Evernorth to Deploy 473 Million XRP with Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase

Evernorth Taps Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase, and BitGo for XRP Treasury Strategy

Evernorth Holdings, a digital asset treasury company, has named Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase, and BitGo as its inaugural institutional execution partners. The company intends to leverage its substantial holdings of 473 million XRP to generate returns, moving beyond a simple buy-and-hold approach.

The strategic partnerships are designed to facilitate institutional strategies for Evernorth’s XRP treasury. The company’s CEO, Asheesh Birla, stated that the objective is to generate earnings and, over time, increase the amount of XRP represented per share.

The announcement, made on October 14, coincided with Evernorth’s ringing of the Nasdaq closing bell to mark its public debut. This treasury strategy represents a significant step in Evernorth’s ambition to enhance institutional access to the XRP market.

“We’re putting our treasury to work,” Birla remarked, emphasizing the company’s desire to actively participate in the growth of the XRP ecosystem. He further elaborated that the company aims to grow XRP per share while simultaneously supporting the broader ecosystem.

The selection of Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase, and BitGo was based on their robust institutional infrastructure, licensing, financial stability, and proven track record serving public companies and asset managers.

Each partner will play a distinct role in supporting Evernorth’s operations. Ripple will provide connectivity to the XRP ecosystem and its underlying infrastructure. Kraken and Coinbase will offer exchange services for trade execution, while BitGo will handle the institutional custody of Evernorth’s digital assets.

Collectively, these four partners will enable Evernorth to manage its XRP holdings and implement its planned strategies, adhering to the stringent controls and reporting standards expected of a Nasdaq-listed entity.

Evernorth has not yet disclosed the specific allocation of its XRP treasury across various strategies or provided concrete return targets. The success of these plans will also be contingent on prevailing market conditions and the emergence of new opportunities, such as the development of credit markets on the XRP Ledger.

DriveWealth Taps Ripple for Stablecoin Integration and Global Expansion

DriveWealth, a provider of global brokerage infrastructure, has announced a strategic partnership with Ripple to integrate stablecoin settlement, cross-border payments, and digital asset custody into its existing framework. The initial phase of this collaboration will focus on settlement capabilities within Europe, with subsequent expansion planned for the United States market.

The integration will leverage Ripple’s robust stablecoin infrastructure, including its native stablecoin, RLUSD, which operates on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). This will be complemented by Ripple’s established mint and burn functionalities. The overarching goal is to enable DriveWealth’s clients to efficiently fund and manage collateral accounts using stablecoins, with the ability to convert these assets into cash in near real-time.

The partnership encompasses four key areas: stablecoin settlement, cross-border payments, digital asset custody, and equity financing.

DriveWealth is implementing Ripple Payments to streamline cross-border transfers from its international partners. Concurrently, the company is working with Ripple to establish digital asset custody services in Europe, with ambitions to extend these offerings to additional markets.

In a separate initiative, DriveWealth and Ripple Prime are exploring equity financing opportunities. This exploration will utilize Ripple Prime’s Delta One business, which specializes in providing institutional services for U.S. equities and equity derivatives.

The companies also intend to connect DriveWealth’s treasury and custody infrastructure with Ripple’s systems. This integration aims to provide clients with a more unified platform for managing dollars, stablecoins, and cryptocurrencies.

The current settlement cycle for U.S. equities is T+1, meaning trades settle one business day after execution. Cross-border money transfers can often take significantly longer. This disparity can lead to increased funding requirements and tie up capital when financial institutions most need it.

The new integration is designed to assist international clients in moving funds without being solely reliant on traditional banking transfer windows and cutoff times. DriveWealth already facilitates 24/5 trading and anticipates that the enhanced funding capabilities will better synchronize money transfers with its trading services.

“Our partnership with Ripple empowers us to extend the same funding and custody experience our clients already rely on to stablecoins and digital assets,” stated Naureen Hassan, CEO of DriveWealth.

Jack McDonald, Ripple’s Senior Vice President of Stablecoins, commented that the partnership’s scope extends beyond cross-border settlement to encompass trading, custody, and settlement infrastructure.

DriveWealth serves as a brokerage infrastructure provider to over 100 global partners, including fintech companies, digital wallets, and financial institutions seeking access to U.S. markets.

In related news, Ripple has also entered into a partnership with South Korea’s Meritz Securities to explore digital asset custody and tokenization opportunities within the Korean capital markets. This agreement marks Ripple’s inaugural collaboration with a South Korean securities firm and its fourth institutional partnership in the country for 2026, following previous agreements with Kyobo Life Insurance, Kbank, and Jeonbuk Bank.

Separately, Evernorth has selected Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase, and BitGo as partners for its XRP treasury strategy, which involves approximately $648 million in XRP holdings. These developments underscore Ripple’s growing institutional footprint across digital asset custody, tokenization, payments, and XRP-based financial services.

Ripple and DriveWealth are scheduled to discuss their partnership during a fireside chat at the Ripple Swell event, taking place on October 28 in New York City.

  • Standard Chartered Offers Direct Bitcoin, Ether Trading to Affluent UAE Clients

Standard Chartered Offers Direct Bitcoin, Ether Trading to Affluent UAE Clients

Standard Chartered has launched direct trading services for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) for its affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), effective October 14, 2026. The new offering enables clients to trade these cryptocurrencies directly through their existing bank accounts, utilizing a closed-loop system that keeps assets within the bank’s infrastructure.

Regulated by Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), the service aligns with the UAE’s objective to become a regulated hub for virtual assets. This initiative by Standard Chartered is viewed as a significant step in integrating digital assets into traditional banking frameworks.

Standard Chartered describes the service as moving cryptocurrency from the periphery of a client’s financial life into the same application used for managing other banking products. The closed-loop model ensures that both fiat currency and digital assets remain within the bank’s system, supported by institutional-grade custody and settlement processes, rather than being transferred to third-party platforms.

Clients must meet professional investor criteria to access this service. The offering includes spreads of up to 2% per trade, a factor Standard Chartered has flagged as a trade-off for the convenience and security of the integrated system. Consequently, some clients may still prefer dedicated exchanges for more active trading strategies.

This launch marks a progression in Standard Chartered’s digital asset strategy. The bank established its digital-asset custody business in September 2024, initially serving institutional clients. In July 2025, Standard Chartered became the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to offer deliverable spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether in the UK. This was followed by the rollout of institutional spot trading in BTC and ETH through its Dubai International Financial Centre entity on September 3, 2026.

The bank has flagged this latest offering for affluent clients in the UAE as a logical next step following its previous expansions into custody and institutional trading. The move aligns with the broader trend of increasing regulatory maturity in the virtual asset space, as indicated by major international banks operating under frameworks like VARA’s rules.

While the service offers direct access to digital assets within a regulated environment, potential uncertainties remain regarding the future reach of the service beyond professional investors, the possibility of expanding to other digital assets, and broader expansion plans. The current offering focuses on Bitcoin and Ether for affluent clients, with a cost structure that includes spreads of up to 2%.

    Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Standard Chartered has enabled affluent clients in the UAE to trade Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) directly through their existing bank accounts, utilizing a closed-loop system that keeps assets within the bank’s infrastructure. How far beyond professional investors the service might eventually reach.

    Broader Context

Source materials place the factual news in this context: Standard Chartered’s digital-asset custody business was established in September 2024, initially serving institutional clients.

  • Standard Chartered Launches Regulated Crypto Trading Service in UAE for Professional Investors

Standard Chartered Launches Regulated Crypto Trading Service in UAE for Professional Investors

Standard Chartered has launched a cryptocurrency trading service in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for eligible Professional Investor clients, allowing them to buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum. The service integrates trading, custody, and settlement within the bank’s existing accounts and a closed-loop ecosystem, a move Standard Chartered says aims to reduce reliance on third-party platforms and wallets.

The bank has secured licensing approval from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) for this offering. Standard Chartered describes the service as a global first for the bank and the first of its kind by an international bank in the UAE. The initial rollout is restricted to eligible Professional Investor clients within the UAE.

    Integrated Ecosystem and Regulatory Approval

According to the bank’s announcement, the closed-loop structure is designed to mitigate risks associated with third-party wallets. The bank states that the offering combines institutional-grade custody, liquidity, and client access within a single digital-asset ecosystem. Samir Subberwal, Global Head of Wealth and Personal Banking at Standard Chartered, highlighted the launch as a significant milestone, integrating digital assets into the bank’s core wealth offering amid growing client interest.

Rola Abu Manneh, the bank’s Chief Executive Officer for the UAE, Middle East and Pakistan, noted that the UAE was a strategic choice for this launch due to its progressive approach to innovation, robust regulatory environment, and increasing leadership in digital assets. Standard Chartered’s existing wealth capabilities already include cryptocurrency ETFs on its cash-equities platform and exposure through structured products and OTC derivatives.

    Client Focus and Undisclosed Details

This launch effectively shifts access to Bitcoin and Ethereum into a regulated banking relationship. The closed-loop structure centralizes trading, custody, and settlement functions within the bank’s infrastructure, eliminating the need for clients to manage assets across both a bank and external crypto providers. The VARA regulatory approval is a key element, situating the new service within an authorized UAE framework.

The restriction to Professional Investor clients signifies that Standard Chartered is enhancing its wealth management services with crypto trading capabilities, rather than introducing a broad consumer product at this stage. Standard Chartered plans to expand the offering to other markets over time, although specific destinations and timelines for this expansion have not yet been disclosed.

Several details regarding the new service remain undisclosed. These include trading fees, minimum investment amounts, and transaction limits. It is also not specified whether clients can transfer purchased assets outside of the bank’s ecosystem, and the precise mechanics of execution are not described.

    Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Standard Chartered has introduced a crypto trading service in the UAE, enabling eligible Professional Investor clients to buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum. Trading fees are not specified.

  • Ripple Partners with Meritz Securities, First Korean Securities Firm

Ripple Partners with Meritz Securities, First Korean Securities Firm

Ripple Partners with Meritz Securities to Expand Digital Asset Services in South Korea

Blockchain solutions firm Ripple has announced a strategic partnership with Meritz Securities, a prominent South Korean securities firm. This collaboration marks Ripple’s inaugural partnership with a securities firm in South Korea and its fourth institutional alliance in the country this year. The agreement aims to integrate Ripple’s digital asset custody and tokenization technologies into South Korea’s capital markets.

Meritz to Explore Ripple Custody and Tokenization

Under the terms of the partnership, Meritz Securities will conduct a thorough study of Ripple Custody and its tokenization capabilities. The objective is to assess their suitability for integration into Meritz’s existing securities business operations. Ripple Custody is designed to offer financial institutions secure storage, transfer, and settlement solutions for digital assets, along with robust management of private keys. Leveraging Ripple’s established technology is expected to accelerate Meritz’s development of these services, potentially bypassing the significant time and cost associated with building such infrastructure in-house.

Broader Digital Asset Exploration by Meritz

Beyond custody solutions, Meritz Securities is actively exploring a range of digital asset services. These include the potential development of spot cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs), security tokens, fractional investment offerings, and advanced trading platforms. The firm is also investigating the creation of South Korean won-denominated stablecoins, which could facilitate digital payments and money transfers. These initiatives suggest Meritz’s intention to utilize Ripple’s technology for a diverse array of applications, extending beyond mere cryptocurrency storage to encompass investment products and digital payment systems.

Strategic Significance for Ripple and South Korea

The partnership is considered a significant move for Ripple, providing it with a direct pathway into South Korea’s substantial $4.51 trillion capital markets through an established financial institution. Fiona Murray, Ripple’s Managing Director for Asia Pacific, highlighted the company’s comprehensive infrastructure, stating, “Ripple brings the full infrastructure stack across payments, custody and tokenization, backed by more than 85 licenses and a network spanning more than 60 markets globally.”

This latest alliance follows Ripple’s previous collaborations in South Korea with Kyobo Life Insurance for tokenized government bond settlement, Kbank for digital asset wallet infrastructure, and Jeonbuk Bank for cross-border payment solutions. The timing of this partnership is particularly noteworthy, as South Korea is in the process of refining its digital asset regulations, with a comprehensive regulatory framework slated to be implemented in February 2027.

  • Ripple Partners with Stripe’s Privy for XRP Ledger Wallet Expansion

Ripple Partners with Stripe’s Privy for XRP Ledger Wallet Expansion

Ripple Partners with Stripe-Owned Privy to Enhance XRP Ledger Wallet Access

Ripple has announced a strategic partnership with Privy, a wallet infrastructure provider owned by Stripe, aimed at expanding access to the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and facilitating seamless digital asset payments. The collaboration, confirmed on October 13, will enable developers to integrate XRPL wallets directly into their applications, simplifying the process for users to make payments using XRP, Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin, and other digital assets.

    Streamlining Digital Payments and Commerce

Under the agreement, Privy’s technology will empower developers to embed XRPL wallets within their applications, allowing users to conduct transactions without the burden of managing private keys. This integration is designed to support a range of payment scenarios, from everyday transactions to more advanced applications like AI-powered payments and agentic commerce.

Privy’s suite of tools will provide developers with the capability to create wallets, sign transactions, and facilitate payments using XRP, RLUSD, and other digital assets supported on the XRPL network. Crucially, users will retain control over their wallets, with the option to export their private keys and seed phrases should they wish to migrate their funds to alternative wallet solutions.

For fintech companies and payment providers, this partnership presents an opportunity to more easily incorporate stablecoin payments and digital asset services into their existing offerings. Developers will gain the flexibility to build with XRP, RLUSD, and a variety of other assets available on the XRPL.

Markus Infanger, SVP of RippleX at Ripple, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating, “Privy brings proven wallet infrastructure that makes it easier for fintechs and developers to bring XRPL into real products, from payments and stablecoin experiences to emerging forms of agentic commerce.”

    Enabling Advanced Commerce and Payments

Beyond conventional payment methods, the partnership is set to foster the development of agentic commerce. This emerging field allows AI agents to manage funds and execute transactions through programmable wallets, potentially enabling applications where AI systems can autonomously pay for services or complete transactions without requiring constant user approval. The integration will also support x402 payments, a system designed to facilitate transactions between digital services.

The specific functionalities available will ultimately depend on how developers implement the technology and the security controls they establish.

    XRP Ledger’s Growing Transaction Volume

The partnership builds upon the XRP Ledger’s established track record in payment processing. The network currently boasts over 8 million funded accounts and has facilitated transactions valued at over $1 trillion. The announcement also revealed that the XRPL has processed 13 million agent payments, representing approximately 25% of the network’s overall activity.

Henri Stern, co-founder and CEO of Privy, commented on the evolving landscape of digital finance, noting, “Stablecoins are changing how money moves, and XRPL has been building for payments from the start.”

  • Super League Buys First Bitcoin for $83,041

Super League Buys First Bitcoin for $83,041

Super League Enterprise Acquires First Bitcoin Ahead of Major Deal

Super League Enterprise has made its initial foray into Bitcoin, purchasing a single coin for $83,041.40. The Nasdaq-listed company (NASDAQ: SLE) executed this acquisition just days before a crucial shareholder vote on a proposed transaction that would add 2,100 Bitcoin to its holdings.

    Initial Purchase and Strategic Exploration

The Bitcoin purchase occurred on October 10, 2026, with Super League disclosing the transaction in an SEC Form 8-K filing on October 13. The company characterized the move as a preliminary step, indicating it is evaluating Bitcoin as a potential treasury asset to complement its existing cash reserves, without yet announcing a formal commitment.

CEO Matt Edelman described the acquisition as an “inaugural” purchase, linking it to the company’s strategy of integrating a Bitcoin treasury approach with its current gaming and media operations.

    Landmark Agreement with Metaplanet Inc.

Super League entered into a significant agreement with Metaplanet Inc. (TSE: 3350) on August 18, 2026. Metaplanet, recognized as Japan’s third-largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally, plans to contribute 2,100 Bitcoin and $2.5 million in cash as part of the deal. In return, Metaplanet is set to receive approximately 95.7% of Super League’s common stock.

The value of Metaplanet’s treasury contribution was initially estimated at around $132 million in August. By early October, this valuation had increased to approximately $179 million, reflecting market fluctuations.

    Shareholder Vote and Future Outlook

Shareholders are slated to vote on the proposed transaction on October 16, 2026. If approved, the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. Following the closing, Super League intends to rebrand itself as Superplanet Inc. The agreement also includes a five-year lock-up period on Metaplanet securities post-transaction.

Strategic Rationale for the Initial Purchase

The acquisition of a single Bitcoin prior to the larger influx serves a practical purpose. It allows the company to establish and test its systems for Bitcoin custody, accounting, and internal controls. These operational frameworks will be essential for managing a significantly larger Bitcoin portfolio should the Metaplanet deal be finalized. This incremental approach enables Super League to refine its processes with minimal risk.

Impact on Existing Shareholders and Deal Valuation

For current Super League shareholders, the October 16 vote represents a pivotal moment. Approval of the deal will substantially alter the company’s financial standing and ownership structure. With Metaplanet poised to hold a majority stake, existing shareholders will see their ownership diluted in a larger, Bitcoin-centric entity. The notable increase in the deal’s valuation from approximately $132 million to $179 million underscores the impact of Bitcoin’s price movements between the agreement’s signing and the upcoming vote.

    Metaplanet’s Strategic Objectives

The transaction provides Metaplanet with a strategic entry into U.S. markets via Super League’s Nasdaq listing. The combined entity aims to leverage access to both American and Japanese financial landscapes. CEO Matt Edelman has emphasized that the intention is to operate the Bitcoin treasury in parallel with existing business operations, not as a replacement.

The shareholder vote on October 16, 2026, and the targeted fourth-quarter closing remain key milestones. Until then, Super League’s Bitcoin treasury will consist of its single, initial acquisition.

  • Interactive Brokers Expands Digital Offerings with Ethereum Staking Launch

Interactive Brokers Expands Digital Offerings with Ethereum Staking Launch

Interactive Brokers has launched a cryptocurrency staking service for eligible clients, initially focusing on Ethereum. This new feature, provided by zerohash, allows clients to stake ETH directly through the broker’s Client Portal and earn rewards on their holdings.

The introduction of staking represents a significant expansion of Interactive Brokers’ digital asset services, integrating them further into its comprehensive investment platform. Clients can manage their staking activities, including submitting staking and unstaking requests, via a dedicated dashboard. Rewards earned are credited as additional staked cryptocurrency, offering the potential for compounding returns.

“Similar to how our Stock Yield Enhancement Program allows clients to earn additional income on shares they own, staking gives clients an opportunity to earn rewards on the cryptocurrency they own,” stated Interactive Brokers CEO Milan Galik. “We want clients to earn more from the assets they hold.”

This staking service follows a series of recent enhancements to Interactive Brokers’ crypto offerings. The brokerage first enabled direct cryptocurrency trading in September 2021, initially listing Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash. In January, Interactive Brokers introduced USDC account funding, and its stablecoin services now encompass USDC, Ripple’s RLUSD, and PayPal’s PYUSD for eligible clients. The platform also supports transfers of supported crypto assets to and from external wallets.

Further expanding its digital asset lineup, Interactive Brokers added nine tokens via zerohash and three via Paxos in July. This brought its zerohash trading portfolio to 20 digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and NEAR.

The infrastructure supporting this new staking service was anticipated in June when zerohash announced its development of staking solutions for brokerages, banks, and fintech platforms. At that time, Milan Galik indicated Interactive Brokers’ intention to offer staking alongside its existing investment products.

By integrating staking, Interactive Brokers enables clients to trade digital assets alongside traditional instruments such as stocks, options, futures, bonds, and funds, providing access to services previously more common on dedicated cryptocurrency platforms.

Interactive Brokers noted that product availability may vary by affiliate and country of residence. The staking service is currently available to eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients and supports Ethereum.

    Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Interactive Brokers has introduced a cryptocurrency staking service for eligible clients, initially supporting Ethereum. Product availability varies by affiliate and country of residence.

    Broader Context

Source materials place the factual news in this context: Interactive Brokers has launched cryptocurrency staking for eligible clients, starting with Ethereum , as the brokerage continues to expand its digital asset offering.

  • Standard Chartered to Offer Ripple Stablecoin Trading in Dubai

Standard Chartered to Offer Ripple Stablecoin Trading in Dubai

Standard Chartered to Offer Custody of Ripple’s Stablecoin to Institutional Clients in Dubai

Standard Chartered is set to provide institutional clients in Dubai with custody services for Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, RLUSD. The bank aims to enable these clients to trade the tokens without the need to transfer them to an exchange.

    Digital Asset Custody Infrastructure Expanded

The British bank announced Monday that it now supports institutional custody of Ripple USD (RLUSD), issued on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). This offering grants eligible clients access to Standard Chartered’s digital asset custody infrastructure. The service is being rolled out through the bank’s branch in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), which operates under the regulation of the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA).

Custody in finance refers to the secure holding of assets by a regulated institution, which assumes responsibility for their safekeeping. While the institution manages and safeguards the assets, it also gains the authority to supervise, freeze, and control funds under its custody.

RLUSD is a stablecoin, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value pegged at $1. It is backed by U.S. dollars, U.S. government bonds, and cash equivalents. Ripple launched RLUSD in December 2024 on both Ethereum and the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain closely associated with Ripple. Standard Chartered’s new service specifically covers the XRP Ledger version of the stablecoin.

Integration with LMAX Group for Collateral Use

In parallel, Standard Chartered has joined a planned integration with LMAX Group, a London-based marketplace for currencies and cryptocurrencies. This collaboration is intended to make RLUSD eligible as collateral on agreed LMAX products. Collateral, also known as margin, is funds deposited by a trader with a trading venue as a safeguard against potential losses.

Under a system Standard Chartered terms “collateral mirroring,” RLUSD will remain in the bank’s custody. LMAX will receive a mirrored record of the collateral’s value, which will then count towards the client’s trades. This arrangement means the stablecoins themselves will not be transferred to the exchange.

The collateral mirroring mechanism offers a potential advantage in the event of an exchange failure. If an exchange were to collapse, a trader’s collateral would remain secured at Standard Chartered, a bank designated by the Financial Stability Board as one of the 29 institutions considered “too big to fail” and subject to more stringent capital regulations.

Waqar Chaudry, who leads digital assets within the bank’s securities services unit, stated, “Institutional clients want to participate in digital asset markets without compromising on how their assets are safeguarded.”

Standard Chartered has been providing crypto custody services in Dubai since 2024. In July, the bank announced it was the first globally systemically important bank to allow institutions to mint and redeem Circle’s USDC directly.

RLUSD received regulatory approval from Dubai authorities in June 2025. The integration with LMAX is not yet operational. The bank indicated that the process is subject to final documentation, testing, and regulatory approvals, and did not provide a specific timeline for when clients will be able to use RLUSD as margin.

  • Moscow Exchange Launches Bitcoin Spot Trading for Retail Investors

Moscow Exchange Launches Bitcoin Spot Trading for Retail Investors

MOEX to Launch Spot Trading for Retail Investors in Bitcoin, Ether, and Tether

Russia’s largest stock exchange, the Moscow Exchange (MOEX), is preparing to offer ordinary citizens direct access to cryptocurrencies, with spot trading for a select group of digital assets slated to begin on December 1, 2026.

    Restrictions for Retail Investors

However, the move comes with stipulations. Retail investors will be subject to an annual purchase limit of 300,000 rubles, approximately $3,600. Furthermore, they must successfully complete a knowledge test before being permitted to trade.

    Limited Digital Asset Menu

The initial offering for everyday investors will include three cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ether, and Tether’s USDT stablecoin. This curated selection represents the entirety of available digital assets for individuals who do not possess qualified investor status.

Shift from Derivatives to Spot Trading

A significant development is the introduction of spot trading itself. Previously, MOEX provided cryptocurrency exposure solely through derivatives, which are contracts that mirror an asset’s price without transferring ownership of the underlying asset. Spot trading, in contrast, will allow investors to directly own the digital coins.

    Privileges for Qualified Investors

Qualified investors will operate under more lenient regulations, facing no purchase limits and gaining access to a broader spectrum of digital assets beyond the initial three.

    Legal and Testing Framework

The trading framework is established under Federal Law No. 282-FZ, which became effective on September 1, 2026. The exchange commenced testing the system with professional market participants on October 1, 2026, allowing for a two-month preparatory period before the official launch.

    Integrated Infrastructure and Partnerships

MOEX is adopting a practical approach to its infrastructure, integrating digital asset trading into its existing systems and licenses rather than establishing a separate cryptocurrency venue. This means no new licenses will be required beyond its current authorization as a trading organizer. For settlement processes, MOEX will collaborate with digital depositories to manage the transfer of assets between buyers and sellers.

    Major Banks Aligning Services

The move is not occurring in isolation. Sberbank and VTB, two of Russia’s prominent banks, are also developing digital asset services for their clientele in anticipation of the December launch.

    Strategic Asset Selection

The restriction to three assets is notable. Bitcoin and Ether are the two largest and most established cryptocurrencies, while USDT offers a stablecoin option pegged to the U.S. dollar. Investors seeking to trade less common altcoins will need to qualify as professional investors.

    Challenges in Repatriating Crypto Activity

Market analysts anticipate that approximately 80% of digital asset trading volume will continue to occur through unregulated channels, underscoring the difficulties in bringing offshore cryptocurrency activity back into regulated environments. Russian citizens currently trading on unregulated platforms enjoy unrestricted purchases, no mandatory tests, and access to a vast array of tokens.

    Enhanced Regulatory Oversight

For regulators, this framework is expected to bring greater transparency to a market that has largely operated outside of direct oversight. All trades executed on MOEX will be recorded, settled through approved depositories, and fall under the purview of the central bank.
