceeds Google Cloud’s entire quarterly revenue. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that this spending is crucial for building AI infrastructure and meeting customer demand. He also indicated that the company might forgo some short-term cloud revenue to prioritize compute resources for its advanced AI models.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, Android, and YouTube, has been strategically pivoting towards AI. Its core Search business has remained resilient, achieving an all-time high in revenue last quarter despite the growing prominence of rival chatbots.

For investors, the substantial increase in Alphabet’s revenue, coupled with healthy profit margins and a massive backlog, provides concrete evidence that its significant AI investments are translating into tangible business growth. The widespread adoption of Gemini Enterprise among top corporations, combined with its strong consumer user base, positions Alphabet favorably in the competitive enterprise AI market.

Pichai’s statement about potentially sacrificing short-term cloud revenue also suggests that capacity is currently a constraint, highlighting the intense demand for Google’s AI capabilities.
