Draper Associates Invests in Bitcoin Neobank Xverse to Expand On-Chain Financial Services

Venture capital firm Draper Associates has invested in Xverse, a self-custodial Bitcoin wallet that now positions itself as a Bitcoin neobank, with the stated goal of expanding its on-chain financial services. The investment, which saw Xverse added to Draper Associates’ portfolio by July 2026, aims to bolster the platform’s offerings as a self-sovereign financial account for Bitcoin holders.

    From Wallet to Financial Hub

Xverse began its journey as a cryptocurrency wallet, available on iOS, Android, and as a Chrome extension. The company behind the platform, Hong Kong-based Secret Key Labs, is led by CEO Ken Liao. Xverse reports serving nearly 2 million users.

The “neobank” designation stems from a suite of features layered atop its core wallet functionality, built around three key pillars:

    • Yield: Users can earn on-chain returns on their Bitcoin through staking protocols like Stacks, including staking for Stacks’ native token, STX.
    • Borrowing: The platform allows users to take out stablecoins, such as USDC, by using their Bitcoin as collateral.
    • Payments: Xverse facilitates stablecoin payments across Bitcoin’s base layer and various Layer 2 networks, including Stacks, Starknet, and Spark.

    Self-Custody Remains Core

Underpinning these services is Xverse’s commitment to a self-custody model. Private keys remain on user devices, eliminating intermediaries and the risk of account freezes.

This funding round follows a $5 million seed round in August 2023, which was led by Jump Crypto and included Franklin Templeton among its investors. As of mid-2026, Xverse’s total funding is estimated to be between $9 million and $12 million. Draper Associates, a long-time advocate for Bitcoin since 2011, also has Coinbase in its investment history.

Bridging the Gap for Bitcoin Holders

Historically, Bitcoin holders have faced a trade-off: either keep their assets in cold storage with limited utility or entrust them to custodians to access yield and loan services. Xverse aims to offer both, enabling users to retain control of their private keys while still engaging in earning, borrowing, and payment activities.

This strategy is heavily reliant on the maturation of Bitcoin’s Layer 2 infrastructure. Networks such as Stacks, Starknet, and Spark are crucial for enabling lending and payment functionalities without deviating from the Bitcoin ecosystem. By allowing users to borrow dollar-pegged tokens against Bitcoin and spend them across different networks, Xverse bridges a significant gap in the market.

For existing Xverse users, Draper’s investment signals an influx of resources to further develop the platform’s banking-like features, with the focus on expanding on-chain services rather than a fundamental shift in strategy. While centralized exchanges offer similar services, they typically require users to relinquish control of their private keys. Xverse competes by emphasizing user control.

    Navigating the Risks

However, the self-custody model places the responsibility for key management squarely on the user. Loss of private keys means irreversible loss of funds, with no customer support to assist. Furthermore, on-chain yield and borrowing services carry inherent risks, including smart contract vulnerabilities and collateral volatility. A sharp decline in Bitcoin’s price could put significant pressure on positions collateralized by the cryptocurrency. The reliance on developing Layer 2 networks also introduces a degree of dependency on infrastructure that Xverse does not fully control.

Key indicators to watch for Xverse’s future success include continued user growth beyond its current base of nearly 2 million, broader adoption of stablecoin payments across the supported Layer 2 networks, and whether borrowing against Bitcoin evolves from a niche application to a mainstream financial practice.

Bitcoin Buys Surge to 848,000 BTC in Third Consecutive Week

Strategy Continues Bitcoin Buying Spree, Holdings Reach New Milestone

Despite prevailing macroeconomic uncertainty and political instability, Strategy has maintained its recent aggressive accumulation of Bitcoin, adding another 334 units valued at $28.7 million.

While this latest acquisition is smaller than some of the firm’s substantial purchases made in recent months, it carries significant weight on two fronts. Firstly, it marks the third consecutive week of Bitcoin accumulation for Strategy. Secondly, and perhaps more critically, the company’s total Bitcoin holdings have now reached an all-time high of 848,000 BTC.

This latest move further cements Strategy’s position as the world’s largest corporate holder of the leading cryptocurrency. The company’s Bitcoin acquisition strategy commenced over six years ago, with an investment totaling nearly $64 billion, averaging $75,441 per Bitcoin.

At current market prices of approximately $86,000 per Bitcoin, Strategy’s holdings represent an unrealized gain of nearly $9 billion. Notably, a recent statement from Michael Saylor indicated that the company reported a $21 billion gain on digital assets in the third quarter of 2026.

The company also repurchased $176 million of its own stock, STRC, as its recovery gains momentum. STRC’s share price had fallen significantly below its par value of $100, dipping to $75 during the summer. However, it has since rebounded, closing Friday’s trading session near $99.5.

  • OKX, ICE to Launch 24/7 Tokenized Stock Trading

OKX, ICE to Launch 24/7 Tokenized Stock Trading

OKXICE Plans 24/7 Trading Venue for Tokenized U.S. Stocks

OKXICE, a joint venture between cryptocurrency exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, has informed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of its intention to launch a round-the-clock trading venue for tokenized U.S. stocks. The announcement was made by co-chair Andrew Cuomo in a tweet on Monday.

The venture published a notice dated October 4, leveraging the SEC’s “Innovation Exemption.” This exemption, in effect since September 17, permits qualifying venues to trade tokenized stocks without the need for formal exchange registration. According to the notice, OKXICE will operate its venue 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The SEC does not individually approve such venues. Instead, firms that meet the exemption’s conditions notify the agency and can commence operations under its purview, provided they adhere to the stipulated requirements.

Cuomo, a former New York governor, hailed the filing as “a landmark step toward a truly global, 24/7 Wall Street.”

The notice lists several prominent companies, including Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, Microsoft, and SpaceX, alongside crypto-focused firms such as Coinbase, Circle, Strategy, Robinhood, BitGo, and Securitize. Each tokenized stock will be traded in a pair with one of three stablecoins: USDC, USDG, or Tether’s USDT.

In June, an OKX spokesperson indicated to Fortune that the venture would concentrate on tokenizing equities listed on the NYSE. However, Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and Microsoft are all listed on the Nasdaq.

The filing also reveals that chipmaker Cerebras Systems has lodged a notice of issuer objection with the venture. The exemption allows third parties to tokenize a company’s shares without its direct involvement, but the venue is obligated to notify the issuer and provide a 30-day window for objections. If an objection is raised, the tokens cannot be traded on that venue. Cerebras Systems does not appear on the notice’s list of participating companies.

Trades will be facilitated through permissioned Uniswap v4 liquidity pools on XLayer, a layer-2 blockchain. A custom smart contract will oversee and verify every transaction. Trading and liquidity provision will be restricted to wallets holding a non-transferable soulbound token, issued after identity verification, anti-money laundering, and sanctions checks conducted by OKX’s U.S. entity.

The notice cautions that tokenized prices, determined solely by the liquidity pools, may deviate from the prices of the underlying shares, particularly outside of regular exchange trading hours.

The tokens themselves are sourced from an unaffiliated third party, identified only as “the Tokenizer.” This entity holds the underlying shares on a one-for-one basis through a registered broker-dealer, though its identity is not disclosed in the notice. Holders of these tokens are entitled to the same dividends and voting rights as ordinary shareholders, according to the filing.

ICE and OKX established their 50-50 joint venture in June, three months after ICE acquired a minority stake in OKX at a valuation of $25 billion. The two entities had previously collaborated to bring crypto-native perpetual futures for oil to market for non-U.S. customers. Cuomo, who also served as New York’s attorney general, has been working with OKX since 2023.

The SEC issued the exemption on September 17, following months of deliberation after Chair Paul Atkins revised an earlier January target due to pushback from Wall Street groups, and days after the Clarity Act failed to advance in the Senate.

Atkins stated that the SEC was acting “within its statutory authority,” and officials characterized the exemption as a temporary measure intended to bridge the gap towards permanent rulemaking.

Chris Hayes, executive director of the Coalition for Tokenized Markets, commented at the time that the exemption “could put DeFi trading platforms and liquidity pools in much more direct competition with traditional exchanges.”

The notice does not specify a launch date for the trading venue.

  • Ethereum Price Prediction: Tom Lee Eyes $60,000 Amidst New Investor Influx

Ethereum Price Prediction: Tom Lee Eyes $60,000 Amidst New Investor Influx

Fundstrat Head of Research and Bitmain Chairman Tom Lee believes Ethereum could surpass its all-time high this year and potentially reach $60,000 in the coming years.

Ethereum’s Price Trajectory and Market Outlook

Lee shared these insights in an interview with Coinage, where he discussed Ethereum’s recent price movements, institutional interest, the growing trend of tokenization, and the broader cryptocurrency market.

Ethereum experienced a significant surge, climbing approximately 80% from its June low of around $1,500 to approximately $2,700 by late September. This occurred even as the Federal Reserve implemented an interest rate hike in September.

Lee anticipates that Ethereum’s price will break its previous record and exceed $5,000 before the year concludes. When questioned about the possibility of a new all-time high this year, Lee responded with a definitive “absolutely.” He further projected that Ethereum could reach approximately $60,000 within a few years, a forecast partly informed by the cryptocurrency’s historical price cycles.

Ethereum’s trajectory from below $100 at the end of 2018 to nearly $4,900 in 2021 serves as a precedent. Lee suggested that a similar substantial upward movement, following an extended period of consolidation, could propel ETH to the $60,000 mark. “Could Ethereum 10x above 10 to 12x above its prior highs of $5,000? I think that’s very possible,” Lee stated. He reiterated his near-term expectation for Ethereum to reach around $3,000 and then move significantly beyond $5,000 by year-end.

Federal Reserve Policy and Market Reaction

The Federal Reserve increased its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on September 16, setting the target range at 3.75%-4%. This decision was unanimous. Lee highlighted the market’s reaction as a key indicator, noting that Ethereum and other crypto assets continued to appreciate despite the rate hike.

Ethereum’s recovery from a June low of approximately $1,500 to roughly $2,700 by late September suggests to Lee that the crypto market may be entering a new bull cycle. He also posited that the Fed could eventually shift back towards a neutral monetary policy if inflation continues to recede.

Core consumer prices rose 2.4% year-over-year in August, a slight decrease from 2.5% in July. Lee attributed some of the persistent inflation to factors such as asset management fees and increased costs for flash memory used in technology products. Based on his team’s analysis, Lee estimates that underlying inflation could be closer to 2%.

    Institutional Demand and Tokenization

Ethereum has also benefited from increased demand driven by U.S. spot Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs). On September 22, U.S. spot Ether ETFs recorded inflows of $162.2 million, marking the third consecutive day of positive flows. BlackRock’s Ethereum fund accounted for $88.1 million of these inflows, while Fidelity’s fund added $33.6 million.

Lee believes the current cycle could attract a more diverse investor base compared to previous crypto cycles. He pointed to tokenization, evolving crypto regulations, and the growing adoption of blockchain technology by financial institutions as factors that could draw more investors into the market.

In contrast to prior crypto cycles, which Lee noted were largely propelled by specific niches like initial coin offerings (ICOs), NFTs, meme coins, and stablecoins, he sees the current cycle as having a broader spectrum of potential applications. Financial institutions, he explained, are increasingly exploring blockchain technology for asset tokenization and the development of novel financial products. Companies are likely to embrace blockchain when it offers substantial improvements in operational costs, revenue generation, or customer experience.

Tokenized stocks were cited by Lee as a prime example of this trend. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued an innovation exemption on September 17, permitting certain tokenized versions of U.S.-listed stocks to trade on blockchain networks under specific conditions. This development followed the failure of the Clarity Act to advance in the Senate after a 49-50 vote.

Evolving Trading Models and Blockchain Adoption

Lee also highlighted the trend of traditional financial exchanges planning for extended trading hours. Nasdaq has announced intentions for nearly 23-hour trading days, five days a week, while the New York Stock Exchange has received approval for a 22-hour trading day. Lee suggested these moves could bring traditional markets closer to the continuous, always-on trading model characteristic of crypto markets.

Furthermore, Lee underscored Robinhood’s strategic decision to build its Robinhood Chain on Ethereum. According to information discussed during the interview, Robinhood Chain facilitated $2.1 billion in tokenized assets within its initial two months, with $1.5 billion deposited into applications operating on the network. Lee indicated that Robinhood’s choice of Ethereum was driven by its security and liquidity, rather than a primary focus on transaction fees.

“I think that Robinhood decided to build on Ethereum… because it’s the most secure chain and the most liquid,” Lee stated. He argued that for ETH to appreciate in value, Ethereum does not necessarily need to capture all the fees generated by applications built upon it. Instead, he envisions Ethereum increasingly functioning as a store of value for investors and corporations, while the network underpins a wide array of additional financial applications.

S&P Global Unveils Risk Framework for Digital Asset Lending Market

S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new risk assessment framework designed for the burgeoning digital asset lending market, a sector that has seen its deposit base surge to $10 billion. The framework, named Vault Risk Assessment (VRA), aims to provide investors with a clearer understanding of potential risks associated with these on-chain lending products.

New Framework Addresses Rapid Market Growth

The digital asset lending market has experienced significant expansion, with deposits in on-chain lending products climbing from $1.5 billion in September 2024 to a record $10 billion, marking a nearly sevenfold increase in just two years. This rapid growth has underscored the need for standardized risk evaluation tools.

The VRA, launched on October 5, 2026, assigns a score to each digital asset lending vault based on its perceived risk level. The highest rating, AAA(v), signifies the lowest relative risk of investor impairment, while lower scores indicate a greater potential for loss.

Evaluating Risk in Digital Asset Vaults

S&P Global explained that digital asset vaults can function similarly to managed fixed-income funds. Their operational strategies can be executed automatically via smart contracts or overseen by human managers.

Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings, emphasized the growing importance of independent risk assessments as digital assets become more integrated into traditional finance. “As digital assets continue to institutionalize, the demand for independent risk assessments that bridge traditional finance and decentralized innovation is paramount,” he stated.

The VRA’s scoring methodology considers six critical areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. These factors are aggregated to determine a letter-based risk score.

    Addressing Information Gaps in DeFi

James Wiemken, executive managing director and head of Global Ratings Service, highlighted that the VRA addresses a significant gap in the complex decentralized finance (DeFi) market, particularly concerning the varied ways projects disclose information.

The framework’s introduction coincides with the substantial market expansion, with deposits in on-chain lending vaults, including those utilizing protocols like Morpho and Euler, growing from $1.5 billion to $10 billion over the past two years. These vaults enable users to consolidate capital for automated lending strategies. S&P Global indicated that it plans to publish individual Vault Risk Assessments in subsequent announcements.

  • Bitcoin Faces Massive Short Liquidation Near $90K

Bitcoin Faces Massive Short Liquidation Near $90K

Bitcoin Faces Potential Squeeze as Key Short Liquidation Zone Looms

New York, NY – October 4, 2026 – Bitcoin’s most significant concentration of vulnerable short positions is now situated directly overhead, presenting a potential catalyst for sharp market movements. On-chain analytics firm Glassnode flagged on October 4 that the largest cluster of short liquidations is building around the $90,000 price level.

With Bitcoin trading between $85,000 and $86,000 at the time of the report, this cluster is not a distant prospect but rather a few percentage points away. This proximity is enough to create unease among traders who have bet against the cryptocurrency’s price.

Glassnode’s data suggests that if Bitcoin’s price reaches this zone, a significant number of leveraged short positions could be forcibly closed. This type of automated market unwinding can rapidly transform a quiet market into a volatile one.

Traders who short Bitcoin using borrowed funds are essentially wagering on a price decline. If the price rises instead and crosses a predetermined threshold, exchanges automatically liquidate these positions to safeguard the borrowed capital. The act of closing a short position requires buying the asset back. When a substantial volume of these forced buy orders occurs simultaneously, it can drive the price higher, potentially triggering the liquidation of the next tier of short positions.

Glassnode’s analysis indicates that the densest concentration of these “trip wires” is located around the $90,000 mark. Estimates of cumulative short liquidations approaching this level across various trading platforms are in the hundreds of millions of dollars, although figures may vary between sources.

The firm also identified smaller liquidation clusters that formed over the preceding two months, near $83,000 and $75,000. According to Glassnode, a move towards either of these levels could accelerate the market’s next significant directional shift.

Earlier in the year, a substantial band of short positions had accumulated between $82,000 and $86,000. This concentration was largely depleted during the rallies in August and September, which followed record short liquidations. A notable event was a single-day “flush” on August 19, a major short liquidation event that amplified market volatility and contributed to upward price momentum.

With the $82,000 to $86,000 band now largely cleared, the next significant area of overhead exposure has shifted upwards towards $90,000.

Glassnode’s analysis is based on liquidation heatmaps, which are derived from estimated leveraged exposure. These maps highlight potential areas where forced closures could accumulate, rather than predicting future price movements.

The heatmaps reflect estimated exposure on major centralized exchanges and do not include certain perpetual futures platforms. Consequently, the actual size of the positioning around $90,000 could differ from what any single chart depicts.

Should Bitcoin ascend into the $90,000 zone and trigger a large wave of short closures, the resulting forced buying could provide additional momentum. Conversely, if Bitcoin stalls below $90,000, attention would likely shift to the smaller clusters near $83,000 and $75,000. Glassnode’s observation that a move towards these levels could hasten the next market swing suggests that a downward trajectory also carries its own volatility risks.

Liquidation clusters are dynamic. They expand as new leveraged positions are opened and contract as traders close positions or are liquidated. If the $90,000 cluster continues to grow while Bitcoin hovers in the mid-$80,000s, the potential for a squeeze intensifies. If the cluster diminishes, the setup loses some of its impact.

  • Crypto Shorts Liquidated: $113 Million Squeezed in 24 Hours

Crypto Shorts Liquidated: $113 Million Squeezed in 24 Hours

Crypto Traders Face Steep Losses as Short Positions Are Liquidated

Betting against the cryptocurrency market proved costly this past weekend, with traders seeing $113 million in short positions forcibly closed within a 24-hour period ending October 5, 2026. This figure represents the vast majority of approximately $138 million in total liquidations recorded, according to data compiled by Coinglass. Long positions, which are bets on rising prices, accounted for a mere $25.16 million of these forced closures, indicating that short sellers were liquidated at more than four times the rate of their long counterparts.

A liquidation occurs when a trader using leverage finds that their collateral is insufficient to cover mounting losses. In such instances, the exchange automatically closes the position.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Lead the Liquidation Wave

Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency asset, bore the brunt of the market’s downturn for short sellers. Short positions on Bitcoin constituted $57.07 million of the total liquidations, nearly half of all short positions closed during the specified timeframe. Ethereum followed, with $24.04 million in short positions being erased. The most significant single liquidation involved a $5.63 million ETHUSDT short position on the Binance exchange. In total, 42,225 traders across various platforms tracked by Coinglass experienced liquidations.

Binance has frequently been a leader in liquidation volumes, and the occurrence of the largest single liquidation on the platform aligns with this trend.

    A Familiar Pattern Emerges

The $113 million figure for short liquidations may sound familiar, as a similar wave of short liquidations totaling $113 million occurred in July 2026. That earlier event was linked to a 4.5% surge in Ethereum’s price towards $1,980, a move that coincided with increased inflows into Ethereum Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs).

When short positions are liquidated, exchanges are compelled to buy back the underlying asset to close those positions. This buying activity can, in turn, drive prices higher, potentially triggering further liquidations and creating a cascading effect of buying pressure.

    Market Positioning and Future Outlook

The stark imbalance between short and long liquidations suggests a significant number of traders had anticipated a decline in prices. The market’s rapid upward movement caught these bearish positions off guard, forcing their closure. Both the July and the recent episodes, with their identical $113 million in short liquidations, were triggered by unexpected price increases that caught short sellers unprepared.

When liquidations become concentrated on major trading venues like Binance, the platform’s risk management systems and liquidation mechanisms play a crucial role in determining the intensity of market movements. Heavy short liquidations typically indicate that bearish sentiment had become overly stretched, while substantial long liquidations would suggest the opposite.

Moving forward, market observers will be watching to see if funding rates and open interest begin to rebuild on the short side, potentially setting the stage for another short squeeze. Alternatively, this past weekend’s market shakeout may have reset positioning towards a more balanced state.

  • OKX Seeks SEC Approval for Tokenized Stock Trading in US

OKX Seeks SEC Approval for Tokenized Stock Trading in US

OKX Seeks US Entry with Tokenized Stock Platform

New York, NY – Cryptocurrency exchange OKX has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch a tokenized-stock trading platform in the United States, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The filing had not yet appeared in public SEC records as of early October, but the timing aligns with recent regulatory developments. Washington has recently established a formal framework for this type of trading.

OKX is no stranger to tokenized equities. In July 2026, the company introduced its “Unified Tokenized Stocks” product line, also known as xStocks-powered products. Initially, this offering featured over 40 U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). By September 2026, the selection had expanded to more than 70, available through a dedicated Money app.

These tokens allow users to trade around the clock, 24/7, with prices pegged against the USDT stablecoin. Settlements are processed on the Solana blockchain and on X Layer, OKX’s proprietary network. The tokens are backed one-to-one by underlying shares held by third-party issuers, with OKX acting as a distributor rather than the issuer.

Currently, these products are subject to Regulation S, an SEC rule governing securities offered outside the U.S. Consequently, they are not accessible to U.S. persons or users in the European Union. Despite being backed by actual shares, these tokens are classified as synthetic. Token holders gain price exposure but do not receive shareholder rights such as dividends or voting privileges.

Regulatory Shift Paves Way for New Opportunities

The regulatory landscape for tokenized securities shifted significantly on September 17, 2026, when the SEC introduced a five-year “Innovation Exemption.” This exemption permits qualified Tokenized Securities Venues (TSVs) to trade tokenized National Market System (NMS) stocks on-chain. NMS stocks generally refer to shares listed on major U.S. exchanges. Trading under this exemption can occur through approved automated market makers and liquidity pools.

The exemption is set to expire on September 17, 2031, and carries a crucial condition: tokens must preserve actual shareholder rights, including dividends and voting. This stipulation presents a challenge for OKX’s existing Unified Tokenized Stocks, which are synthetic and do not currently meet this requirement. Simply enabling access for U.S. users would not qualify these products under the new exemption.

OKX Pursues U.S. Market Through Joint Venture

OKX is also pursuing entry into the U.S. market through a separate initiative. In June 2026, the company announced a joint venture with Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). This venture, branded OKXICE, aims to offer tokenized NYSE equities once it obtains the necessary U.S. broker-dealer and futures commission merchant (FCM) statuses.

These approvals are currently pending with the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). A broker-dealer license authorizes a firm to handle securities trades for clients, while FCM status pertains to futures and derivatives business regulated by the CFTC.

Future Outlook for OKX in the U.S.

For OKX, establishing a U.S. tokenized-stock platform would unlock access to the world’s largest equity market, a market currently excluded from its flagship product’s reach. The limitations imposed by Regulation S have capped the scope of its offerings, regardless of the number of securities added.

The Innovation Exemption incentivizes tokens that incorporate full shareholder rights. Any U.S. platform launched by OKX would likely need to differ from its current synthetic offshore tokens, necessitating the distribution of real dividends and the attachment of actual voting rights to each token.

Key developments to monitor include the public release of OKX’s filing and the specific structure it outlines. Additionally, it will be important to observe whether OKX’s proposed U.S. product is designed to qualify as a TSV under the Innovation Exemption, and how the SEC and CFTC rule on OKXICE’s broker-dealer and FCM applications.

  • Pandl to Argue Zcash’s Macro Case in Singapore

Pandl to Argue Zcash’s Macro Case in Singapore

Grayscale’s Head of Research, Zach Pandl, is set to present a compelling case for Zcash to institutional investors in Singapore, a proposition that would have been met with skepticism just a few years ago.

    Institutional Pitch for Zcash

Pandl is scheduled to speak at the Digital Asset Yield Summit (DAYS) on October 6, 2026, at 10:20 AM SGT. This appearance comes amid what appears to be a concerted effort by Grayscale to promote the privacy-focused cryptocurrency. The DAYS event is not a casual retail gathering; it is designed for a curated audience of approximately 300 institutional allocators and asset managers primarily interested in on-chain yield. Pandl’s presentation will focus on his macroeconomic thesis for Zcash, a targeted analysis of a single asset rather than a broad market overview, delivered by the research chief of a prominent digital asset management firm.

    Grayscale’s Zcash Initiatives

The push for Zcash by Grayscale includes significant strategic moves. Around September 25-26, 2026, the firm filed for a Zcash-linked income ETF, a proposed fund designed to provide bi-weekly cash distributions. This follows the launch of ZCSH, a spot ETF that began trading on NYSE Arca in August 2026, offering direct exposure to Zcash. As of September 25, 2026, ZCSH managed approximately $996 million in assets.

In late September 2026, Grayscale identified Zcash as a top growth prospect within its “Currencies” category, alongside Bitcoin, Litecoin, and XRP. Analysts have posited that ZEC could potentially capture up to 5% of Bitcoin’s market share, a scenario that could drive significant price appreciation.

    Zcash’s Growth and Privacy Features

Zcash’s market capitalization has seen a dramatic surge, climbing from roughly $4 billion in March 2026 to approximately $24.27 billion by late September 2026. During this period, ZEC’s trading price rose to the $1,400-$1,500 range.

At its core, Zcash is a privacy-preserving digital asset distinguished by its ability to conduct shielded transactions. This feature, powered by zk-SNARKs technology, obscures transaction details from public view. The 2026 market rally for Zcash has been accompanied by increased adoption of shielded transactions and a growing public awareness of privacy concerns, particularly in light of advancements in artificial intelligence and surveillance technologies. Pandl has highlighted Zcash’s “second-mover advantages” with its shielded transaction technology, positioning it favorably at a time when AI is intensifying scrutiny of on-chain activities.

    Broader Appeal and Future Outlook

Grayscale’s multifaceted approach—including research advocacy, the filing for a new income product, managing an existing Zcash fund nearing $1 billion, and direct engagement with institutional allocators—underscores its commitment to the asset. The proposed ETF, with its bi-weekly cash distribution feature, aims to attract allocators who prioritize cash flow alongside potential price appreciation. While regulatory approval for the ETF is not guaranteed and the timeline remains uncertain, Grayscale has been providing Zcash exposure through investment products for nearly nine years.

The firm categorizes Zcash alongside Bitcoin, Litecoin, and XRP in its “Currencies” segment, arguing that even modest gains in market share from Bitcoin could yield substantial upside for ZEC, albeit with higher volatility and lower liquidity compared to the larger digital currencies. The upcoming presentation by Pandl to approximately 300 yield-focused allocators in Singapore on October 6, 2026, represents a key milestone in Grayscale’s strategy to bolster institutional interest in Zcash.

  • Base Network Growth Metrics Analyzed Amid Data Discrepancies and USDC Concentration

Base Network Growth Metrics Analyzed Amid Data Discrepancies and USDC Concentration

The Ethereum Layer 2 network Base, developed by Coinbase, has experienced significant net inflows and a surge in decentralized finance (DeFi) activity since the beginning of 2026. According to research data, the network has attracted approximately $4.7 billion in net inflows since January 1, 2026. This growth has coincided with a substantial increase in DeFi activity, pushing the Total Value Locked (TVL) to an all-time high.

As of September 22, 2026, Base’s TVL reached approximately $6.2 billion. By early October 2026, this figure had grown to around $6.4 billion. The bridged value on the network also saw considerable activity, reaching $8.28 billion in early October 2026. The stablecoin market capitalization on Base is approximately $5.2 billion, with USD Coin (USDC) making up a dominant 84% of this total.

Further analysis of bridge activity from a separate dataset indicates cumulative inflows of about $19.5 billion against outflows of approximately $18.4 billion, resulting in a net of about $1.1 billion. This figure differs from the year-to-date net inflow of $4.7 billion, highlighting a discrepancy in how these metrics are tracked or defined. The exact reasons for this discrepancy remain uncertain, suggesting that different trackers may be measuring distinct elements, such as specific bridges, varying time windows, or how native asset issuance is accounted for.

Additionally, research data indicates that Base’s TVL has been growing faster than stablecoin inflows. This suggests that a portion of the TVL increase may be attributed to the appreciation in value of assets already present on the network, rather than solely from new deposits. The extent to which TVL growth is driven by new deposits versus asset appreciation is uncertain.

Coinbase’s tokenized stocks also saw notable activity, with a daily trading volume of $71 million as of October 2026.

Base operates as an Ethereum Layer 2 solution, processing transactions off the main Ethereum chain and batching them for posting back to Ethereum. This architecture aims to enhance security while reducing costs and increasing transaction speed, aligning with Coinbase’s strategy to bring on-chain activity closer to its user base.

The significant concentration of stablecoin supply in USDC presents a potential risk. Given that USDC comprises roughly 84% of the stablecoin market cap on Base, any disruption to USDC could have a more pronounced impact on the network’s liquidity compared to networks with a more diversified stablecoin mix. This concentration is unsurprising, considering Coinbase’s co-founding of the Centre consortium with Circle, the issuer of USDC.

In summary, Base is demonstrating robust growth in terms of inflows and DeFi activity. However, the interpretation of these metrics requires careful consideration due to discrepancies in net inflow data and the notable concentration of stablecoin assets in USDC, which warrants ongoing observation.

    Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Base has attracted $4. The exact reasons for the discrepancy between the $4.7 billion year-to-date net inflow figure and the $1.1 billion net from the separate bridge activity dataset.

    Broader Context

Source materials place the factual news in this context: Base is an Ethereum Layer 2, meaning it processes transactions off Ethereum’s main chain and then posts the results back to Ethereum.
